Perry introductory press conference

The only player on the team that quit isn't on the team anymore. I still am hard pressed to believe the narrative that person's camp is selling that Domas is the one who got Brown fired. Domas played hard every game he was healthy. I won't dismiss the possibility behind the scenes Domas wasn't happy with something he was asked to do, or didn't like having his share of the offense shifted to help out another player's all NBA chances, but I just didn't see a lack of effort from Domas, just a guy who plays his best given his own strengths and limitations.

Of course roster change is needed. A point guard will go a long way as will replacing Deebo with a player with some size who defends.

I think he is smack dab in the middle of being your run of the mill billionaire with a fancy toy.

I've lived in 4-5 NBA cities and spent several months in at least another half dozen early in my career when I had a full time travel job. Also see it with other sports teams I follow. So much of the scrutiny on Vivek is because he is the only game in town. The entire Monte era I did not have a single fault with Vivek's ownership.

Much of the scrutiny and reputation he has earned among national NBA media, is because Sacramento doesn't have an NFL team?

Say what? I don't follow

The national media doesn't cover the Kings. That was pretty damned apparent when 2023 it was pretty clear the playoffs were the first time most of these goofballs even watched the team.

Point to me anything he has done lately that other owners don't do? Everyone goes back to how he handled the Malone situation and the dumbass cherrypicking comment he made in 2014.

Yes, he hired a few bad GMs, who HE LET MAKE THE PICK. He stayed out.

Then he hired Monte and they had a great run until the wheels came off. Big whoop, it happens.

Extending his coach of the year with a raise and then firing him a few months later....and then basically making his executive (GM) of the year a lame duck that same season.

Does the national media cover Portland, San Antonio, Oklahoma, Orlando, etc?

The fact that you seem blissfully unaware of how dire Portland's ownership situation is would go to prove my point. What do you know about any of these ownership groups. Not much about OKC's either from past conversation.

Jumping in here in what is kind of a painful thread to read through. As a general nit to this point, why is the assumption that Vivek made the decision to extend Brown and then made the decision to fire him? Seems more likely Monte pushed to extend brown over the summer, arguing for continuity and stability that would come from that. I definitely agree Vivek wanted Brown gone, but I mean half this board was happy with that decision. From my perspective, it was actually nice that our owner agreed to eat that contract in an effort to save the season. I do appreciate that in a small market, Vivek is not a penny pinching owner (certainly could take issue with the ticket price hikes but that seems common everywhere).

I believe Vivek is a goofball, nerdy, weird guy with some wacky Silicon Valley out of the box thinking and a healthy does delusion caused by people telling him how much of a genius he was as he became a billionaire. He is impatient. When things are going well, I think he is fine keeping out of the decision making process. Happy to bask in the limelight of sitting with the random celebrity he invited to the game, and awkwardly lighting the beam with the players.

However, when things aren’t going well, he absolutely meddles. He’s inpatient and a know it all that believes he can shake things up, get us back on track, and get him back to his beam lighting fun. I absolutely believe he was generally hands off for Monte’s first couple years and he was rewarded with some fun kings basketball. Likewise, I believe he will let Perry do his thing for the next couple years. If things are headed in the right direction all will be ok, but there will absolutely be a point in time where the mood sours and the meddling returns. That’s probably true of 75% of the owners in the nba; however, Vivek’s personal peculiarities make him stand out as particularly weird and annoying when it happens.

Save the season for what? This team wasn't a contender or even a real threat to advance.

Once again, it was short sighted attempts at win now moves, when the roster is not even balanced enough to realistically advance in the post season, let alone contend for anything. Now he's stuck with the Lavine contract that nobody wanted....and doesn't even fit with the roster. We know Perry can't even pretend to be excited about him, because ironically it was already on record of what he thinks of Lavine when he had no vested interest in the situation.

Is there ever any semi-patient attempt at seeing through the development of anything at this point? I won't surprised at all if they botch the one diamond in the rough player that they were fortunate enough to find and invest some productive time in with Keon Ellis

I’m not trying to litigate the decisions that were made last year. Just assessing whether it’s feasible that Perry right NOW, is empowered to make decisions. I believe he is and that he believes he is in charge of basketball decision making. So, refuse to believe the press conference was some big ruse. I think he completely understand the dynamics with Vivek and he will operate in a way that manages his personality. I also believe there is a point in time when Vivek will once again become impatient and we will just have to see if Perry can handle that.

I would put it at a greater than 50% chance Doug is coach next year, but I don’t think that’s an egregious decision. If others around the nba view it as some Kangz move, so be it, but doesn’t seem crazy after what seemed like a strong job last year righting the ship and then navigating a lot of big challenges.

I also fully understand that while Perry seems polished and said the right things at the presser, he doesn’t exactly have a track record of consistently building winners. I’m willing to see how this plays out, but if he doesn’t make moves to build some momentum and optimism for the future I will probably start to sour on him. I also tend to believe that 75% of coaches and GMs build their reputation on a healthy does of luck (and ultimately attaching their success to a superstar) so maybe Perry is due.

Finally, this team better hurry up in getting things turned around, because if they don’t have a competent long term strategy by the time the sonics come back to Seattle I’m definitely jumping ship.

Sounds like Wilcox was more in the way than anyone else and i don’t see Monte being the confrontational type at all. It’s hard for me to imagine another cook in the kitchen with Scott Perry, just casually and actively sabotaging deals by speaking on them too soon. Clear and straight to the point, transparent communication is just what the doctor ordered over there and I’m looking forward to seeing how this coaching staff and front office staff is built over the next few weeks before we tune up this roster. I don’t feel like we’re starting at ground zero at all.

What do we know about the Wilcox/Monte tandem? I know once Ham and maybe some others thought it would be fun to start a Wilcox is the shadow GM and trying to push Monte out rumor. From what I can best puzzle together Wes may have been the contract/communications guy (clearly Monte was not a great communicator) and Monte was the talent/analytics guy.

Perry seems like a wheeler and dealer - he closed some high profile signings (for Kings) and maybe helped negotiate that Portland pick swap while here. His talent recognition seems suspect, or at least below Monte. Who knows how many lower level guys are still in the Kings system. They've done a nice job with the G-League and whoever helped identifying UDFA talent. If that was all Monte we may be cooked. But interestingly there were rumors that Keon's minutes weren't strictly a head coaching decision which makes you wonder all kinds of things? Was he a Monte guy or someone else? Or was Monte trying to keep him from award consideration if they let his option go and he's an RFA this summer?

I really wonder what Perry makes of guys like Jake and Keon among other plans for this summer. Will he look to buy back into the draft?

Vivek needs to stop treating this team like the Knicks, lakers, warriors and other large markets. He needs to stop plugging holes on a sinking ship. Let this boat sink and build a new one. Let Christie coach a bad team for 2-3 years and move on.

The press conference was just about what I would expect to hear from any incoming GM. Standard operating procedure. Divac and McNair said much of the same when they started.

If they want to run it back and see what a training camp does that should be fine. More than plugging holes the problem with this franchise and what kept them in no mans land for so long was they plugged up their cap with non needle movers all for the sake of "need". Now we see if Perry continues that long lineage of plugging holes with need while also plugging up his own exit should it not work. A smart franchise keeps things flexible and develops internally right now even if they don't blow it up. The only thing that makes some degree of sense is moving DeMar. Outside of that quit stacking a 12 deep team on paper like Monte did because we know, it doesn't work that way. Develop your own players, establish some actual assets, then when the fork comes, and it will, one way is down, the other is up, then they can actually make a legit step in a direction.

Key word for me here is "develop". They need to do quite a bit of that, instead of living month to month
