To be fair, A LOT went wrong with Dallas in that game. From the 900 penalty yards to the 5 sacks and 7 QB pressures, to the ridiculous 20 yard run up the middle with 16 seconds on the clock which effectively ended the game. If Shanahan hadn't made the dumb decision not to go for it on 4th and 1 with a 6 point lead, 3 minutes on the clock, and Dallas holding 3 TOS and then another dumb decision to call a timeout and put Trent Williams in motion for no reason on a 4th and inches QB sneak to seal the game which Jimmy would have had easily I might be a little salty about the Niners getting overlooked for playing well. We got lucky. Dallas was one big play away from knocking us out of the playoffs and we would only have ourselves to blame for prying the door open for them.
I think what people tend to do is take the decisions he makes that don't work out or aren't perfect and file them in an ever growing file full of all the reasons why they think he's not a good coach. Then the decisions he makes that work out great get filed away in a file labeled "Decisions any average coach would make". In the end you wind up with a bunch of reasons why he's not very good, while not giving him the credit he deserves for the good decisions.
He has a QB who struggles to throw the ball further than 20 yards and can't throw it to the sidelines. He has a small box in the middle of the field he's able to work in. Shanahan routinely crafts long, time consuming drives that wear out the defense and play to the strengths of his players. He started putting Deebo in the backfield and it has paid dividends. Mitchell is a hell of a RB but there's no way he takes that run to the house on Sunday. He's made nearly every back he's had look somewhere between good to elite in his time here. When Shanahan is coaching and the Niners have an adequate QB, they win much more than they lose.
Both teams tried to lose the game in the second half and luckily Dallas was just dumber than we were. Lots of bad decisions were made but I'm not going to call out Shanahan on things like Williams not getting set by time the snap was made. That was on Jimmy. His offense is all about deception and that created enough deception to get the first down, if not for the flag. Remember, I believe it was an end around to Deebo to even get them in that position? Most coaches in that situation just run the ball up the middle and play it safe (or throw it if they have a better QB). Kyle made an excellent call that got them within an inch of a first down and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a single person that would have predicted that.
I'm just saying that the grass isn't always greener. We may not have Belichek on our hands but we have a coach that you don't want to let go of because they don't come around at his level very often.
The critiques that people have of Shanahan are largely the same as the ones Andy Reid got before he happened to draft the best QB of his generation and finally won a super bowl. I’m not saying the same thing is happening here but finally winning a ring probably changes it all for him.People convinced themselves of this when Harbaugh left and look at all the nonsense we had to deal for those 3-4 years until we found Shanny. It can get HELL of a lot worse. Look at the Kings when they thought they could improve on Adelman; still a decision haunting the team 17 years later.
There's maybe like 3 teams in the NFL that wouldn't trade their coach for Shanny. Just watch any game with bottom feeder, vanilla coaches and you quickly realize how amazing it is to have the creativity of Shanny in this offense. And just imagine if Lance gets unlocked next year with his mobility and ability to stretch the field; all of sudden the run game creativity gets that much more dangerous.

Mike Tomlin says he wants his next QB to be mobile. That takes Jim off the Steelers’ list. Lol

I think Shanahan is in the top tier of coaches in the NFL and what he and Lynch have been able to do with drafting and developing later picks is phenomenal. I don't blame Shanahan entirely for the team's 4th Q struggles. In that Dallas game injuries to key defensive personnel were a big part of why Dallas started to get some momentum back and that pick thrown by Jimmy was oh so predictable and negated the drive where we could have put the game away for good. The play calling in general has been very good and the running game combined with short passes to hit receivers in motion is an offensive strategy that is very hard for other teams to disrupt. Deebo and Kittle are All-Pro type skill players and it seems like every RB, offensive lineman, and linebacker who comes in the door has been decent to great under Shanahan and Lynch's leadership. And we're looking at now having multiple defensive coordinators poached for head coaching jobs elsewhere.
I don't dispute any of that. The only thing I don't like about this current iteration of the Niners is their frustrating tendency to play tight or ultra conservative when they have a big lead and allow teams to nickel and dime their way back into the game in the fourth quarter. It's been an issue for several years and I don't think that all falls on Jimmy G. We get a big lead and we start predictably running the ball on every play or going for big strikes down the field instead of the 10 yard or 5 yard catch and runs which built us the lead in the first place. If Shanahan ever manages to figure that out he'll be unstoppable.
All in all though, I can't complain. We've seen how bad things can be from a coaching and GM standpoint so I'm more than happy with Shanahan and Lynch and I hope they hit the jackpot with Trey Lance and he ends up being the key piece to fully unlock the Shanahan playbook.

Bigtime - Jim is one of the slowest QBs in the NFL.
Big Ben though not fast, can throw with guys hangin' off him, not Ken-dollCompared to Ben he’s Mike Vick though. Maybe Tomlin is just used to Big Ben speed.![]()

Big Ben couldn't even throw the ball ten yards down the field with a clean pocket. Jimmy G was Mahomes compared to him this year.Could he still do that this year?
Rewatched the regular season 49ers Packers game WK3 and the NFC Championship game 2 seasons earlier - a few thing stuck out to me -
1 - of course the defense is not quite as good as the 2020 SB runner up team but not too far off. They did not get adequate pressure on Rodgers in Wk 3 - the defensive line did only average by their current standard of play. In the NFC Championship game they forced a fumble and Rodgers erred a strange bad snap give-away.
2 Fans may forget how blistering Mostert's pace is - he has a top gear none of the current 49er RBs have - Absolutely blew out the Packers in NFC Championship game. This was one of the key parts of whooping the Packers in NFC Title game, that the 49ers won't have on Saturday
3 Week 3 game this year Jimmy G had 2 turnovers - 1 INT that didn't matter as much but a big fumble in the 4th quarter which gave the Packers a FG. and ultimately the wiggle room to win.
4 Sermon was ok at RB week 3 but not as good as Mitchell; I suspect they can have a better day running the ball but Mostert will be missed.
Mitchell should be able to fill in somewhat for Mostert but without the homerun ability. The 49ers will have to play better offensively than solid game in Dallas. Everyone knows though, that means no interceptions or fumbles from Garrapolo which is probably asking too much. The injuries from last week may adversely affect the game too. I'm not expecting a win, but I neither did I against the Cowboys.
I forgot how close that game was. Gives me a little more hope for this weekend.
Deebo is doing some of the carrying and while he doesn't have the ability to run between the tackles like Mostert does, he seems to have even better home run skills when he gets a bit of daylight. I think we'll be alright in that department. What worries me is Rodgers vs. anyone in the secondary not named Moseley and Williams.

Ambry Thomas’ ascension continues Saturday night!!!!
Even more so than against Dallas, beating Green Bay is all about the pass rush. If our d-line can disrupt Rogers the same way they disrupted Prescott, I think we've got a pretty good chance. Every time the Niners beat the Packers it's because Rogers is too busy protecting the ball to look up field and throw his receivers open. If he has time to throw back there, he'll pick us apart. And I don't think anything else matters. Fortunately, we have a pretty good pass rush. We're going to need them to be on fire for the whole game.
Well if the offense has an exceptional day it might make up for a poor pass-rush, and that was kind of the case for week 3, except for Garrapolo 2 turnovers which really hurt their evaluation.
