Nice article on Westphal: David Aldridge

Then you want me to post odds? This isn't Vegas. How about less than 10% of the time can a win total increase of 10+ games be attributed to only one person. And I'm not talking about putting a team over the hump, I'm talking jumping 5-7 or so teams record-wise which is the gist of this thread.

I think the problem here is that you are only looking at how many wins Westphal can help bring to the Kings. You also have to look at how many wins the coaching staff from last season cost the Kings. If the Kings had good coaching last season, I think they would have won at least 10-15 more games. So saying that Westphal can bring 10 more wins to the Kings is more a reflection on last year's coaching than on him bringing some magical formula to the situation.

Excellent point, Telemachus. With this reasoning, I can absolutely see 10 wins being attributable to coaching alone. And that's not even a stretch.

And yes, many factors could help us win even more.

I disagree that we aren't more talented then we were at the start of last year... all the young guys are better players than when they were at the beginning of last year (ok, not for sure yet, but who thinks they wont improve?) and now we have Noc and Tyreke... not to mention Omri, Brockman, Sean May, Sergio Rodriguez and perhaps Desmond Mason... I would much rather have all those guys than Brad Miller and John Salmons.

Don't get my wrong, I in NO way am saying I thought the roster at the start of last year is better than what we currently have. I would much rather have the energy, hustle, and desire you see out of guys like like Nocioni, Omri, Brockman, Mason, etc. And I think this team is already gelling better than last year.

But from a pure talent perspective, the only real upgrade in my opinion is the addition of Tyreke. And as promising as he is, he hasn't played a game yet, so I'm holding off judgement about what type of impact he'll have and how well he'll work out with the rest of the team. Who among the new bigs actually is a more talented player than Brad. And the way Salmons was playing, we haven't really upgraded there with Omri, Mason, or Noc from a talent perspective either. On paper, the team we had last year shouldn't have been that bad, but we all know it's not about that. If these new players accept their roles, and work hard, you'll have a better result. If they give the same type of effort we saw last year, this team has actually gotten worse. Getting this team playing together and putting out that kind of effort goes back to the whole topic of this thread ... coaching.

(On a side note, I find it kind of ironic that Salmons is considered a ballhog who just took everyone out of the offense with his 1-on-1 play. However, everyone loves how Tyreke can "beat anyone off the dribble and get to the basket".) To me, until Tyreke shows that he can distribute the ball, they are the same player, except Salmons proved he could shoot last year.

Having the ability to beat people off the dribble is in no way a downside. Salmons was a problem not because he had that skill, but because he insisted on pounding the ball for the majority of the shotclock before doing anything, whether it was taking his own shot or not. That doesn't make any player with the ability to drive another Salmons.

Ditto!! It wasn't Salmons ability to drive to the basket that was the problem. As you said, it was his frustrating habit of dribbling the ball for 20 seconds of the shot clock before deciding what he was going to do. Artest had the same problem. They both drove me nuts.

Westphal is at least an average coach. Maybe a good coach. Regardless, I just pray that we can keep him for longer than a season - or half the season. This team needs consistency and stability at the coaching position. You can't have a coaching turnover frenzy without engendering cynicism and a me-first attitude in the players. I sure hope three years from now the guy is still our coach. I hope we all can give him the benefit of the doubt.

The Coach plays a big part in motivating his team. The way the team plays depends on how they respond to the coaching. I've seen games last season where the team just seemed to slump and give up.

I will second that, with the disclaimer, that he still be here for all the right reasons. But your right, the team needs constistancy and stability. This revolving door with coaches has to stop.:)
