Postgame Quotes-vs San Antonio 11/21/05

Kings Coach Rick Adelman
“It’s a tough loss. It just took us forever to seem to get any rhythm at all, and they didn’t get that group in the fourth quarter. (San Antonio) came out and battled, they went after us, they went after loose balls, they just kept chipping away, and suddenly we got the momentum going. Like I told them after the game, that’s what it’s going to take for our team – the way we came out in the Milwaukee game and then we played hard last night – but we got it going too late tonight against a very good team. We had our shot but we couldn’t get over the hump.”

“One of the problems we have with our team is that we don’t really have a lot of people to break people down. We went to Francisco (Garcia) a little bit because he has reliability. We let him have the ball with Mike (Bibby) coming out to screen. We just kind of changed it up to see if that was going to make a difference and I think it made a difference. Sometimes, in games like this, you find out a little bit more about your team – things that you can do a little bit better. We were so out of sync in that first half. The second quarter we tried to play Corliss (Williamson) as the small forward and we haven’t played that much with those three guys and that makes it difficult at both ends of the court. It’s going to be a process and I told the guys we have to come back against New Jersey and build on what we did in the fourth quarter here. We have to turn this around. I saw some good signs in that fourth quarter the way we competed.”

“When I heard Peja (Stojakovic) wasn’t going to play, my first choice was Francisco (Garcia). He’s played extremely well in practice and he’s a young player that we see a lot of potential for, but unfortunately early in the year he hurt his ankle, and he had short minutes – he’s kind of been forced. I talked to him before the game and told him to just play the way (he does) in practice, play the way (he) can play against a pretty good player.”

“We made a good comeback. The guys that were in at the end brought us back in the game and did a good job. We started playing together and got the stops that we needed on defense. We started off with the pick and roll and my shot was feeling pretty good. We have to put this loss behind us. We felt good about how we came back and how we played last night. Coach gave us the day off tomorrow, and we got to get these next three games at home.”

“We were playing a little bit better, but we’re just not winning right now. It’s definitely more encouraging than what it was in the first week. But we’re still losing, so we can’t be too happy about that. We got to keep fighting and get this going the right way. I think we’re on the right path, we just got to execute down the stretch and finish those games off. Sometimes after a back-to-back we’ll come out a little slow. They just really jumped on us early and they were getting a lot of easy shots and making them.”

“My shot wasn’t feeling good, so I wasn’t going to force anything. Mike was shooting the ball well, and it’s just the way it goes sometimes. I don’t give a rats about scoring, so it’s not a problem for me.”

On being fatigued on court:
“Everybody’s got some injuries going on. You got to bang and it’s going to happen, but you just have to keep on fighting through it and you can’t let it affect your game. You just got to go out there and keep playing.”

“They showed the confidence in me to get me some shots and we started playing our game. Yeah, I was a little surprised to get the start tonight. Coach talked to me before the game and just told me to play my game and that’s what I did. Coach has been saying to take it to the basket and I was just trying to do different things on the floor to help the team. I had my mind on the game and I was ready to play tonight.”

SAN ANTONIO SPURS

Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich:
“I think in the fourth quarter Sacramento played with a lot more aggressiveness, and they played a lot sharper then we did. I thought that our perimeter play got really sloppy, and lackadaisical at both ends of the court. The Kings as group took advantage of that. I thought in the fourth quarter we played very poorly focus wise, we mad a lot of bad decisions, and they were able to get themselves back into the game. I put Horry in towards the end because I felt that we needed to get someone into the game that could compliment Tim, and get us another opportunity to maybe get another possession. Horry understands what we are doing defensively very well. He did a great job I think he got a couple of key rebounds, and did a real good job.”

Manu Ginobili:
“Bibby had a chance to hit that last chance. He was playing very well, and making a lot of shots in the fourth quarter, with those last second shots anything can happen. I think we should have not arrived at that point, where they could have tied the game, but were lucky. In the fourth quarter we just stopped playing. We stopped playing defense, we stopped moving the ball offensively. They stepped up and were way more aggressive, than the first three quarters. We were turning the ball over and just not hitting our open shots, and not playing aggressive enough. I really struggled and did not have a good game, I took a couple of bad shots and turned the ball over, but a win is a win."

Tim Duncan:
“Towards the end we helped them out by making a few bad turnovers, and Mike Bibby got hot and hit a couple of shots. We got some great finishing shots by Horry, he played well for us and he helped us to find a way to win. Our defense at this pint is a work in progress, we still have a ways to go and have a couple of things to learn. We are still missing some assignments; we are still not rotating to the right spots. We are working through stuff but we are very happy to be 9-2. We are headed in the right direction, the rest of the season is all about getting better. Tonight we played okay and we were lucky to be able to hold them off.”

I liked that move last night, and I'm glad to see that RA recognized that as a viable option. Nice to see Bibby as the SG for a change. Can't do that all the time, but it was nice to take the ball-handling pressure off of him and allow him to get some shots up...especially without Peja.
