Postgame Quotes-vs. Utah 11/15/05

Kings Coach Rick Adelman
“Obviously, (the Jazz) were really short-handed, but we did what we had to do. In the second half we moved the ball really aggressive offensively. We played a solid game, except that one part in the second quarter. I was pleased with the way we approached the game in what we had to do because the other team was short-handed.”

”We needed a win, I don’t know how bad. If we wouldn’t have gotten it, I don’t know how bad it would’ve been, but we definitely needed a win. We saw Mike (Bibby) come out and make shots. We had a good flow going offensively. I know they (the Jazz) were playing four games in five nights, but you still have to go out and you have to do the job you’re supposed to do, and we did that.”

On the bench play:
”It was all one-on-one. They played together and then they broke down the defensive end. Sooner or later, you’re going to have to go out and you’re going to have to do the job. I told them in the fourth quarter to go out and play like they play in practice. You play together at both ends of the court, you can’t relax…if they think that they (can) score, everything is good – but that’s not what’s going to do it.”

“I just told them today that it means nothing if you don’t play well over the weekend. We have three tough games – Milwaukee is a good team, they’re on the road – it’s going to be their third game on the road. You have to add Seattle and San Antonio. Just because you won this game, nothing has been proven. We just have to come out and get some work done in the next few days at practice and get ready for that game on Friday.”

”It’s just the way it is – there’s always overreaction, but they have to look at it to understand that people are going to overreact. You’ve got to keep more of an appeal, but you have to go out with a different attitude when you’re playing Friday. They’ve been through this twice now; we played after the Phoenix game and then we played a very good team in Detroit who took it to us. After the Denver game we didn’t come out and play like we needed to against New York. Even though you can talk about everyone overreacting, the simple fact is that they haven’t been backing it up game after game, and that’s what we have to do if we’re going to become a decent team.”

“We needed this game real bad. We came out aggressive tonight. We passed and moved the ball around. We shared the ball and that’s the way we play. My plan is to get a little bit more aggressive. I’m pushing the ball more, and I made my shots. We feel good with ourselves. We feel we did a good job and there’s nothing more we can ask for. We played hard.”

“We knew this was a game we had to have. Utah was a little banged up, but I still think it was more about us than anything they were doing. We’re going to take this win, and carry it into other games. We haven’t been coming out with the same focus, same aggression, and same intensity. We have guys that learn and that have been on good teams and we understood the situation and our sense of urgency tonight. Hopefully we can just carry it over into the next game on Friday. We were more focused. I don’t think we felt good about our effort and the way we approached the game the other night against New York.”

“Utah’s a good team. They didn’t have all their guys, but that’s beside the point. We still came out aggressive. We kind of slacked off in the second quarter, but we turned it on in the second half. We were being aggressive on both ends – offensively and defensively. Every minute I get, I’m trying to play hard and I know my teammates are going to do the same. We play 82 games; we don’t have a choice but to get over a win or a loss – you’ve got to move on to the next game.”

UTAH JAZZ

Utah Jazz Head Coach Jerry Sloan:
“We had a really tough time trying to understand what they were trying to do to us defensively. I told our players before the game where they would try to make their defensive switches, and it was almost the end of the ballgame before we realized how to do it. Everybody seemed overwhelmed with how they played, and we didn’t have any energy to try and compete against them. They just executed their offense very well, which is something that they have always done whenever we have played them. They end up getting what they want, and we make the defensive mistakes that lead to their easy baskets. Their second group came in and competed, they took their starters out, and they knew they could come right back on us, because they felt confident enough to do that.”

Deron Williams:
“He’s (Bibby) is a tough player. He is always moving and they set a lot of screens for him that you just have to fight to get through. It’s not just a one-man assignment; you need to get help from all directions. In this league you go up against someone like that every night. I have the same approach every night. You have to go at them because you know they are going to give it right back to you. They just run their stuff--a lot of back screens a lot of movement, they are tough to guard.”

Greg Ostertag
“The big thing for us, because we are so young, is that we have to continue to execute our offense. If you watched tonight you saw that sometimes we got away from that. We were going out of the offense on our own, and we ended up shooting a lot of tough jump shots. When we settle we just fall apart. When we execute and get the shots we want then it’s just a matter of knocking down the shots. I just try to tell them to execute the offense, and do the things that you are asked to do, and the offense will work for us. It’s going to be a tough road but as long as we continue to get better and work hard we will be fine. I was happy with our effort for the most part, but like I said, there were some times when we got away from what were trying to do and it showed.”
