OT: Nate McMillan takes the Portland job

hm. thats interesting. he must have saw serious $$$ in portland to leave a promising situation in seattle. despite all their free agency concerns, seattle is still gonna be a pretty good team next season. portland, on the other hand, doesn't have a whole lot going for them at the moment.

Now there's a shocker! Especially the day after Allen re-signed......

owens,

read the NBA forum on the ray allen thread and check out my comment I posted yesterday. I live here in Seattle, and I loved Nate as a player, but a coach he is not. Couldn't wait to see him go. Plus, the sonics couldn't pay him after re-signing Ray yesterday.

Sorry guys, still getting used to the way things are done around here. Have patience with me, i'll get the hang of it....

Owens,

Just noticed where you are from. Yes, I can see what you mean about the way things are done back in KY. I'm sure any KU fans would welcome Rick Pitino back with open arms.

We won't let him go back. Pitino found salvation and i think they're a little too PO'd to take him back now anyway....
Funny you called them KU. They hate that.... LOL

It is Official now

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Nate McMillan is leaving the Seattle SuperSonics to coach the Portland Trail Blazers. ESPN.com Insider Chad Ford reports that McMillan agreed to a five-year contract.
The Blazers late Wednesday night hired McMillan, who led the SuperSonics to the Northwest Division title this past season. He will be introduced Thursday at a news conference, the Blazers said in a statement.

McMillan's contract with the Sonics expired Thursday and the Blazers aggressively pursued him.

"We are feeling a mixture of pride in his accomplishments as the head coach of the Sonics and sorrow that he will not be a part of our organization going forward," Sonics president and CEO Wally Walker said in a statement. "Our last compensation discussion detailed a proposal that on average would have made Nate one of the five highest paid active NBA coaches. While we made him a fair offer, we in no way begrudge Nate's ability to earn more than we could offer."

McMillan was believed to be the Blazers' No. 1 choice all along, with the team also talking to former Blazers player and Bucks ex-coach Terry Porter and Phoenix assistant Marc Iavaroni.

The Blazers appeared close to offering the job to Iavaroni in late June, with the caveat that they first wanted a shot at luring McMillan away from the SuperSonics. The New York Times reported Sunday that Portland is offering McMillan an annual salary of $6 million.

McMillan replaces interim coach Kevin Pritchard, who took over from the fired Maurice Cheeks when the Blazers embarked on a youth movement in midseason.

McMillan had coached the Sonics since Nov. 27, 2000 and compiled a 212-193 record.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Yeah, my bad for calling Kentucky "KU"-when I played basketball in high school my coach always cheered for some team named UK and I told him it sounded bad because we live in the USA, not the United Kingdom-and he corrected me to Kentucky University. I still think it's wrong and it sounds wrong as well.

When I refer to Kansas, I call them Jayhawk U

lol what nate did was cold going to the rival team

Nate didn't do seattle wrong-he was long overdue to be gone. He will be a perfect fit for the Jailblazers.

He went as well for the Money.

McMillian signs....with the Blazers!

Nate McMillian is said to have agreed to a 5 year deal with the Portland Trailblazers. It's been on ESPNews as breaking news for a little while.

Many people thought signing Ray Allen would put McMillian in the bag for resigning. It is a huge suprise to see Nate leave the in which he played most of his playing career and coached all of his coaching career so far, especially after the Sonics resigned Allen.

The future of the Seattle job is obviously up in the air, and there will be much discussion and talk about who should, could, and will get the position.

Who knows, Ray Allen may have to reconsider his "signing", although he may have to use his Gentleman's card and hold on to the deck he is playing with, which is his dignity and honor.

We shall see if there is a ripple effect to this signing. I say, let the waves come.

*edit* ack... the OT is in the Kings section...I only looked at the NBA section for a thread on McMillian... Even though it doesn't make sense to me to have it in the Kings section, I'm sorry.*edit*

Quite surprising, although one wonders if Nate realized that he was going to have a tough time duplicating his success and/or market value after this past season with the same Seattle team.

During the pre-season last year(October 2004) I personally asked Howard Schultz what the situation with Nate would be for the season.

He looked at me and said plain and simply "anything short of a championship will have this town with a new coach".

I guess Howard was serious-I'm sure if Ray was not a free agent after this past season and the Sonics falling in the second round Nate would have been canned.

Well that certainly doesn't make much sense, given that the Sonics were susposed to suck before the season started and at no point looked to be better than the true elite teams. Also seems that Nate made the choice to bail, perhaps sensing the lack of support.
