Nocioni to the celtics rumor

Looks like this might happen!!!

One of the most intriguing deals discussed on deadline day has to be Andres Nocioni winding up with the defending champs.

It's unclear, as the final half-hour before the trade buzzer ticks away, which team actually halted these discussions. We've heard conflicting claims from both teams on who withdrew first.

Yet we do have agreement that the Celtics and Kings talked seriously Thursday about sending Nocioni to the Celts, which seemingly would have been a huge coup for Boston given the hole created by James Posey's departure in the offseason. Nocioni is a rugged, versatile, two-position forward who does a lot of the same stuff.

The deal likely would have required Boston to part with at least four players from its oft-criticized bench: Glen Davis, Brian Scalabrine, Patrick O'Bryant and the injured Tony Allen. Sacramento can only move Nocioni on his own after acquiring him only Wednesday in the Brad Miller/John Salmons deal with Chicago, since players can't be packaged in subsequent deals until 60 days have passed after being traded.

It would figure that the length and cost of Nocioni's contract are what gave the Celtics pause, since Nocioni has three guaranteed years worth more than $20 million left on his deal after this season. That's more money in the same span than Posey will earn from the Hornets, who were able to sign Posey because the Celtics deemed a four-year guaranteed contract too rich to match.

But it must have been tough for the Celts to resist -- if they indeed balked first -- because Nocioni could have filled such a big need.

Sounds like it might NOT happen to me. The article reads that the talks have halted.

Unfortunately that article makes it sound like they are dead, not alive.

Come on Boston -- you are playing for the title! Put up or shut up!

i would be pumped if we pulled off the kenny thomas to NY trade and the Nocioni to boston trade. It would make taking on Jeffries not as bad if we could move Nocioni. However K9s expiring next year will be a huge trade chip that may be worth holding on to. 15 mins....doubt anything will happen.

Yeah, if by some miracle we pulled off both moves before the deadline this whole thing would be a considerable success. An unprecedented turnvoer, but young players and enders all over the place, and a fresh start.

Amick:

If I didn't make it clear enough before, it really sounds as if quite a few teams are calling about Nocioni. You've got to wonder if the Kings don't get an offer they can't refuse in the next little while. There's nothing concrete to report, although the rumblings about a Boston offer are widespread.
Meanwhile, the Boston Globe is reporting the Kings there has been a Kings-Celtics deal, just not one that's nearly as significant. They have reportedly agreed to a trade for Patrick O'Bryant. I need to confirm the move and his salary ($1.6 million for next season according to Hoopshype.com).

For what??

why would we take on another player at this point, doesnt that mean we have to waive someone?? Is this going to be another sam cassell move?? with the celtics again??? wtf???

I think we keep him. He has an extra year on his contract and actually has some potential. If anything we waive a more useless player.

I assume the O'Bryant deal kills any chacne to shed Noc's contract. Sounds like we jsut took him off their hands to help their cap room, and I guess after all the moves we must have had just enoguh space open up to do it.

And yeah, we'll probably waive Booth. No big deal. He's old, O'Bryant is young. Have wanted to see what O'Bryant has for several years now ever since Golden State nabbed him in the lottery. Kind of had/have hopes maybe he can be like a late breaking Pryzbilla figure (Pryx sucked and bounced around before blossoming late as a rebounder/shtoblocker). Would rather have moved the Noc contract, but at least we got one of the two interesting playhers that might have been offered for him anyway(Allen was the other).

DING DING DING DING!!!! It's all over unless something was on the table and the NBA league office has granted an extension.

Time's up, but there's still a chance that deals pending approval have yet to be announced. According to Amick, Nocioni was drawing a lot of interest, so I'm holding my breath.

Hollinger:

Brenton (Boston, MA): Are the C's getting Nocioni, and who are they giving up.

SportsNation John Hollinger: (3:06 PM ET ) Apparently not. Deal would have been Allen, Scalabrine, Giddens and O'Bryant (Big Baby might also have been in it). It was about salary neutral for 2009 so Kings didn't feel any urgency to do it -- if Nocioni plays well they might get better offers in summer or next year to unload that contract.

Smack Petrie's head, not your own. That's where the problem begins and ends. Just no good at the salary management portion of the game at all.

This was a brief, brief window when Nocioni suddenly didn't look so crappy because we wanted him, so people think, "Hey, here's a veteran guy who might help us off the bench."

Now we have a whole rest of the season for everyone to remember how crappy he is, and since he will have been crappy in two places, he'll be untradeable.

If there were opportunities to move Nocioni for expirings or close to expirings and Petrie didn't take it because he likes what he sees in Nocioni, he really has lost it.

Yes, salary would be neutral in 2009...but what about 2010 and 2011?!!

I think it's more likely Boston balked because of his contract. I can't imagine given all of the other cost cutting moves at the deadline that suddenly we would have kept a contract. Even if Petrie liked him, I have to imagine the Maloofs would have bludgeoned him with a blunt object and then signed off on the trade themselves.

I think you are rather too down on Noc. He's not that crappy. Can actually be good some nights, and could certainly have given the Celtics bench a considerable lift. Just never as good as his contract.

Hmmm...reminds me of a player we re-signed this off season....

True, but Noc is actually scrappy and plays with a lot of heart. Leads to some stupid fouls and forced shots, but he should actually be a good influence on our young players. Kind of like Artest's first season with us when his heart and swagger were infectious for KMart and Garcia.

Just got home from school. I refuse to believe that we turned this trade down, I refuse it and I don't care what anyone says. If it's true then I fear my brain will simply shut down.

Well to be fair Geoff is a genius, and therefore will need at LEAST two years to properly "evaluate" Noc before he can consider doing anything. Remember the true mark of all true genius is to be slow and pedantic, lack insight, fail to plan, and fail to seize opportunity.

LOL!:D

Beautiful.

Since everyone is so negative here

I personally guarantee that Nocioni outplays our expectations just like Salmons did. First of all, he'll be given Salmons' minutes. If you like at their per minute stats they are very similar with John having more points and assists and Nocioni having more rebounds. So he should naturally see a boost all around with more minutes. Secondly, he'll get the same stat inflation that Salmons has gotten for playing on a crappy team. Salmons won't play nearly as well for Chicago as he did here because overall they are a better team with a few better scoring and playmaking options.
