"Nuggets Eyeing Wells" (merged)

#1
From Rocky Mountain News:

"Warkentien and Karl will discuss team business while in Las Vegas this week for a camp led by Nuggets assistant Tim Grgurich. The Nuggets continue to have interest in free agent guard Bonzi Wells, but it's unclear if he would consider a one-year, low-dollar deal to showcase his skills."

Thoughts?

My thought is if Wells agent can't come up with anything better than a 1 year deal with denver for less than the MLE. Bonzi is going to fire him soon. Phillips has screwed Bonzi to the point where if he gets 3 years at the MLE he would be lucky. Bonzi isn't going to take a chance on a 1 year deal and run the risk of getting injured and never getting anymore money after this year. If he does however take the deal for 1 year. Well i don't want Bonzi on my team anyway because he would be an idiot to take that.

Not sure Bonzi needs to further "showcase his skills", sounds like a euphamism for "we don't have any money but want you, would you take a paycut to play for us for one year"? I suggested last week that a one year contract, preferably with us, may be he best way out of this situation...for Bonzi, at least.

A one year deal with a Loyds of London type insurance policy to cover any long term injuries suffered during the year seems the only way out for Bonzi.

If his value is so low right now, why not resign him with a decent contract for both sides? It would really give us a strong bench and a lot of flexibility for future moves.

we tried to resign him for 5 years. It was also over the MLE which is higher than any contract any other team can offer him. He wouldn't sign that. I don't know what you mean by a decent contract but, more than any other team can offer is decent to me. he should have signed.

I think more interesting is an article Spurs throw in for Bonzi

http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_18276.shtml

"On Friday we learned that the Spurs have thrown their hat in the race to sign the only remaining big-name free agent: Bonzi Wells. The Spurs know better than any other team what Bonzi's value is, as he was the reason some pundits began predicting a first-round loss for the Spurs. Bonzi was nothing short of a Spurs killer in the first round, averaging 23.2 points, shooting 61% from the field and grabbing 12 rebounds per game.

The Spurs are not the front-runners for Wells, but they are now officially on the radar. The question now becomes whether Wells would rather play with his buddy Jermaine O'Neal in Indiana, as was originally planned, or play for a title in San Antonio, Miami, or Detroit.

The Kings are open to a sign-and-trade, meaning the Spurs could unload some of their redundant talent. Brent Barry's name has been mentioned in almost every trade rumor involving the Spurs, but more recently Oberto and Beno Udrih have been on the table in discussions, as well.

One thing's for sure - the Spurs haven't yet made the deal that makes them better than division rival Dallas. The Mavericks have made some nice upgrades, locked Jason Terry in for the foreseeable future, and had a solid draft. They have not been content to stand pat. There is no question they have improved. It may be that Bonzi Wells is the only way left for the Spurs to keep pace with their Texas Triangle rivals. "

I was just wondering what you guys think of this i would love for us to do a s&t for Beno and Oberto for Bonzi. We could do this and still be under the threshold, considering Oberto makes 2.5 next year (player option the next), and Beno will make < 1 with a team option for 07/08 and possibly could be with us 3 yrs.

"one-year, low-dollar deal to showcase his skills"

If this goes down its bullshart. I would be very suprised if Bonzi felt like he need to showcase his skills, wasn't that what this year was about? (minus the low-dollar part)

PS Bonzi, don't come back to the Kings, we don't love you, your dead to me.

thats harsh KFOTM... this is probably his last large contract so hes trying to get the most he can. i don't blame the guy for trying to get the max he can get.

Ridiculous. If Bonzi was going to sign on the cheap why wouldn't he sign with a contender like Miami, Detroit or another team??? Not the friggin' Nuggets.

Bonzi is so good (for six games that matter), you build your system around him. Oh yeah I forget, the Nuggets won't be in the playoffs, so screw that idea. Bonzi and KT for Camby and he's yours!

If this doesn't indicate there's not a line of people waiting to grab Bonzi in a high dollar sign and trade, I don't know what does. I wonder if the Nuggets are one of the six teams William Phillips has been touting as the ones still interested.

Isn't Bonzi asthmatic?
Yeah, he is and has never done really good playing in Denver with the altitude. I wouldn't mind signing him to a 1 year deal and then to a reasonable contract off the bench after that for 3 years or so. I don't think that Bonzi knew the ramifications of not signing with us and trusted too much in his agent who lost his hand in poker to stone eyed Petrie. Geoff wasn't bluffing and Philips thought he was and had more wiggle room than he had. I would love to have Bonzi back even if we do sign him for 1 more year. We love him here, and I think can get over the fact that he was looking for the $, this is his last contract.

Come home Bonzi....Come home, retire a King. :)

Bonzi would strengthen our bench immensely and heck, he could come in at PF if we still have KT and haven't fixed that problem. We are a tweener team so what the heck. He did what our big guys didn't do in the playoffs and took it to the Spurs. You got to love this guy, him and Artest are dyyyynoooommmmiiiiitttteee!!! :)

Other than him being a good wing-player... how does he fit for the Nuggs? He's not a reliable jumpshooter at all. He can hit some here and there, but jumpers aren't a main part of his game.

The Nuggets still have no outside shooting. Haven't had one proven/reliable/quality shooter since Lenard in 03-04.

Then you got JR Smith possibly getting pouty and complainty again about PT and oppurtunities.

That Spurs rumor has already been posted and discussed a few days ago, and it's likely bogus because it's hoopsworld.

We can still use Bonzi if he is willing to come off the bench (not be guaranteed a starting 2 job). I know we just got Salmon's, but he is not going to waste by not playing him at the 2, he can play 1 & 3 as well. If anything I think Garcia might be the odd man out if we do try to get a package together to free us of KT's contract. Hopefully we can work out a S&T, and if not and Bonzi is still around maybe he'll realize he still belongs here and will sign a 1 year contract for cheap and then we can work on getting him signed longer after this year if he is willing to come off the bench. He doesn't shoot well, so that really takes away from him being a true SG, but he brings a lot of intangibles to the game and is a great rebounder and scrappy banger. This type is good, but your body takes a beating and with his age, that's all he can give us, he cannot fall back on a good shoot if his mobility becomes limited with age and being hurt. I guess we'll just have to see. Let's not hold our breathe though like we did before this whole thing went South, maybe it can migrate North again. :D

Yes he is AND it has been widely reported in the past that he has trouble playing well in Denver due to the elevation. I suspect that if Bonzi has to take the LLE for a year to "show case his tallents" he would pick a team in a dry low elevation town with a high profile and deep play off run written all over it. San Antonio would be a good choice... Denver makes little sense.

If we could somehow get Camby, it would very much help our shotblocking and rebounding problem.
