New NBDL team in Albuquerque.... Maloofs?

David Stern announced recently that there will be 5 new, privately owned NBDL teams, all in bigger market cities than the original teams. Teams will join the league in Albuquerque (N.M.), Austin (Texas), Fort Worth (Texas), Little Rock (Ark.) and Tulsa (Okla.).

Albuquerque is the original core of the Maloofs business, and yesterday Gavin said "We all love sports. It's what we want to do." If that is the case and the new CBA allows players to be signed then assigned to an NBDL team, we could see a number of the summer league players show up on the Albuquerque team.

Mark Berman in the Roanoke Time wrote about the NBDL and David Stern:
"With NBA affiliations, demoted NBA players, 18-year-olds and more teams coming to the NBDL, Stern is finally getting the true minor league he always wanted — a minor league he feels NBA teams will now pay more attention to."

How fun could that be for us fans as well as the players on the "bubble".

Here in Sacramento we have the River Cats, a minor-league (but very professional and enjoyable) baseball team affiliated with the Oakland A's. It is a great system for players to hone their skills and try to make themselves big-league material - I am very interested in how this plays out in the NBA.

Little different though. Seems to be a different balance in the NBA. Maybe its just development curves or whatever, but in baseball just about everyone comes through the minors. Future stars included. Takes time for even the great ones to be ready to play in the majors. But in basketball, that's probably never going to be true in most cases. Might get a few 18yr olds stashed down there. But most really good players are able to at least be contributing by 19 or 20 at the latest. So might never be the same exciting dynamic as there is in baseball watching the next star of the game work his way up through the minors to your team. Have to figure if the guy is going to be great, he'll be on the roster pretty quick and the NBDL will be mostly lesser players that can make a roster but aren't going to tear up the league.

We'll see though Who knows, always possible teams might put a talented kid down there to get some minutes (would have been nice for us with Wallace).

You are correct, but I think we'll see more kids get the opportunity to prove themselves than you do now. Maybe some that couldn't get into a decent college for some reason or another. More younger players will get PT (Wallace, Martin, Daniels, etc). It will be good for the game and good for the fans in these cities.

Injuries have killed the Kings in the last 2 years and we have had no bench players to fill in. The NBDL would allow us to have several "bigs" honing their skills, and some decent bench players at every position ready to step up. In the past, you either had your bench or traded (not a Petrie thing) or sucked air as the Kings did without Brad and Bobby.

I think in the beginning two NBA teams will share in a Team unless the Maloofs owned the Albuquerque franchise in which case it would be Kings players or nada. It will take time but I think it has all the right stuff: Stern's NBA marketing to mid-size cities, teams developing their own players and a better brand of minor league ball than we have had in the past. I'm all for it.

Actually the Clippers AND the Rockets played here. Plus at least 5 other semi pro teams. We have a 12,000 seat arena that is being remodeled right now and would be perfect.

They're completely different markets though, that's part of the problem. Although the Sacramento Area is rapidly expanding.

Do baseball and football generate more money? Is that why Sac can't get the funding? If so, I can understand that. Its ironic though how before last season, the chargers and padres were awful, and now they both have new/semi new stadiums. (qualcomm). Ironically too, both played much better in new stadiums. Hint hint maloofs.

I meant population of the city. San Diego has all of So Cal to draw from.

It seems that most stadiums/arenas these days are corporate sponsored. Why don't the Kings go after a big sponsor or try to get he ARCO corporation to fork over more money?

true about the population, but the kings should have most of the northern california market, i don't see the warriors taking much of that. Still amazes me how bandwagon san diego fans can be. I've been to pads and chargers games with absolutely no one there, but i kind of like it that way. keeps ticket prices down for myself.

Especially when the Padres played at the Q also. I've been there on nights when there were only about 9000 in attendance and it looked empty.

i only eat "nathan's" hot dogs. tried one and i vowed to never eat another kind. but i do remember those nights, somewhat, i believe beer was cheaper then, so i drank more.
