Newark Star Ledger: Petrie wants Porter

#1
But Maloofs won't listen. This was grabbed from the RealGM wiretap, and is on the front page:

"[FONT=Arial,sans-serif][FONT=arial,sans-serif] Once again, GEOFF PETRIE is showing good sense in pushing hard for TERRY PORTER to take over in Sacramento, and once again, the goofball owners who ruined the team a year ago -- by forcing out RICK ADELMAN and hiring ERIC MUSSELMANN despite Petrie's objections -- are not listening to their GM. Typical. We don't expect the Maloofs to know this, because they're usually too busy hanging around the gold-plated hot tubs of Vegas filming softcore-porn reality TV shows, when they aren't holding up their taxpayers to build a $450 million arena. But Porter did a great job in Milwaukee, making the playoffs his first year, turning MICHAEL REDD into a star, then getting dumped after an absurd string of injuries (notably, T.J. FORD'S spinal surgery) and the turmoil of having eight free agents on his roster dropped him to 30-52 in his second. He is going to be a great -- not good -- head coach someday."

Interesting- why does this not seem to be what we're hearing at the moment????

I don't think the Newark Star Ledger has an inside track on what the mummy wants or thinks. And I'm not really too impressed with any rumor that has to include a snide dig at the Maloofs as part of its rationale.

Basically another Op-Ed piece. I'm not too impressed with the source, considering it's Jersey. The way it's written screams rumor mill.

I found the link -- tacked into the bottom of a column about SVG.

So as you can imagine he may have just come up with that while sitting on the throne this morning reading the Times. :p

I do think that if Porter gets an interview, that he just might beat out Brooks. But with no word of an interview, and Brooks scheduled tomorrow...maybe we might hear something after that, if it was to happen, anyways.

I hope they interview as many as it takes to find the right fit for the Kings.
That is until all the top tier candidates are gone because they were busy interviewing.

J/K - there was only one top-tier candidate and the Rockets got him a while back. The Kings probably should take their time with the remaining group of candidates.

Actually, its high time to get a coach for aa number of reasons. This taking your time bit is just a sign of yet more disarray. Nobody needs 3 months to find a coach. And the draft and FA and some big decisions are right around the corner. You would very much like to have a guy in in time to at least consult on that. Hell, ideally you might like him to be at some of the workouts and whatnot. You certianly are going to have a hard time convincing a free agent to sign with you when you don't even have a coach. This needs ot get done here in the next couple of weeks at the far outside.

This 'columnist' didn't even bother to check the spelling on Musselman's name.

I think we can safely say this article is crud.

Although somewhat unrelated, I hope Terry Porter gets the job.

Looks like someone on the Homeland Security's "no fly" list. I won't even comment on the "soft porn" remark.

While I can see why some of you guys are having a hard time believing this I find this to be pretty true. Listening to Sports 1140 here and there it seems as though the Maloofs are having a lot more say then they were going to have when this first started. I think Terry could come in and do a great job here. I think as long as he is willing to help with a rebuilding process that in 3 or 4 years this team could be competing for a title again. However, with that said I think Scotty will probably end up with the Job.

I completely agree and to be honest this is getting to be more frightening than frustrating. Do the Kings have an idea? Do they have a plan? This seems to be a repeat of last offseason. IMO it is essential to not just have a coach in place to implement his system, but needs to be a big factor in what player moves are made. The draft is just over two weeks away and I doubt the canidates have spent much time scouting.

In regards to the article, I normally wouldn't think that something like this would have substance but the fact that the Kings have taken this long and haven't even interviewed Porter leads me to believe that the Maloofs have a hand in this. I mean they've interviewed just about everyone else, I can't believe that Brian Shaw would be more attractive than Terry Porter, it makes no sense.

I'm going to take a wild but calculated guess and say that we'll have a coach by this time next week. I think that if Porter is to be interviewed, we'll be hearing about it in the next 2 days...if he IS brought in, I think that he's the guy. If we dont hear anything in the next few days, I think Brooks is the guy.

This thing with Porter is a worry IMHO. There is just too much smoke around for there not to be any fire.

Too many different sites have reported that GP wants Porter but Maloofs are putting the brakes on it. Sure some will dismiss it as unsubstianted dribble but the chances of it being true and not are 50-50.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least that Maloofs are running the show again. It looks like GP and Maloofs wanted SVG, it didn't work out so the feeling I get is Maloofs are now having a greater input into who shoudl coach us. I just wish they would leave these things to Petrie.

I just hope that Porter is at least interviewed. If he is not, then there would be something stinky about the situation.

I'm not buying into this. I've said it before but here it goes again: If Petrie is involved in anything, you will not know about it until he announces it. So, these are just rumors. Maybe I missed it, but just when did Petrie say he was interested in Porter? And who really knows how much involvement the Maloofs have this year? All owners are involved to some extent in hiring the coach--they said they were going to leave it up to Geoff this year--who actually heard them say or do anything different? I'm not saying they have not had more input than usual, but no one knows, and I'm not going to get involved in rumors. I think we are all ready to be introduced to the new coach soon. Annie.

I'm not sure of that actually -- in fact Brooks suddenly getting a second interview looks much more to me like the Maloofs throwing up their hands after losing SVG and succumbing to Geoff's pet project on a sure why not sort of level.

I completely agree, since Brooks doesn't seem to have ANY of the hallmarks of what could be considered a "Maloof" hire...

I may be totally off base, but I think it is possible Porter took himself out of the running inadvertantly. I seem to recall him making a statement about expecting to get interviewed and Petrie when questioned about it stating something like 'it was news to him.' I have to wonder if Porter has had a tendency to talk too much or too freely with the media.

Then again, probably pure speculation from left field.
