Official 24 thread for 2007...

Unbelievable- I will be discrete in case any of you haven't seen it yet.

The shock 30 minutes into tonight was more unexpected than anything I saw last week with Curtis or the bomb. Absolutely stunning.

Who would have guessed that HE was going to turn out to be who he is???

Keifer Sutherland has said on various talk shows that this season is going to really keep us on the edge of our seats... I think he's prone to understatement. I swear I didn't breathe from the time HE showed up until the very end...

Wow.

This changes the dynamic for the whole show for a while. Now it makes you go back to last season and try to remember certain scenes that would have given you a clue...but I don't think there were any.

The funny thing is that I've always assumed that because Jack's family was so ripped apart in the first few seasons that I never considered the REST of them. I feel so short-sighted sometimes when it comes to this show. :o I guess that's why I'm not a writer....and just fan instead!

Last season heck... based on one or two comments I may have to go back to Day 1 to check some stuff.

Honestly I don't think writers had the bluetooth guys as Jac's brother last season. They had no clue. They figured they need a good spin for this season so let's give it a try. Sometimes they write/make changes as they go along.

Fun episode though.

I think it may well have been planned all along... From what I read somewhere they had the next two seasons mapped out before Day 6 started filming.

I do most of my tv chat at twop so excuse me for just stumbling in here...

Do you all really lack the self control on the west coast (or if you're tivoing) not to check in on this thread before you've seen the current episode or is it all part of the game? My fiancee is the same way but I guess I have trained myself well to avoid these things (being a boxing fan really helps). It just seems it would be more fun to chat about the show without having to guess what the person above really meant :) Does Kings Fans have spoiler tags?

I'm liking this season so far. And thankfully Fox didn't dump Prison Break until March or April like they did last year. Now Monday nights are completely booked for me.

By tradition, people on the East Coast don't post anything that might be termed a spoiler until after the show has aired here on the West Coast. And we on the West Coast generally don't pop in to the thread until we've watched the episode, just to be sure.

;)

It's a lot more fun to participate in a thread knowing there won't be a spoiler.

Us Midwest/east coast folks keep discipline and don't comment until it is done airing on the west coast. Otherwise we'd have to fear VF21 banning us :)

Technically I don't have to worry but its just kind of funny reading some of the stuff that is well after the show aired and trying to figure out if your wtf moment was the same as my wtf moment :) I haven't seen every season so I take almost as much delight in seeing Kumar and the crazy lady from Melrose Place back on tv as I get from the big reveal of tonight's episode.

On game nights, we try to respect those regular 24 fans who might have TiVo'd 24 and are watching it when they get home...

;)

Okay, I just watched it again... Anybody else think Jack's "nephew" John is going to end up being Jack's son???? Just a thought...

I think the odds of that are very very good.

And man, who saw bluetooth dude as his brother. Damn, that was out of left field.

Seeing Jack's reaction, I was thinking exactly the same thing.

Yeah that almost seems to obvious. I didn't like the way they set up Blue Tooth/Brother Dude's immediate family (the Rena Sofer character obviously has some history with Jack). Between the big reveal that Blue Tooth guy was Jack's brother, throwing in the added info that his whole family may be evil and that the evil guy's wife and Jack have some history its just a little too over the top.

Well, it's not like the rest of 24 isn't over the top. I mean terrorists blowing up nukes in LA, a moron president that's unwittingly doing stuff to help them out, and a James Bond-esque agent named Jack Bauer somehow consistently rescues the country from annihilation.

Nothing unrealistic about this show.

Its not the unrealistic that bugs me its the cliche part I don't care for. Nukes actually going off and this particular moron president are still kind of interesting plot elements.

Here is a pretty good interview with executive producer of 24.

http://www.tvweek.com/page.cms?pageId=520

24' Executive Producer Howard Gordon Discusses the Sixth Season of the Show Chuck Ross: Hello again everybody, it's Chuck Ross, editorial director here at TelevisionWeek, and we're on with Day Six with "24," and of course we're on with Howard Gordon, executive producer and show runner.
I thought last night's episode was very interesting. I think you guys kind of slowed it down a little bit and gave us a little more character development. We had such an adrenaline rush with those first four hours, I think we got to learn a little more plot.
Howard Gordon: Yeah, it was a little reset, and just a breath to reset everything. And I think it was a welcome relief from the relentlessness of the first four episodes, but of course we also have to process the big news of this nuclear bomb going off in Valencia, which, though it was a combination of those first episodes, requires us to just process it.

