The Sacramento Kings today announced that former Kings' assistant coach Pete Carril will return to the organization as a Basketball Development Consultant according to Kings' President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.

"We're really excited to have Pete come back and join us as a consultant to assist Kenny (Natt) in all areas of individual player and team development," said Petrie. "He's really excited about rejoining the club and adding some of his experience and understanding of the game. I look forward to seeing him back here."

One of the most respected men in basketball, Carril spent 10 seasons with the Kings as an assistant coach, specializing in individual player development and offensive schemes.

"Coach Carril brings a lot of winning experience and knowledge about basketball in general," explained Kings' Head Coach Kenny Natt. "As a young head coach, I will be able to utilize his experience and knowledge about getting the best out of our players. I'm looking forward to his input. It's exactly what I need at this point."

In a crowning achievement to his legendary collegiate coaching career, Carril was rewarded with an induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on September 29, 1997. After coaching 30 years in the NCAA ranks, Carril joined the Kings prior to the 1996-97 campaign. His addition to the Kings' coaching staff reunited him with Petrie, whom he coached at Princeton from 1968-70.

The winningest coach in Ivy League history (525-273, .658 winning percentage), Carril's career at Princeton included 13 conference titles, 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, and just one losing season. Prior to his retirement following the 1996 NCAA Tournament, he was the only active NCAA Division I head coach to reach the 500-victory plateau without athletic scholarships.

In his final season as head coach at Princeton, he led the Tigers to the Ivy League Championship with a 22-7 record. In one of the most thrilling moments of the 1996 NCAA Tournament, Carril's Tigers upset defending champion UCLA in the first round, 43-41, on a signature Carril-designed backdoor layup with only 3.8 seconds remaining in the game.

Carril played collegiately at Lafayette College under Head Coach Butch Van Breda Kolff. Following his graduation from Lafayette in 1952, Carril began his coaching career at the high school level where he stayed for 12 years. He went on to become head coach at Lehigh University for one season before beginning his stay at Princeton in 1967.

This is really Kenny's only chance to stay around IMO, is if he gets Carril to install that Princeton O and help him utilize the players better.

As far as which players would benefit from that IMO: Martin, Miller, Thompson, Hawes, Udrih, Garcia, Greene

Players who aren't going to like this IMO: Salmons, Mikki

If he actually is allowed to install the princeton offense I think that would give this team the sort of direction its lacking right now. Beno in particular, even though he's been way too sensitive IMO, has really been hurt without an offense really to run. Hawes and Thompson can both play the high post and Martin loved the Princeton offense and liked Carril a lot. I don't think Salmons likes this at all, because any coach who doesn't have him pounding the ball is a coach that Salmons doesn't like.

Agree. This will also be great for our young players. If I remember right, the Kings young players developed very well with Carril here. With all the young players we have and two draft picks, this could be very key for their development.

WOW!!!! THANK GOD!

David thorpe and Coachie have made Kmart the player he is!

he is going to to wonders for Cisco and HOLIDAY!!!! (or my boy Pattie Mills.)

p.s. Sucks for douby! he could have helped him.

WISDOM FROM 'COACHIE' OVER THE MANY YEARS:

"The smart take from the strong." -- Pete Carill

"Coaching is preparation." -- Pete Carill

"The strength of my Princeton teams has always been attitude, intelligence and discipline." -- Pete Carill

"A guy who gives you less than what he has to give is, one, telling you what he thinks of you, and two, telling you what he thinks of himself." -- Pete Carill

"I don't recruit players who are nasty to their parents. I look for players who realize the world doesn't revolve around them." -- Pete Carill

"Once practice starts, we work hard, and that's the best conditioning there is. Everything counts. Every little thing counts. Run hard, play hard, go after the ball hard, guard hard. If you play soft (what I call signing a 'non-aggression pact' with your teammates), you won't ever get into shape." -- Pete Carill

"Work hard to make things easier." -- Pete Carill

"A player's ability to rebound is inversely proportional to the distance between where he was born and the nearest railroad tracks. The greater distance you live from the poor side of the railroad tracks, the less likely that you will be a good rebounder." -- Pete Carill

THE RETURN OF COACHIE!!!

