Westphal just said about last second shot in pre-game (Dallas) interview with the G-Man that he looked down and saw Kobe WAS NOT out of bounds and that Kings certainly knew play was for him. They had D they wanted but what happened is history (implying it was an offensive foul on Sergio) but now they forget it to concentrate on tonight game.
I certainly hope that wasn't the defense Wesphal had wanted for the play that decided the game! I also think that he should have at least acted as if Kobes foot was out of bounds. Hell, Phil Jackson would have, and gone spastic pointing and shouting - no doubt getting the OOB call!
I've only been a Kings fan since I moved to Roseville, about 10 year. Over the years I've come to regard NBA games more as athletic performances than competitions. Even the tv announcers talk of stars "getting calls". You don't hear star MLB pitchers "getting strikes". The NBA is a business and they present what they think customers want to see. Probably the only way things will change is if viewership goes way down and fans demand to see impartial officiating. But I'm not holding my breath.

Ever hear of Umpire Eric Gregg? I don't want to make fun of the dead but he regularly let the top pitchers get 4-6 inches more of the plate. Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux(Got a full 6 inches when he was on) Cleamons, etc... Barry Bonds got a smaller strike zone as did many great players.
Every team sport has top players that get special treatment. Football, Baseball, basketball, Hockey, Motorsports... You name it.

You can create all the rules you want, but it is human nature to give the benefit of the doubt to everyone that you know to be a star player. If you are not sure what you saw in a bang-bang (fast paced) play, you will assume it was the star who played better and you will give him the call.

I don't agree. Referee's work is to call what they see and be completely unbiased, no matter who is playing: they should only care about who is a player only when informing the table about a foul. If a referee is not sure about what he has seen, he musn't call anything.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think I've seen enough NBA star-treatement by the referees in the last years to think that is not always benefit of the doubt, it's clearly and simple that referees are biased. As I also see a lot of FIBA games I know a more fair refeering is not an utopia, in fact is very possible.
I have no real experience, but in youth basketball it is tough to even notice who is committing the foul. I just saw bodies moving. After I saw a hand reach in or a body over the back, I called a foul and THEN looked to see who it was that committed it.
I guess if Shaq were playing with my sons team, I would have noticed.
