Perry introductory press conference

To his credit, he comes across as a good communicator,.....which I view as a major part of being a successful GM
He sounds like he can smooch well and his connections should facilitate trades. Hopefully, he hires some smart creative assistants that can do the groundwork. I did not hear any vision backed with possible steps that he can take. Let's see how it goes.

Yeah, it wasn't going to be that. Just basically a meet and greet

Perry: The team needs a point guard. Echoing Sabonis. I guess he doesn't buy the notion that Monk could be a starting point guard on a championship team.

Said the Kings need length and athleticism. Welcome to the party. Looking forward to see the means by which this accomplished.

On Lavine, said he's athletic, good 3 point shooter. Was obviously waiting for that question because of his prior negative view of Lavine. My Perry whisperer interpretation: Don't go looking to buy a house in Sacto, Lavine. You won't be here very long.

On Christie: He has a "presence" and he has a "connection" with the players. BUT Perry's phone is ringing off the hook from others interested in the job (and he's taking those calls). My guess: Christie is gone. We should know in about a week according to Perry.

Probably the best question was Allen Stiles, (paraphrasing): With all the upcoming decisions affecting each other where do you start? Perry didn't know what to do with that question. Gave a non-answer answer. My guess is he knows exactly where he wants to start - he already said he wants to make the coaching decision with a week or so.

I feel like Monte and Scott Perry may be comparable in terms of basketball minds, but Monte has nowhere near the mouthpiece and relationships Perry has. Sometimes it’s who you know
Monte is obviously a smart guy. But the impression I got is he wasn’t a great communicator, especially externally. And if you can’t communicate well externally, that tells me you will likely have trouble communicating your ideas internally. He said there were things he was against doing. Well if the owner is going in a different direction and overriding him, to me a big part is he didn’t get buy in to his vision and/or he had trouble articulating it.

Couldn’t agree more. Perry looks like a much better fit with Vivek. And Monte could very well be smarter than Perry, but if he’s not locked in with agents, players, other front offices and executives and can’t get the deals done or get the other parties to play ball which one is more valuable?

I would be shocked if Christie is gone. Vivek has had him in mind and a prerequisite for the team for years. He's not going to let go of that after a few month interim run with a broken up roster

Another possibility is Perry could bring in his HC and keep Doug on staff

That is much more likely than Christie being "gone".....and would also be one of the weirder things we've seen......for one guy to be a prerequisite by the owner for multiple head coaches and GM's.

I'm still betting on this being a PR move, to wait for an announcement that Christie is the head coach to give an appearance that they did a coaching search

If Christie isn't gone then it's likely that the GM as lackey to Vivek dynamic continues. If Perry brings in someone else then it's more likely he has some independence and he's not going to be an appendage of Vivek.

This isn't necessarily an "either/or" situation. There is a third alternative. At least short term, Perry may want to have DC as coach. What if he wants to take a year to make a bunch of roster moves and isn't keen on trying to tap an outside coach as he does?

DC has a winning record as coach. Other than Rick and Mike, he is the only coach the Sacramento Kings have had that is over 0.500. 40 years of coaches and only 3 with a winning record.

Maybe, just maybe, he's OK giving DC another year to see what he can do with an actual training camp and significant practice time and (hopefully) a more balanced roster that fits what DC wants to do (which seems to mirror Perry)?

Edit: Mike Brown with the Kings was 0.549 (2.5 years - regular season). DC was 0.529 (regular season).
