Cleveland Fires Jim Paxson21st April, 2005 - 3:25 pm
Cavaliers Press Release - The Cleveland Cavaliers released President and General Manager of Basketball Operations Jim Paxson today after seven years with the organization, six years in the role of general manager. The announcement was made by Dan Gilbert, Cavaliers majority owner.

In addition, Gilbert announced that Brendan Malone will not be a candidate for head coach next season. Malone became the head coach of the Cavaliers, taking over for Paul Silas on March 22nd, 2005.

"I would like to thank Jim Paxson for his seven years of service to the Cavaliers organization. Jim has worked hard and made some moves in the past couple of years that has put our team in a position to go to the next level. However, the new ownership team believes it is time for a new direction in leadership in the basketball operations side of the business," said Gilbert.

Although Brendan Malone was informed he will not be a candidate for the Cavaliers head coaching position, Malone will stay with the organization in a capacity to be determined by the yet to be named new general manager and new head coach.

"Brendan Malone took over a team that was going through an extended, difficult stretch during a critical part of the season, having lost 9 of their prior 12 games. Brendan and the team fought hard to make the playoffs and, although tying New Jersey for the 8th and final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs, as we all know, the tie breaker went to New Jersey. I am proud of Brendan's efforts, " continued Gilbert.

"Brendan went 8-10 in the 18 games he was head coach. He faced a very difficult part of the schedule, with an immense amount of pressure for the Cavaliers to make the playoffs. Although we came up just short, I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the professional manner in which Brendan handled both the team and himself during this time, " Gilbert said.

The Cavaliers improved from 35 wins in the 2003-2004 season to 42 wins and their first finish over .500 since the 1997-98 season.

"Although it's a step in the right direction, it's not good enough for the fans, the community, the players, the hundreds of dedicated and hard working employees of the Cavs, nor certainly the new ownership team. We are all here to win championships. No other goal is more important," Gilbert added.

"LeBron James has grown and matured into one of the best basketball players to play the game in only his second year in the league. This gives our organization an advantage unlike any other. It is no secret that this team will be built around LeBron with players who have shown the desire, passion, work ethic, team approach, and skills necessary to build a culture and environment of winning at the highest levels, " Gilbert remarked.

"I also want to let Cavalier fans everywhere know this ownership team will stop at nothing to bring in the best basketball people possible to lead and drive this process. It all starts with our search for a new general manager and head coach. That search is officially underway," continued Gilbert.

Paxson released the following statement.

"I want to thank the Cavaliers organization for the time I've been here, there are many hard working and very talented people with the organization that I wish the best for. I also want to thank Gordon Gund and say how much I appreciate his support and guidance over the years. He is truly one of the most remarkable persons I know and it was a privilege to have worked for, and with, him. I was in a position that required us to travel through some difficult times, but we did so in order to put the franchise in the favorable position it is now in for this summer. Everything done over the last several years was done so with this summer as the target for substantial growth.

I also want to wish Dan Gilbert and the new ownership team every success in the future."

This wasn't a big surprise. Gilbert had better bring a strong GM in there because after this season, there will be some serious pressure for this organization to improve very rapidly.

What Gilbert had better do is let his strong GM do his job rather than have a dilitante running aorund mucking up the works and spouting pathetic platitudes.

Gilbert is an idiot. I firmly believe the Cleveland Cavaliers fans should rise up en masse and make it obvious how they feel. He (Gilbert) has taken a team on the way up and destroyed them. Instead of getting rid of Paul Silas and now Paxson, Gilbert should get his head out of his arse and realize he knows NOTHING about owning a basketball team.

However, the new ownership team believes it is time for a new direction in leadership in the basketball operations side of the business," said Gilbert.
If that wasn't so pathetic it would be totally and completely laughable. A "new direction"? Yeah, down is always so much better than up.

Geez...

Go Dan Gilbert, go! The more incompetent he is the more likely Bron will be looking for a way out. That is the only way to land a Star these days, it seems. Sucks if it’s your team, but… I don’t think Houston and NJ are upset that Orlando and Toronto have bad management.

Heh -- somehow I don't think Sacramento would be where he'd land. Nice to dream though. :)

Hello, Dan Gilbert? Yes, this is Geoff Petrie -- have I got a deal for an astute basketball mind like yourself! How would you like to acquire the entire roster of one slighly used perennial playoff team for the low low bargain price of ONLY one player!!

BB is still a team game. LBJ is a great talent but not good enough to make sure that his team gets into PO yet. Also LBJ profits from the fact that NBA has no rules. His fundamentals are not that good. During Olympics he traveled and carried ball more than anyone else. He might be worth one or two players but certainly not the entire roster

I'll do it, I won my Yahoo fantasy league if that counts for anything.

I also have LeBron on my Kings NBA Live fantasy draft team.

I think I'm more qualified than many.

Gilbert is frustrated with the lack of success that his money and super star have yet to bring home. So lacking a deep insight and compelled to do SOMETHING he fires the GM. This may also be part of an all out effort to recruit a top shelf coach (read Phill) bu allowing the lucky guy to pick his own boss.

Frustrated? Already? Geez...he's owned the team part of a season, fired a coach who had them in good position for the playoffs and now axed the GM? It's probably a good thing he owns the team and doesn't have to answer to a board of directors because I'm pretty sure they'd be calling for HIS head on a platter...

LeBron is not better than anybody's entire roster, but he WOULD be worth it IMHO because with him you KNOW you have "that guy". You know it. Its by far the hardest thing to find in basketball, or really any sport. The all-time great talent. And when the all-time great talent is 20 yrs old...here, take the team, give me LeBron. All I have to do is put together the right supporting cast, and I've got all the cap room and star power to draw FAs I;d ever need. I've got my superstar, and he's better than yours, and will be for another 15 years. Barring utter incompetence, should be a few guaranteed championships in there before he's done. There are no guarantees trying to fake your way through without that guy.

The question would be, would you have traded your whole team to get MJ at 20? If you answer no, you're nuts. You've got the best player in the world on your team for practically forever -- the rest will follow.

What? LeBron James couldn't carry the 2004-05 Cleveland Cavaliers to the playoffs?

:: dies of shock ::

You could do a one-for-one swap with LeBron James and any player in the league, and Cleveland still wouldn't have made the playoffs.
