Open letter to the Maloofs

So, 2012 hasn't been real good for you so far. You didn't do much to improve your image with Kings fans by backing out of the arena deal that just about anyone not named Maloof realized was the best possible offer you were going to get.

Now, the Kings have acquired another exciting young player that should keep fans coming to PBP to watch THEIR team play. And please...make no mistake about it. You may hold the contracts on the players but it's the fans of the Sacramento Kings who truly own them. You underestimated us when you arbitrarily decided you could just pick them up and move to Anaheim and you're underestimating us now.

We will not desert OUR team and we will show the players the support and devotion as we always have. Right now, though, we're not feeling very confident about what you will do as owners to get this team back on the right track - headed towards the playoffs and not towards fishing trips in the middle of April.

If you want to show us that you're sincere about making this team competitive again, allow Geoff Petrie to spend whatever it takes to get some quality free agents on the team. We have gaping holes in our roster that must be addressed and we have a logjam of guards that needs to be broken up.

Stand up and show yourselves to be worthy of being NBA owners. Give the loyal fans of the Sacramento Kings a team they can appreciate and support. It'll be good for the players, it'll be good for the fans, and it'll be good for you.

The ball, as they say, is in your court.

Dear VF21,

Thank you for your concern and we certainly hope this is an exciting year for "Maloof Sports and Entertainment presents the Sacramento Kings". We think continued improvement from our young and talented players and the addition of Thomas Robinson will be enough to make the team competitive and fun for our fans to watch. We are certainly willing to spend money but our goal is to keep our team together and watch them grow by hopefully (meaning if they don't cost too much) bringing back Jason Thompson and Terrence Williams.

We thank you for your loyal support and hope you will continue to cheer our efforts to field a winning team by supporting us as we apply to move the team to Anaheim this March. Should we be unsuccessful we will fight an unfair league on behalf of our fans by filing an anti-trust suit. The money we gained by selling our 2nd round draft pick could help us in this fight.

Wish us luck and go Kings/Royals.

I appreciate your sentiments VF21 and I sincerely hope that I am wrong, but it's hard to view the events of the last few months and have much optimism for the Maloof's stewardship of this franchise especially as it pertains to Sacramento and it's fans.

Once they turned down the arena deal it was clear to me that an endgame had begun. Whether it will be the Maloofs moving the team or no longer being team owners I don't know, but the circumstances are tenuous at best.

Again, this is MY team and I am a loyal Sacramento Kings fan so I absolutely want to be wrong, but my gut feeling is that you will see the Maloofs continue to be awful owners until things change. And they will because one way or another something has to give here.

PS:
I forgot to tell you to put your family in our familie's shoes.

I hope you can still remember that when we were rich, we've been very good to Sacramento. But I hope you understand that like every family we also have some ups and downs. We are not that rich anymore and stand to loose more if we don't do what we are doing now. If we think moving to Anaheim will let us regain back the money we've lost, then we will go for it. Or put it this way, our backs are against the wall, so be patient with us.

BTW, we allowed Petrie to spend some money last year. I am so sorry if he got you Salmons, Hayes, Outlaw and drafted Jimmer. I apologize too (and this is just between you and me) if he was not able to balance the team with these boneheaded acquisitions. Petrie comes cheap too and we don't want to lose him so don't quote us on this one. But don't worry, he will get lucky next time.

Good one, VF21. I admit to being pretty pessimistic about things, but haven't given up. I keep hoping that behind the scenes, they are being backed into selling the team. That's my dream.

I've been a Kings fan since the beginning also but I refuse to spend another dime on Maloof Sports and Entertainment. Until these bums sell the team, I'll just read about the games.
I don't trust these liers.

That is certainly your right and a lot of people seem to agree with you.

I'm not going to punish the guys that are out their playing for the Kings, though, by not showing up to cheer them on and support them. I'm not going to let more people get laid off from their jobs at the arena, because fewer and fewer people go to events and games there.

Besides people staying away isn't going to get the Maloofs to decide to stay here or spend more money on the team. It'll just give them more ammunition for their argument to leave Sacramento. I want Stern and the NBA to know we love our Kings, we just hate the Maloofs.

You're welcome to do whatever you want. But if all the fans decide not to show up for the games, then you'd be playing into good old George's hands. It would give him an excuse to use for moving the team. So far Sacramento has done everything asked of it to keep the team here, and the onnus is on the Maloofs right now. Lets show up for the games and keep it there.

I'm not so sure it makes any difference what the fans do at this point. Stern doesn't have a short memory and he knows how all this evolved. Over the decades capped by the last year, the Kings fans have shown everyone who they are and their allegiance to this team. If fans don't show up, I suspect Stern will understand that the Maloofs are at fault. Let's not underestimate him. He's our ally and we deserve that. As a sidenote, if this team wins at a greater clip than last year, fans will show up anyway. There is nothing like watching a win and I think all these resolutions about not attending will go out the window. Maybe things will not change for Rug King but I think a lot of these vows are spur of the moment vows generated by emotion and can change.

It's not just about, Stern, IMHO. It's about the players who are out there trying to play the game despite all the drama and turmoil around them. I'll go to as many games as possible next season to support THEM. And, in the larger sense, it's because I am still and always be a fan of the Sacramento Kings. To stay away just isn't part of my DNA.

I have no ties to the city of Sacramento (other than this great forum), or any NBA team for that matter. If the Maloofs don't commit to either selling the team or spending money to improve the team fairly soon then I think it's time to move on to greener pastures. Because great NBA fans like ourselves deserve owners who can afford to put a quality team on the court.
