New Perspective on Kings Trade

i think the kings are a better overall team with this trade... the kings have definitely gotten much deeper with this trade... sure these guys they traded for are not all-stars, but they have been very good, solid role players in their careers... and i think that may be just what the doctor ordered for the slumping kings...

since the christie trade, the kings have not had a solid, hard nosed ROLE PLAYER in the starting mix... with 5 all-stars in the starting mix, the kings had no one to do the dirty work and spark the team like christie used to... everyone of the starting 5 needed to score to be effective and they became STAGNANT AND COMPLACENT... and now with webb gone, the kings will probably insert SONGAILA into the starting mix...and he can be our solid, hard nosed ROLE PLAYER in the starting 5... i think this will help the kings overall, because he has shown hustle and heart and does not need to score to be effective... with webb's 21 ppg and 10 reb gone, the kings will realize they can not just step on the court and outscore every opponent, they need to play harder on defense and rebounding...

every great team has a hard nosed ROLE PLAYER in the starting mix... san antonio has bruce bowen... detroit has ben wallace... the lakers had derek fisher and rick fox.... someone starting that did the dirty work... omething the kings haven't had since christie was traded...

and the kings got much deeper with the trade...all 3 players acquired have been solid, productive players in the nba... just the type of players adelman likes to use...kenny thomas averaged a double-double last year (13.6pts and 10.1 reb)... corliss williamson is a former 6th man of the year (career 11.8 pts and 4.1 reb)... and brian skinner is a solid banger and defensive presence (10.5pts, 7.3 reb, and 1.1 blks last year)

to be honest, matt barnes was a scrapper, but we all know that come playoff time adelman would have reduced his minutes to zero because of his inexperience... bradley only got on the court due to injury... but the players that the kings got in the trade are more experienced and have been productive in the league... just the type of reserve players adelman likes to use... with the trade, the kings are two deep at every postition, once bobby gets back for the playoffs...

i think the kings will start to move the ball more and get everyone involved better... i think the players will all step up their defense and rebounding, because they can't depend on offensive talent alone anymore... i think that songaila will prove to be a solid, if not spectacular starter... and the added depth will allow the starters to rest more for the playoffs... i believe the kings are still a championship caliber team!!!

GO KINGS!!!

I'd feel better about it If our PG who has to run the offense now agreed with you...

Eh...I'm pretty sure the Kings themselves would not agree with you, but your enthusiasm is amusing. Speech had a nice baptist minister feel to it -- Do you believe? Let me hear you now -- DO YOU BEEELIIEEEVE??? :p

Here's the hole to your theory -- general theory is that you need a dirty work guy is fine, but these guys aren't it. Skinner kind of has that about him, but in our system I would say the odds are stacked very much against him. And Thomas/Corliss really AREN'T especially dirty work players. They'll try hard, which will be welcome, but they aren't disruptive defensive types so much as just undersized solid scorers -- starter lites rather than roleplayers. And finally, biggest thing is that dirty work guys ARE great, but you still need balance, and you still need a goto guy. We have no balance right now, and a very short time to figure out a new goto guy. Just too much disruption + turnover, and too little of the things you need to really make a run at a title.

the hard nosed role player in the starting 5 i was referring to is Songaila... the new players we acquired helps our depth, but i don't expect then to necessarily start... there is still plenty of time for the team to gel... there is still 2 month to go... 4 out of the starting 5 are the same, but you need to intergrate songaila into the mix, something that happened often last year when webb was injured....

Bibby will get over his disappointment... i wouldn't worry about him...he is a professional and will step up his play accordingly...

role players needed???

Hey, c'mon, do we really need more role players? Isn't that what we've been trying out the last 2 years, fit one in here, another one there, try 'em out and them dump 'em. Jim Jackson, Hedo, Scott, Keon, plus the Massenburg-types, too many to count, who were simply placeholders while we waited for - what? Peja to become "playful" again? Bibby to take control? Miller to turn into Shaq? Or, are we waiting for Coach to take control?

A sorry state of affairs. I truly hope I have to eat my words, and don't have to go to Vegas to see my team play.

I just have the thought in the back of my head that Terry Porter gave Petrie a great recommendation for Skinner as an effort guy that can fit into the Kings systems as a PF or C for backup minutes to give Brad and Darius / KThomas a break every now and again. Since he can't shoot, I'm sure he sets really good picks, and I'd guess he is probably no less than twice as athletic as Brad and CWebb at this point, which has to be a welcome sight for Kings' fans/coaches.

Sure, his contract had something to do with it as well. I just think that Skinner has just as good a chance as the other two guys of becoming the biggest prize over the remainder of this season for the Kings. If he can earn Adelman's trust, he can add things for the Kings on the defensive side of the ball that they didn't have before this trade.

I like Skinner in a thug sort of way -- if I were coach I would definitely play him. But I'm not. And realistically, we have turned far far away from any low skill thug type players. Really '02 was the last year when we gave one (Pollard) consistent minutes. And now we seem positively allergic to them. So I have real doubts whether Skinner will get PT over guys who can shoot (that seems to be the first thing we look for ). (Actually Skinner DOES have one face up jumper from one face on the floor, but there is no douobt Thomas and Darius are steadier shooters).

Thing is he also has a silly contract and now a bum knee, so that doesn't help either.

I certainly don't expect Skinner to get starter's minutes at Darius' expense. I'm hoping he can squeeze some of KThomas' minutes at the backup PF, and also fill in for Brad against the undersized second units most other teams field.

I do agree with your assessment of his offensive limitations compared with KThomas and Corliss. I'm still a huge believer in playing Corliss at the backup SF so he can take his guy in the low block, but he isn't attempting to guard the other team's hyper-athletic 6-7 guy that starts at SF.
