I don't care how much anybody gives as long as people help in any ways that they can. The needs are so huge. Everything helps, no matter how small. The BBall game is a great idea. If it inspires even one person to give who normally would not, it wil be a success.
And people like you, chelle, are my heroes. I've been watching the news for glimpses of Baton Rouge. It's obvious you and your fellow Baton Rougians (??) have opened your hearts and your homes. Bless you!

If you're ever in California and want to see a lot of trees, we'll talk!!!

:D

VF, while I appreciate your comments, a hero I am not. I have been humbled by the outpouring of support from people everywhere. As for seeing a bunch of trees in California, when make it up that way, you're on! I'll even bring the donuts!!

UPDATE:

Marc Berman had Kenny on Fox26 last night, and Kenny confirmed that the league and TNT have given the all-star charity game their blessings, and that it will be televised on TNT. I believe they said this will be announced in the afternoon today (either 3pm Central or 3pm Eastern, not sure). Soon after, tickets will go on sale.

Some more players that will be coming that I didn't mention earlier: Amare Stoudemire and Kevin Garnett. Moreover, according to Smith, over 30 players league-wide have made a commitment already. It'll be interesting to see who ends up playing.

when is the game gonna be? i can't wait to watch it.

i love how the players are getting involved even during their offseason, getting ready for the upcoming season. and i loved how some of the players gave a thousand dollars for every point they made in some games after the tsunami.

Thanks, T[MaC] - I'm willing to bet Kenny got a lot more players who would be willing to play if there was room for them. I know what I'm going to be watching AND TAPING that night.

I fail to see why this makes a difference. Charity is charity; you give what you feel comfortable giving, if you are inclined to give anything in the first place (many are not). And saying that one man should feel an obligation, in any sense, to give more than the man standing next to him, just because he makes more money, is patently unfair. To say that someone hasn't given enough shows no appreciation for the fact that he gave anything at all... "Moral obligation" is a null expression; wealthy people don't "owe" the less fortunate anything.

... Anyways, what Smith is doing is thoughtful. One problem though, its on the opening day of football, who is gonna watch it?
I find this to be fallacious reasoning, because:

1) You assume that everybody likes football.
2) You assume that everybody who likes basketball also likes football.
3) You appear to be assuming that this was done as a some sort of counter-programming initiative; perhaps Smith and the others involved wanted this to happen as soon as possible, and this was the earliest/latest that it could be scheduled.

How do you know that he didn't ask? What makes you so sure that the reason there are no Kings scheduled to appear is because they weren't invited?

Also, please edit your post; it's distorting the screen.

Your right Slim I don't know whether he asked any Kings

But as the Promoter of the Event, I am guessing he would have called mostly big name stars, and/or players he knows on a one-on-one basis.

But maybe rephrase:

Gee Kenny , couldn't you convince any Kings to come to the party?

Speaking on assuming, you seem to do it quite well. First, I'm not speaking about the non-sports viewing general public. I'm talking about sports fans who may watch the game. Over 120 million people watch football each week during the regular season. Of the top-40 sports telecasts since January 1961, all but six telecasts were Super Bowls. I would assume that majority of people who like basketball also like football. And I'm probably right. I don't assume this was done as some sort of counter-programming initiative, I was just stating that ratings aka more charity money, could be higher if it weren't to be played on September 11th, the anniversary of the falling of the Twin Towers and the start of the football season<<<<which is also bad timing. In my opinion, too many things are happening on that day for this game to be truly productive.

It breaks my heart to see people arguing over this.

Hello? Let's keep a little focus. This event is a fundraiser to generate money to help people who have lost their homes, their loved ones, everything in life they cherished, etc.

What difference could it possibly make if any Kings actually play in the game or not? I'm sure, if possible, a whole TON of NBA players would be on the court. Unfortunately, it would be a mob scene. So, I'm sure Kenny has been telling more than one player "thanks, but we just don't have room"... (My point is that I don't think we can make any assumptions about intentions based on the players that actually step onto the court. It's not fair IMHO.)

It's not a contest between football and basketball. It's not a contest between remembering the victims of Sept. 11 and trying to help the survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

Instead of working so hard to find something about this effort to criticize, why not be glad it's being done in the first place?

I'm willing to bet everything I own the survivors of Katrina aren't going to be asking why such and such player wasn't there AND I'm pretty sure no one who lost a loved one on Sept. 11 is going to be upset the benefit game is on the 4th anniversary of the event.

Americans are able to focus on more than one thing at a time. If you look at the TIME of the game broadcast, it's going to be shown at 10 PM - well after the football games are over.

Can't we just think about how lucky we are to live in a country that is able to even begin to pull itself together after a tragedy of this magnitude instead of finding ways to knock the various efforts being made?

VF21- I was simply stating that the game maybe could have been played on a different date, not criticizing the game itself. When my comment was questioned by Slim, I gave my reasons.

I think everyone here can agree the charity game is for a just cause and is necessary.

Personally, I'm glad no King's players are in the game, you never know when that injury will come, so the less exhibition games they play the better.;)

Just keep in mind ... just cuz they're aren't any King's signed-up to play, doesn't mean a thing.

Speaking for myself ... I like doing MANY/CERTAIN things annonymously .... I don't need the world to know everything I do and don't do.

There are many people who choose do things in "their own way".

One of the many things my parents had us kids do from time-to-time is to do something nice for somebody else WITHOUT telling them. An act I am teaching my kids ....

I really think this is great Kenny/NBA are doing this, not only for the charity, but to see a game loaded with talent, stars and fun.

I just do not get it. Why in the world are we arguing about the time of the game, who is playing, how much they are giving, who is giving it and why? I honestly do not understand.
What I DO understand is that an untold number of people have died and many more have lost EVERYTHING they have. I am just as grateful for the person who gives 1 dollar as I am the person who gives 1 million. When there is NOTHING there, every cent helps. Obviously, I have not been to New Orleans or the surrounding parishes since the storm, but I can tell you that what we are seeing on TV does not even portray one ounce of what it is really like. When I hear a little girl ask her father, "Daddy, are we homeless now?" and he looks at her, KNOWING the answer is yes, but is unable to tell his little girl that awful truth, I become so aware of how much the smallest thing can help.
I have nothing but praise for what Kenny Smith is doing. The game could be played at midnight Christmas Eve and I waould still be thankful. I lost nothing, but this has changed me in a way I never dreamed possible.
If every "King Killer" who ever touched a basketball played in the game and Phil Jackson coached one side and his clone coached the other, I would cheer for them just as loudly as I have for any player wearing purple and black.
I also believe that it is not my place to judge who has given what. We have no idea what has been given in private. We will never know. If we all gave something (ANY thing); it would help scratch the surface of the seemingly insurmountable obstacles facing these people.

I am sorry. I did not mean to "preach." I must also say that I have seen more acts of selflessness and generosity from people all over the country than I have ever witnessed before. I know that the news has focused on what was not done, but I have seen with my own eyes what HAS been done by ordinary people. Most of you who visit this board have done your share.
Can we look at the good IS being done instead of being critical of those who are trying to help- like Kenny Smith?
Again, sorry about the preaching.

Sanityannex is more violent and flailing with his swings, but Slim probably has more accuracy, but less firepower behind each blow. In the end, Sanityannex tires out with his haymakers that don't connect. Slim wins on jabs to the side. TKO.
