I'm sorry for his family and those who depend on him for a living. I suspect this will be very hard for him to overcome. And I think it should be. He made a choice - and now he, just like any other drunk driver - should have to face the consequences.

I'm sorry, Mel. I've liked you for a long time but this is just a little too much. Just like Tom Cruise jumping up and down on Oprah's sofa, some things just go too far.

Obviously idiotic and irresponsible behavior, but I'll give him a small amount of credit for admitting it and apologizing to everyone, especially the deputies involved. At least he didn't try to lie or spin it.

worse yet, according to this article http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movies/08/01/gibson.dui/index.html he had been pulled over twice recently before this last incident for reckless driving without being cited. i don't really buy into his apologies, it's pretty transparent that they are nothing more than an attempt at damage control at this point. apparently a project he was to work on has already been canceled. my, how the great have fallen.

At least he is admitting it and is willing to do whatever it takes to repair his relationship with the Jewish community. It doesn't change the fact that he said those things, but at least he's not denying it like a lot of celebrities would do.

MG already had a pretty shaky relationship with the Jewish community. I think his anti-Semitism is pretty transparent. I too believe the apology is insincere damage control. Will have to see what his actions are. Maybe a huge donation to the Holocaust Museum and an anti-drunk-driving group like MADD.

Mel is the richest actor on the planet, and has already shifted gears into directing and producing. Besides, if Roman Polanski can still direct (and win Oscars) I am pretty sure that Mel Gibson can. He even finances his own films.
