A four-team deal sending Shawn Marion to the Dallas Mavericks has been approved by the league office and was to be formally announced by the teams on Thursday.

Marion is set to receive a five-year contract from the Mavericks worth an estimated $39 million, according to sources.

Under the sign-and-trade deal, the Orlando Magic traded Hedo Turkoglu to the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors sent Marion, Kris Humphries, Nathan Jawai and cash considerations to Dallas, while also sending a future second round draft pick to the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Mavericks in turn shipped Jerry Stackhouse and cash considerations to the Grizzlies and Devean George and Antoine Wright to Toronto, while the Grizzlies dealt Greg Buckner to Dallas.

Wow--Dallas didn't have to give up anything, in terms of talent, for this trade, but got decent talent back nonetheless. They got rid of two terrible players--Antoine Wright and Devean George--and their major trading chip in Stack for (albeit a washed up) Marion and two young players in Humphries and Jawai. I'm really skeptical about offering Marion that sort of contract, and I sense a major decline in his game since he's losing the three pt shot and his game relies heavily on athleticism, but now that he's back on his perch as basically 4th-5th best player on the team (hopefully his ego can stomach it) he can be serviceable as a fill in the blanks sort of guy. Humphries is a guy I like--young, talented (rebounds and has an inside-outside game that's NBA caliber) but utterly stupid--complete black hole, lacks decision making/passing ability, but the problems are mental and can be corrected. Good trade for Dallas--you can tell they really want to up in that contending perch, and while there's tons of variables such as their collective age/chemistry, they've done a good job this offseason.

Raptors are just...strange. Giving that huge contract to Bargnani, bandying another one to Turkoglu and now trading a guy as productive as Humphries for two scrubs just doesn't cut it (and losing Anthony Parker as well). They're trying to take in players and cut costs at the same time, and I think they sorely lack an identity. Bosh probably won't come back either.

Back to the topic at hand - exactly WHAT is Orlando getting out of the "sign-and-trade"?

Ah, thanks! How's life in Idaho, BTW? I was going to suggest you tell Jeremy to change your name but Boise Brian just sounds ... ... well, let's just say "L.A. Brian" sounds better.

:)

Yeah, I just don't like how it sounds either.....I'm not quite sure how long my stay in Boise will last anyway. I'll have a better idea towards the end of the year. Barring a relative lack of culture (especially compared to L.A.), it's a city that offers a great quality of life. I live in the nicest part of town, and not once have I felt unsafe in or around my neighborhood (even stumbling back home from downtown late at night after hitting the bars/clubs). But the hunt for a good steady job has been brutal. Plan B was to get a job in Japan, but that will require me to get a federal job, as the whole English-teaching thing that so many do to get over there isn't an option now (I did the whole recruiting thing, and I got less and less interested the more that my zombie-like recruiters talked about it). With a background in media and given our current job market, getting a federal job could be a tall order.
