Now that the Kings have 5-7 Small Forwards... now what???

Now the Kings have five to seven small forwards...

1. John Salmons
2. James Johnson
3. Tyler Honeycutt
4. Francisco Garcia
5. Travis Outlaw

potentially:
6. Tyreke Evans
7. Thomas Robinson

That is more than half the roster... so now what? I am thinking it is time to make a trade... or sign an additional small forward!

The best part is, they all shoot around 30% from the 3... as long as Jason and Demarcus can get two offensive rebounds per posession, the Kings are ready for action.

No minutes for Garcia, Honeycutt and Salmons. 3 guards rotation (Reke, IT, Thornton from the bench), Johnson and Outlaw at SF. Something like this

Thomas
Evans
Johnson
Thompson
Cousins

Thornton
Outlaw
Robinson
Hayes

Limited minutes for Jimmer, at least until he shows some improvements and that he can stay on the floor.

I'd also bring T-Will back, but only if we are able to trade someone among Outlaw, Salmons and Garcia.

It means Smart can have at least 5 (5!) small forwards on the court at one time without being accused of small ball, what with average heights at play.

I think T-Will is out barring a trade where the Kings give up a lot just to unload bench SFs... maybe something like Honeycutt + Salmons for Jose Calderon??

Well, we obviously need to make more moves. This also kind of cancels out the idea of TRob at SF. So, we have Cuz/TRob/JT as our top three bigs, and our current 4th big is being paid 5M next year. That's a lot for a 4th big who can't do much besides defend some PF's when the matchups work out, and even then he really hurts us on the offensive end.

Then we have our SF's. JJ I think is a good deal. We didn't get a star prospect, but we don't need a star at SF. We got a young, defensive prospect at that position who's already proven at the NBA level he can be a damn good defender is spurts. I'm not sure of the pecking order with our current SF's. But I'd say JJ is first, and Outlaw is second. I sy Outlaw is second a Salmons was pretty much relegated to backup guard duty last year. But either way, I'd say Salmons and Cisco are numbers 3 and 4 in the pecking order of our SF rotation. Problem is, they make more than anyone on the roster aside from MT. Paying our 3rd and 4th SF's a combined 13-14M is an incredibly stupid way to allocate our money. Combine that with Chucks, contract, and our 3rd and 4th SF, plus our 4th big, are making a combined 19M next year.

So yes, we need to cut that fat. I've long maintained that our problem isn't so much spending, but rather we waste a lot of what we do spend.

I think you have a 3 pt contest before each game with Johnson, Outlaw and Salmons to see which two plays each night!!!

Honestly no one is going to trade for Hayes or Salmons unless they are packaged with a premuim player? Hayes/Thorton or Salmons/Reke for a 14 mil starter quality ? Other wise we are gonna be stuck with Hayes/Salmons for several years until they are an ender?

Maybe start Salmons to show how great he is doing to maybe trade in Feb?

maybe outlaw is tradeable due to low salary - backup SF for a backup "creative" Point Guard? Call up raptors again for Calderon

At this point, if the Kings can trade Jimmer as an "asset" with Salmons or Outlaw or Garcia for a decent player... do it. Jimmer's value is dropping fast, but there is still some value there. Better than waiting for him to develop only to let him sign elsewhere (namely Croatia) as a UFA

Thornton is like the one guy on this team besides DMC thats a bonified starter. why is he on the bench?

If it were up to me I'd start Reke - Thornton - Johnson - Thompson or Robinson - Cousins. With Isaiah in the 6th man role. I really don't think that is how the Kings look at it though. I have a hard time seeing Thomas not starting next season .. benching Evans would be dumb, so it appears Thornton is the obvious odd man out (or odd man benched).

Exactly. That's what I think too, and if it was for me I'd use IT like we used Beno 2 seasons ago, but it's not what I believe Smart will do.

I don't see it as odd man benched. I see it as an opportunity to come in the game as the #1 scorer. He would get nearly the same amount of minutes but he wont be on the court with IT, Reke and Cousins as much. Basically he'll get more shot opportunities.

I hate IT and Thornton starting together. That's horrific starting defense from your guards. I don't want our team to play like the Warriors even though I have a feeling that's what Smart will do.

Teams that excel at zone defense are going to love playing against us. Just simply pack the paint and watch what happens until MT or Outlaw comes in. We literally have no shooters (other than IT) that can hit a shot outside of 10 feet, especially when we'll need Cousins and T-Rob inside to grab the eventual miss.

I'm quite confident that Evans range will extend up to the free throw line, kind of like Wade. That's my prediction. 10 feet is a little bit of an exaggeration.

Don't know what you're talking about my friend. We didn't GAIN any small forwards...we lost Greene, and picked up James Johnson. It's still alot of small forwards, but it's the same amount we had last season. Small forward by committee.

What do you mean so now what?

We actually only have 4 SFs (Johnson, Outlaw, Garcia and Honeycutt). Out of those 4, Honeycutt will probably get garbage time minutes and Garcia might even be used as a guard. T-Rob is an undersized PF and might see some action as SF, but that is not even guaranteed more than T-rob playing center under coach Smart.

It was Petrie and the coaches (Westphal and Smart) mistake for not seeing that Salmons and Evans are not SFs.

We have a ton of SF's, too bad none of them shoots the spot up 3, and none of them are great defenders(which is what we need from the position). We also have alot of gaurds (Tyreke, Isaiah, Jimmer, Thornton, Brooks) too bad all of them are score first, pass second players, and all but Tyreke(when he tries) are bad defenders. At least our front court has some sort of balance, but we don't have a shotblocker. And no Whiteside wasn't going to be that player(the guy is clueless out there).

Listening to Petrie's interview, it looks like there will be a trade to balance the roster. That's something we absolutely have to do, because we cannot go into the season with this kind of roster, at least if we don't want to see a 3 guard lineup again.

And you believe Petrie?

What are you, a member of Petrie Cult?......j/k of course.:p

Didn't he say we need a shooter and a shot-blocker too?

Then, after the draft and three "major" signings we still can't see those kind of players. And now it looks like Whiteside is gone too.

So, what is it really?

Well, he also said there was going to be roster moves in the next days, and it was true. I'm not saying he will make a good trade, but I'm pretty sure something has to happen.

I'm just trying to be positive, maybe he'll surprise us with a big move landing Iggy or someone like him. Yes, I know, it will never happen. One can only dream...