Mr. Ross: Last year dealt with the deaths of Tony and Edgar,; a lot of fans were wondering since we had Curtis killed, what the reaction would be. I actually like the way it was handled. It was clear, I thought, that Chloe was upset, what happened with Buchanan, obviously Jack's reaction. Some of the fans though, told me that they would have hoped they would have turned on the set and seen him with an IV stuck to him trying to revive him. And secondly, they thought maybe a little more due could have been played to him by some of the players.
Mr. Gordon: I don't disagree. Part of the dilemma was the nuclear bomb, which I think eclipsed the Curtis mourning period. So I think those two things in a sense fought each other and I think Chloe as least acknowledged it, but as part of this broader feeling of, "I can't believe this is really happening."
Mr. Ross: If you had been a fan of the show for a while, wouldn't we have known that…maybe Jack had a brother?
Mr. Gordon: Well I think one of the great gifts of "24" is we only meet people for the course of this one day. We've known Jack for six years, but we only know six days of his life. And there are plenty of days that go by without me talking to my brother.
Mr. Ross: That's an excellent point and one I think is lost on…
Mr. Gordon: Exactly. You don't know everything about everybody in a single day of their lives.

Mr. Ross: The conceit of the show, something that makes it so smart, is the fact that we learn hour by hour of every day, yet some of us who have been watching the show forget exactly what you say, Howard: We haven't had a window of many years like you would on a show that's done … without the hour-by-hour basis. That's an excellent point.I loved the way we left it at the end where Jack certainly knows his brother and we got back to the old Jack Bauer and little goose bumps go up and down your back as he puts the plastic bag over his brother's head.
Mr. Gordon: Yeah that generated some debate on staff whether it was a little extreme, but I think it turned out rather well.

Mr. Ross: As someone on the creative side, but who also has the executive producer responsibilities…do you look at the ratings?
Mr. Gordon: I look at them obsessively. I call at 7 o'clock in the morning, then 7:05, then 7:12, until I get an answer.

Mr. Ross: You're up against what has become a hit show on NBC, I think it's fair to call "Heroes" a hit show…that's tough competition.
Mr. Gordon: I was very happy with the way it came out, with the way we fared. I think we're pretty much on par with last year and I was concerned that "Heroes" would take a bite out of our audience. I think we held our own pretty well.
Mr. Ross:As the season progresses, I think your male demo is going to get stronger, and maybe some of the females might go over to "Heroes." But I think the core fans-not to say there are not a lot of women who are core fans of your show…
Mr. Gordon: It just proves there's an audience for both shows, which I think is great.

Mr. Ross: Right, and I think the more great television we have, it just draws more and more viewers to that show.
Mr. Gordon: Everyone rides on the same tide, yeah.
Mr. Ross: Is there anything you want to tell us that I haven't mentioned about last night's episode?
Mr. Gordon: I was very happy with the episode. I thought it actually held together very well. It's always a trick to get these transition episodes, but I think what this promises is something that fans, who may have been surprised that Jack had a brother and had a first love, has a father. But we'll see more about Jack's past and answer some questions about why Jack is Jack.
Mr. Ross: A couple fans said that maybe that young man might have paternal interest with Jack.
Mr. Gordon: I got that from a couple of people too. We'll see. It's a good speculation. Right now he's not, but you know, maybe people know something we don't know.

Mr. Ross: Well Howard, thank you so much, again. Great work this season. I can't imagine how difficult it is to come up with six days that are so different. As a fan, I thank you, and we'll talk to you again next week.
Mr. Gordon: Thank you.

I've known people who ended up marrying a sibling's ex-boy or girlfriend, so I didn't find the possibility of that particular plot twist any more over the top than anything else. In fact, it could easily explain some of the brother's animosity towards Jack...

--------------------

vj9999 - Thanks for posting the article. I found it very interesting. And he's right - a lot of us fans feel we really know Jack but we've only seen six days of his life. I think the writers are still peeling the onion, so to speak, on the Jack Bauer mystique. I just hope they don't go too far down the angst path...

Oooooooookay...

Anybody gonna guess the over/under on how much longer Jack's brother has to live?

;)

Loved the previews...

Jack's brother, back in his office and back strapped to a chair, whining as Jack says to him:

"You're going to experience pain I can't even describe."

Oh yeah...

Jack is back.

:p

My guess is he lives until the last or 2nd to last episode (it's a "24" tradition that the bad guys you hate the most always find a way to slip away from their initial captures) The show seems to have slowed down just a wee bit after the nuke went off; maybe it's just hard to continue with the same anxiety after that. I wonder if there's more at stake then the 4 remaining nukes.