Nice...So many people said it wouldnt happen (with good reason to think that too)..

Step in the right direction for the franchise

Great move - glad to see this.

Wonder if it is Kenny Natt asking for this or if it is being "imposed" from Petrie, etc., since Natt is supposedly secure for this season?

Maybe a combo. Even if this was Petrie's "strong suggestion," I can't imagine Natt being upset. Carril is no threat to take his job next season (assuming Natt is eligible to remain coach), is a basketball genius, , is good at helping young players develop and is soft spoken/not a domineering personality.

Not to mention that if Natt and Carril get along, this would be an extra voice with some influence among the decision makers who could advocate for him

I think this is win-win-win-win for everyone involved.

Sorry Johnny boy.
Enjoy your new Development Consultant.

Pete Carill Could be going with Donte to the D-League

If Donte' Greene and Pete Carril have anything in common, it's that they're restless.

Greene, the 20-year-old rookie small forward out of Syracuse acquired by the Kings in the summer trade with Houston for Ron Artest, hasn't seen the floor in seven of the last eight games and is itching to feel like a basketball player again. Carril, the 78-year-old Princeton coaching legend whose offensive mind was such an asset to the Kings when he was assistant in Sacramento for 10 years, yearns to make an impact on the floor again as well.

It appears both men will be getting their wishes soon, as the Kings announced today that Carril will be pulled out of retirement to serve as a consultant and Greene - according to sources close to the team - will depart for the Kings' NBA Developmental League team in Reno on Saturday.

Wonder what he's actually going to be doing?

Probably similar to what he did before in Sac. Work individually with Kings players in practice and especially after each session. Consult on game strategy, upcoming draft selections, etc.

Heh -- if you ever wanted to have a disturbing picture in your mind of Kenny Natt bending over and grabbing his ankles, just read that ridiculous quote of his before you go to bed.

Not that he would necessarily be inclined to fight it -- this is his best/only chance of being retained after this year. Kiss a little ***, mumble 10 I'm Not Worthies every morning (and he ain't, so shouldn't be hard), and promise Santa Claus to be a good little boy. And the timing of the move is no surprise -- just wasn't possible with a strong-ego'd coach like Reggie -- he would have actively resisted a GM mandated "assistant." Indeed was too insecure to even hire anybody with experience when he took over, and may even have been referring to Coachie with his ill-advised "old white guy" comment after he was fired.

glad to hear about coachie. a little bummed about this donte business.

i am also glad to hear that caochie is going to come back and help the team :)
at least with donte playing in the d league at least he will get some minutes and more oppurtunties to improve
and lately he hasn't been getting any minutes on the team
and jason is going to start the next game so that is good :)

I think it read more llike. Donte to D league.

Coachie to help in NBA

Yep. Wasn't there somebody on this board that suggested that Greene should go the D league? :D My mother always said, if you don't blow your own horn, nobody else will! YEAAHHH BABY! Good move Kings. Next time I'll ask for a commission!:D

I like the Coachie move. Among other things that have been discussed, I think he's going to improve Kevin's game even more. He can really get on his A$$ when he needs to get on his A$$ because Kevin Martin respects the hell out of him.

Now that the Kings are looking to me for advice:D I would like to suggest that when they go through the process to hire the next head coach, they should involve Coachie in that process. Coachie should be in on the interviews and his opinion should carry weight in the eventual decision. I find it incredibly difficult to believe, for example, that Coachie would have recommended Theus for the head coaching position.

I think it was confirmed definitely on audio replay and discussion here that Theus said, "old white haired guy" - not the other which might get construed to have some kind of racial connotation. Also, the question he had gotten was why Theus did not go for a very experienced old-hand assistant from the beginning (you know, the Bob Weiss, Del Harris type) instead of guys like Natt, Person, etc.
