Pacers name Jim O'Brien new Head Coach

Perfectly mediocre. When was the last time the Pacers made a good personnel move? Bird and Walsh are running that franchise straight into the ground.

Golden State trade - bad
Peja for Al Harrington (essentially) - bad (given that they replaced Al half a season later with Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy and gave up their 11th pick)
Austin Croshere for Marquis Daniels - bad (at least Croshere was expiring)
Artest for Peja - bad
Traded James Jones for 2nd Rounder - bad
Signed Jasekevicious - bad
Drafted Danny Granger - good!
Overpaid Jamaal Tinsley - bad
Al Harrington for Steven Jackson - mixed
Brad Miller for Scot Pollard - bad

Yikes!!! Ever since Bird came on board it's been pretty horrendous.

Every Celtic who becomes a GM sucks.

I don't understand this hiring at all. Instead of hiring a re-tread like O'Brien why not take a flyer on an up and coming assitant coach like Brian Shaw or maybe Dwayne Casey who, as it turned out, was doing a pretty good job with Minny when he was canned last year considering how they finished.

I like Jim a LOT. He is a good coach. Not the best in the NBA, but not a downgrade from Carlisle either.

He can't make something out of nothing, but he can utilize the talent he has to great effect.

And he knows how to call a time out... That is a huge plus to me.

the only thing he's in Carlisle's class as is as a guy who knows how to be inflexible and lose his team. In his case wiht some junked up Pitino-light bush league fullcourt pressure system. He's not the worst coach in the league, but he's shown absolutely nothing to make you think he could be an elite guy. Its just such a wildly unabmbitious choice. Its getting hard to remember that only three years ago they looked like they had a young squad on the brink of multiple runs at the title. Now they are a complete mess.

I think it's a horrible signing by the Pacers. If this is their choice, why not just keep Carlisle. The approach they're taking looks like trouble to me. I thought they fired Carlisle to make a move that would be more accommodating to their star, but they hire someone to be a disciplinarian. And Bird is talking about how he's willing to trade anyone, even O'Neal. It's no wonder the team went to **** soon after Isiah, of all people, left. They'll get junk for O'Neal because any player worth their salt will veto a move to Indiana.

It is sort of like a game: They were sick of Rick, so they got someone else... it will be at least a season before they realize it is the same guy... but that still gives them time...

But aren't you a Pistons fan?

;)

Interesting that the Bee article today, about SVG interview with the Maloofs, says SVG turned down an offer from the Pacers to become their coach. Apparently he really would prefer to be the Kings coach.

Exactly.

This is worse than us getting rid of Adelman and signing Musselman. O'Brien has proven that he's not a good coach in two different cities. He couldn't get Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce to play their best ball together, instructing everyone on the team to shoot nothing but three-pointers, and he got run out of town. He choked the life out of the 76ers and got run out of town.

My guess is he won't last more than 2 seasons in Indiana.

He actually did better than anyone else could in Boston - turning Pitino's garbage into contenders for the admittedly terrible East, but he's still a poor coach and the job he pulled in Philly proved it. His style also doesn't seem to play well with the fans but Indy has never been known for their exciting style of play so maybe they won't care.

I know he was probably never on our radar but since it looks like we won't get our first choice I'm glad he's off the market :)
