Oklahoma City Thunder?

Storm is not masculine sounding, at least not as masculine sounding as Thunder. And no, there are no WNBA teams named "Lightning."

Sounds cheap.

Should have gone with Outlaws, as mentioned in the article. Wouldn't it be great if the OKC Outlaws then traded for Artest, Zach Randolph, and half of the Pacers? :D

It's not that bad of a name and very relevant for the area. Some of the loudest thunder I've ever heard on earth was in OKC when I lived there for a couple years. That worlds worst tornado alley is scary when those big booms and lightening hit leading up to a storm.

Yeah! I thought it fit too. It may not be great, but I don't think it is that bad.

Besides the "weather" significance, maybe the new ownership also wanted to incorporate Thunder name as signifying their LOUD home court in OKC. I saw on TV a couple of NBA games when the Hornets used their facility and it was roaring loud in that little arena. By contrast it was almost a morgue back in New Orleans.

If the name is cheesy then no more than Heat or Suns referring to the climate in those places or Magic referring to Disney World.

I generally don't like names that aren't actual objects...concepts, ideas, and in this case...well...sound waves, just shouldn't be mascots.

Eh, the mascot should be of little-to-no concern when selecting a team name. I mean, who's buying merchandise with the mascot's picture on it? I'm more interested in seeing what the team colors and logo look like.

Well, I should have been more specific. By mascot, I meant the team name, the logo, mascot, etc. all rolled into one. I don't place a whole lot of weight on mascots, either...I don't know...it just bugs me that it's not a physical object.

Well, maybe the Thunder get to go with Black and some other color for trim. Black, as in dark, gloomy, threatening thunder clouds. I think the only other teams with Black are Spurs (white/silver trim) and Heat (red/orange trim).

BTW, I originally heard Thunderbirds and Thundercats were also in the running along with lots of other names.

Don't forget the Blazers and 76ers (blue I think is an alternate for them)

Not too bad. Sort of close to the Sonics (sonic boom... thunder booms... sort of close). I liked Barons but Thunder would be fine.

Hey now, "Jazz" was a great name... until they left New Orleans...

Agreed. It might have been fine in Sactown too, if they'd come here instead since we're host to the world famous Jazz Jubilee. I think that major annual event started around mid 80's about the time Kings got here and after Jazz had already shipped out to Utah. Oh well, I'm really glad we've got the name Kings in Sac - if we can now just keep it!
