All-Star
First off, my apology to the mods if this should have been posted elsewhere -- maybe create a free agency/trades combo sticky? An "if I were Geoff Petrie this summer I would do X" sort of thing?
Anyway, if I were Geoff Petrie, here's what I'd do, and I'm trying to keep this as realistic as possible.
#1 - resign Maurice Evans. I like Evans. He's got the energy, he's developing a nice jump shot, he can play some killer defense and he has the athleticism to be a shorter Bruce Bowen (play great D, hit the open 3's)
#2 - let Mobley go. Just walk away, Cuttino. Nothing to see here. Unless of course he's used in a sign and trade, which is pretty unlikely in my opinion -- I don't think the Maloofs are going to take on the $7-$8 million in extra salary that the traded-for player(s) would command.
#3 - trade Corliss Williamson or Kenny Thomas to Portland for Shareef Abdur-Rahim in a sign and trade. I actually think this could be doable. Portland is going to need some help on the front line if they release Ratliff in the amnesty thing, and certainly they could use someone sane like Corliss in their budding insane asylum. The Nets are supposed to be going for Abdur-Rahim with the midlevel exception, but the Kings could pay him more in the sign and trade scenario. I like Abdur-Rahim's versatility, he's a solid rebounder, and he fits the Kings' system.
#4 - don't be sentimental about Bobby Jackson - Love Bobby. You don't find awesome backup point guard 6th-Man candidates for $3 mil every day. However. Bobby is probably at his peak in value right now. He's 32. He's a free agent next season. If throwing in Bobby will help make a killer trade, do it.
#5 - try and sign Bonzi Wells on the cheap (i.e. no more than $3 mil) - yes, he's a head case. But after watching him tear up the Kings time and again, I'm thinking Sactown might be the right place for him to resurrect his career. He could probably be affordable with all the shooting guards on the market and the problems he had in Memphis. Is he a good fit for Sacramento's system? Couldn't be worse than Mobley!
Here's your team. Four all-stars in the starting five and Bobby, Thomas and Evans off the bench:
Starting five -
Mike Bibby
Bonzi Wells
Peja Stojakovic
Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Brad Miller
Bench -
Bobby Jackson
Kenny Thomas
Maurice Evans
Kevin Martin
Francisco Garcia
Brian Skinner
Greg Ostertag
