I don't think he's got any real shot this year, but the contract situation really isn't bad anymore. We've got three bad contracts that we are probably just going to have to live with in Beno, Cisco and Noc. But that's it. Everybody else is either on their rookie deals, free agents to be, or considerably underpaid. And for the first time in a decade we'll actually have major caproom if we want to try to make a splash.

Right, but the thing that scares me is, what will happen when our players are off their rookie deal? If Garcia/Beno got the deals they got, what is Greene going to get? Thompson? Hawes? And while it's extremely early to think about, do you think Evans will get a Martin type deal? Or more? Obviously a lot could change with the new CBA, but I just think GP overpays for overrated role players way too often.

^^^This. Petrie definitely won the draft. BUT- he traded away our best asset and didn't get what we really needed, which was (1) shipping out Noc and Beno's bad contracts and (2) draft picks. The idea that the cap savings from shipping Martin are that great is odd because we could still get expirings for Martin at any time.

--not that this was a bad trade, but not exec-of-the-year level.


I can see him winning, if just because no one else has really done anything big. Morey didn't have any picks. Cleveland took what was widely perceived to be the second best option (below Amare). Buford would have been no. 1 if the RJ experiment worked out (getting blair counts for him). Dallas might have a good shot at it too.


I think this is the type of year that will get GP on the radar again. Once the Kings get back into the playoff hunt, I think he'll get another trophy his way, but not until then.

I agree with you about the draft picks but not the rest. we got a totally comparable player arguably better player than kmart in Landry. we didn't get rid of nocioni or beno but we still have a ton if cap space after these moves so it's not even a big deal right now.
Nocionis deal will probably be a lot more feasible trade wise next year when it's only a year and a half basically.
Benos contract really isn't bad at all considering he's our only viable
backup at pg, a guy who has played pretty well this year. he's a valuable guy especialy now with Sergio and kmart gone. for now I think he will be a king, if he continues to play well his trade value goes up
and his contract really isn't that bad like nocionis.

plus it's pretty clear to most of us that the kings are not going to be major players in this years market. we may probably go for a lower or middle tier
guy but not a max guy. If Petrie drafts well again in 2010 when we will have likely a top 5 pick who has the potential to be a star with evans. turner or cousins or wall would be great on this team. by the time 2011 rolls around tyreke is in full bloom we have a good group of young players we'd have the cap space and hopefully team recognition as a big up and comer and Sacramento is well know around the league and fan friendly and a lot of people have fond memories of the old kings when they were in their prime. I think that's the year hopefully like OKC and be on the verge of being a serious threat but with also maybe a big free agent signing.

I feel like Petrie and westphal and the kings most likely being stressed by the maloofs too is that they want to build a tough defensive team.
