Play Ben

#1
He has been anything but stellar, but he needs to play significant and meaningful minutes. Run some plays for him, demand effort on defense and define his role.

Maybe I'm crazy but hasn't he been given significant minutes the last 2.5 years? Just a quick look shows me that he has only not played in 4 games in 2.5 years and all of those being injury I believe.

thats whats been missing 'define role'. cousins and others were asking what their roles were at the beginning of the season. these optional practices, film sessions, game plans aren't helping the team. vivek failed. again. hard.

who will he pick for gm & hc next season? does he have a dart board he tosses to select who he's going with or some software that was developed that helps him pick based on analytics?

I agree on the play Ben part...let the kid get his 30 minutes a game without looking over his shoulder that he won't return anymore. Nothing to lose here really, if anything...it might boost his trade value if the Kings are looking in another direction.

As I've mentioned before, he's basically been given more minutes the last 2.5 years than any other player so unproductive to start his career in NBA history.

If the team comes out and quits here then who knows, and frankly who cares. If that happens Ben is gone, as are many people in a few months. If we manage to keep contact and make a run down our final 20 games (when the schedule gets soft, not that that ever matters to us), then there is no "play Ben". There is, however, as always, Ben plays himself back into minutes by actually helping the team. Oddly that is supposed to be the relationship -- Ben isn't supposed to be some suckling orphan drawing constant concern and attention, he's supposed to be a professional helping the organization paying him millions of dollars to win some games. He's welcome to do that at any point, and if he does, then yes he should play.

Hey brick, why did you choose to ignore the stats I actually provided for you on Ben getting one of the least touches in the NBA for a SG? You've made this argument in the other thread, and when I actually provided stats on his opportunities this year, you didn't say a single thing...then proceed to bring up the same argument. I'm just curious

Almost 24 minutes tonight for Ben and, except for that totally meaningless bucket at the end and his 40 ft. shot during dead time, he did close to nothing. 2 points, 2 boards, 1 asst and 4 fouls? It's getting awfully hard to keep defending him.

Of course, tonight he wasn't the worst player on the court because James Anderson.

Yea his offense was invisible tonight.

Everyone pleads for more defense on this team...when Ben shuts down his man, it means he did close to nothing? Whaaaaat? This confuses me.

Which man would that be?

Mudiay missed open shots several times, and almost got his career average anyway.
Effort was better, average (which is improvement)... the other side of the game was putrid.

If I'm not mistaken you were criticizing getting a defensive guy during the deadline, saying they can't shoot etc, but now defending a guy who only got a shot at the hash mark with an expired clock and one with like 1 second left in the game.

Ben was particularly bad tonight on offense. Just never looked very involved or quite sure of where he was supposed to be on the court. I thought he still brought his usual brand of semi-effective hustle on defense though. He could be a difference maker on that end if he bulks up a little bit. He moves his feet well guarding the ball but quickness alone without strength or anticipation only gets you so far. I focused on him when he was on the court because I made such a big deal about keeping him over the All-Star break, but unfortunately he did a lot to appease the critics in this game. Hopefully he has a nice bounce-back game to follow this up because the last thing we need is even more Marco and James Anderson for the next 28 games.

Are you talking about Tony Snell? The guy who is the worse version of Ben?

Ben wasn't the one leaving him wide open though..

If Mudiay scoring 8pts means almost reaching his career high...he's got a lot of work to do.

Yea, Ben's offense was bad tonight. However, I thought his defense was really good. He got caught on a switch early in the half, and actually denied his man really well.

I think the team played better perimeter D as a unit, but Ben really set the tone with how tight he played Mudiay early on. Mudiay needs a lot of work...to say the least. He had trouble dribbling around Ben. I feel like his handles are extremely limited. He's certainly good enough to improve on them though.

No Shumpert. I believe I asked you how many shots you wanted from the SG, and estimated maybe 6 and he at least hard to be guarded on the floor.

It wasn't Shump's injury history, or large contract that was nitpicked, but his offensive abilities.

Ben had a really good defensive game. He was picking up full court. Karl singled out Ben and Collison for their well played defense. We screamed for defense on the wing and got it. Enough said.
I refuse to listen to Karl's post game comments any more so I didn't hear that. And, to be honest, I wasn't specifically watching his defense - although now that you mention it I do recall a couple of times he really dug in and stayed with his man.

I still think Anderson totally sucked, however. :p

The good news, or what I enjoyed seeing from our guards today was the early ball pressure.

If Rondo/Collison/Anderson/Ben can stay in front of their men, especially with WCS on the floor I'd like to see more early pressure. It seemed to hurt the Nuggets quite a bit.

I'm not sure we could do it with Marco on the floor unless he was at SF though.

I'm pretty sure I talked about his injury history too. I even went as far back as pointing out how many games he's missed each season in a thread. I could find it for you if you'd like.

And I'm pretty sure I replied about Shump's offense after people claimed that he was an average shooter...while ignoring that he's a straight up terrible offensive player all around...including shooting. 32.6% this year. Only had 2 years at least 35%... his 2nd year while only playing 45 games, and his 4th season while only playing 28 games... someone tried to make the argument by bringing in those small sample sized numbers.

Bens offense last night was not very good...worked hard on defense.....I just think he's going to be a limited upside guy despite that nice shooting stroke and athleticism.

If you have a great defender and a great offensive creating SG, you get Kobe Bryant. If you get a guy who is a good defender, shoots for a good percentage and on occasion gives you a good offensive outburst, then you have a legit guard.

We keep wanting our whole starting 5 to be at an all star level. Not realistic expectations.

I kept waiting for Mudiay to do something to impress me and never saw it. WCS, on the other hand, played terrific. I'm pleased with Vlade's pick.
