Try to be objective here. I know that if I put the who is the better euro-player, Darius vs Dirk, one-third of you would put Darius. But seriously, the big defensive centers, Damp and Tag, who is better? and by how much?

BE OBJECTIVE.

Whoops misread it (thought it said Brad Miller or Dampier) and the answer is obviously Dampier... He does everything better, and is more athletic...

Better player, or better player for the role the Kings need him in? If it's a contract year, you got to go with Damp hands down for the first one;)

You think Dampier does Everything better than Miller!??!
On a consistant basis?
This year? Two years ago? three years ago?

I'll grant you that he is worlds more athletic. But Damp is also a lazy turd, at least when he isn't in a contract situation. He is the classic definition of an under-achiever. He is basically a 7-foot tall Billy Owens.

Across his career, you could also easily say that Tag has been an under-achiever as well. He'd play great one in three games, and then basically disappear the other two.

Thats why I put up those two to be compared, Damp v Tag. the under achievers race

I think that Dampier is a little better, but considering the value for money that they offer, I think that O'tag is better.

Ostertag is, IMHO, much better FOR US. He has come in and done exactly what we hoped he would do. On the other hand, the much vaunted Dampier has been a major disappointment in Dallas, to the point where Don Nelson is now wondering what to do with/about him.

Tag knows his role, which is an asset. He isn't trying to move up in weight class, so to speak. He has said repeatedly that he knows why he's here and he only wants to do his job. With Greg Ostertag, what you see is what you get. If it's not what you're looking for, move on.

With Dampier, it all depends on the year. If it's a contract year, for some strange reason he seems to step up and play at a high level. Then, for some inexplicable reason, his performance drops back off UNTIL the next contract year.

So, being completely objective, I'm going to go with the guy who brings it exactly as advertised.

Dampier is a much better all around player but I would certainly agree with VF21 in saying that Otag is a better fit for us. He comes in and plays solid on defense and rebounding every game. He is the exact opposite of the rest of the players on the team and is a huge asset.

I don't know why everbody dumps on Damp, he's a good player. He's only averaging 26 min a game and still pulls down 7 boards and scores 8 points. Don Nelson needs to stick with a lineup and not play a 12 man rotation every game, kinda the opposite problem the Kings have, he plays too many guys.

Another interesting stat note, Brad Miller averages nearly 10 min. more a game then Dampier and pulls down only 1 more board a game.

If you look at their stats for the past few years (except Damp's last year) they put up similar stats. Edge to Damp though getting more playing time.

No no no, you misread my statement... Brad Miller is WAY better than Damp... That's not even close... But I had to edit my post because I replied as if the question was Miller or Damp... I'm saying, Damp is better than Ostertag, no way is he better than Miller in any way...

No contest. Dampier in a landslide. Dampier is Kurt Thomas-ish, and Ostertag is a bigger version of Eric Montross.

tag is the better value, and better fit for the kings.

damp is overpaid and only did good in his contract year. i'm not all that surprised he's been such a disappointment so far this year.

Is this thread actualy comparing our back up center to the Mavs starter? Don't think iwill encourage the madness...

Actually, that was the entire point.

The mavs went after, and got, the hot commodity. They got the center of the moment, "THE BIG GUY" of this past off season.

Woot woot! good for them.

THe kings, on the other hand went out and got the ugly step-sister center. The much maligned and diminished in the press guy.

Boo on them, settling for trash :(

But its my opinion that in the final analysis these two guys really are not that differnt. They are both defensive/revounding oriented lugs that you bring in to bang around in the paint, and cause trouble. However, they are both inconsistant.

Other than the fact that Damp looks better doing his job (he is more athletic, and "graceful"), are these two guys REALLY all that different from each other in terms of what they bring to the table on a night-to-night basis?

not really. One just costs 10mil a year vs 2mil a year
(are those #s vaugly correct?)

Which of the two is proving to be the better bargain? Which of the two is better meeting the needs and expectations of the team he's now playing for?

:D

Dampier vs. Ostertag

Dampier is better all around I think, But I think Ostertag has yet to fully show what he can do with the Kings. Every player that comes to this system eventually becomes a better offensive player. Damp started out hot but he's been a little less efective lately. But Ostertag is a backup, Dampier is a starter so it's not really a good comparison. Miller is about 10 times better than Dampier, Dampier is a bout 2 times better than Tag right now.

I'd have to favor Dampier as well, but with the contract values and expectations factored in, OTag might get the better of the argument. No one would expect him to show up on a team, log 30 to 35 minutes per night, and be a stabilizing force in the middle. Yet that is exactly what has been expected of Dampier in Dallas, and despite his shortcomings to this point in the season, I'd wager that as much of his problems are Nelson not knowing how to use a true center that doesn't have a very good midrange game as much as Dampier not being able to perform his listed job functions.
