Peja Missing Layups

this whole athleticsm thing is garbage. we've seen peja dunk the ball many times. its clear that he can dunk, so why are we refuting that fact? and what does athleticsm have to do with a 6'10" guy not being able to lay the ball in? the "lay-up" has always been the most fundamental shot that every basketball player can make, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, athleticism, height, or any other number of factors. i'm 5'10", and not particularly athletic, but i sure as hell dont miss open layups. i dont even miss contested layups the way peja has recently. its really bizarre, and i agree with brick: its a mental thing.

Pad , you're not being guarded by Tayshaun Prince either. If you were, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get a shot off.

Otherwise, completely agree ;)

well...its all comparable. i play ball with people of my relative height and skill level. likewise, peja's playing against guys of his relative height and skill level. tayshaun prince has had a couple of amazing blocks in his career, but its not like he's shaq clogging the paint. peja focuses too much on avoiding a shot-block that he loses sight of the lay-up completely. he needs to either start aiming for that white square in the middle of the backboard (ya know, the way they teach ya in 5th grade), or he needs to throw it down. thats right peja, i'm talkin to you. dunk the damn thing! i know you're capable!

but one positive thing that you may be able to see from this is that there's a greater tendency that he can get to the line(where he is money) & shoot his way out of a slump(if he's in one).

From what I've seen, Stojakovic is good at making layups, especially for someone who doesn't/can't dunk much. There's no big urgency for him to improve. If you want someone who misses layups look at his backup (or at least he used to the first time he was with the Kings).

This is Peja's first game back since the Webber trade. Obviously he knows that a lot of Kings fans point to him as the cause of Webber being traded. He was probably a bit nervous to perform in front of the Arco frenzy. Give him some games and hell do fine.

the guy's a catch-and-shoot player. anything else is awkward for him.
it seems to me that he tried to do some other things yesterday and maybe tried to create some of his own shots. sad thing is it didn't work.
maybe that's something else he can work on during the off-season, eh?

I don't know what some of you are watching. Peja missing lay-ups is not a rececnt thing. He has been doing it for a while. I can recall some games last year when he missed some. A layup is the most fundamental shot there is. If you're 6'10" there is no reason for you to miss a layup. If you're blocked then fine but if there is someone around you all you have to do is jump and practically tap it into the hoop. As good as he was on those cuts that Christie found him on he missed some of those as well.

By the way, according to 82games.com, Stojakovic's inside fg percentage is as good as Bibby's, and much better than Miller's, Evans', Songaila's, etc.

Do you all really think that Peja misses too many layups? I just don't see it that way.

Maybe it's just that the ones he seems to miss are SO wide open and generally uncontested!

Peja's problem is he is always trying to draw the foul or worried about being blocked and seems tentative. Just make the friggin shot and don't worry about it. Even if he does get fouled he's big enough(and I would assume strong enough at 240lbs) to finish the shot and get to the free throw line.

That's a very deceptive stat for Peja, because the vast majority of his inside shots are off of passes from teammates and are relatively uncontested (relatively) whereas Brad or Mike have probably gotten inside there with their own dribble through traffic and with their man on their hip. Much tougher situation. Its like comparing Fred Hoiberb's three point shooting and Ray Allen's last year -- was Fred REALLY a better shooter than Ray? Or was the fact of the matter that his shots were almsot all open looks created by teammates while Ray had to create his own. (Also would not exactly be using Brad and Mike as paragons of finishing ability (Mike is actually good when left reasonably open)).

I know. That is why I didn't post it the first time. However, if Stojakovic was so bad at layups, you would expect that despite what you state above, the percentages would be a little closer, and at least one guy would have a better percentage. Anyway, the reason I disagree with the premise of the thread is not based on those stats - I looked those up later. My observations have always led me to think that Stojakovic is average or above average at layups despite his inability to dunk or come strong.
