2009-10 Power Rankings: Training Camp

By Marc Stein
ESPN.com

Editor's note: "Last Week" and "Record" categories are from the final Power Rankings of the 2008-09 regular season.

1 (1) Lakers 65-17 The prospect of Artest's clicking with Kobe, Pau, Lamar and Bynum? Frightening. But be honest: Wouldn't you rate the champs as far bigger favorites to repeat had they just hung on to the steadier Ariza?

2 (4) Magic 59-23 Since '89, only one team that lost in the Finals won it all the following year: last season's Lakers. So I respect/applaud Orlando's overhaul/big spending, even though I always saw Hedo as the Magic's linchpin.

3 (3) Celtics 62-20 We could wax poetic about Boston's handy free-agent pickups (Sheed and Marquis Daniels) and the Celts' willingness to keep spending to retain Big Baby. But we, like you, need to see KG run on those knees first.

4 (2) Cavaliers 66-16 The team that was humbled by Orlando added four useful players, headlined by a chap named Shaquille O'Neal. But wouldn't it be easier, if they want to make sure LeBron stays, just to move to Akron?

5 (8) Spurs 54-28 The Spurs are right there with the Celts. Huge props for taking on Jefferson's contract and adding McDyess, Ratliff and DeJuan Blair … but disclaimers abound 'til we see Timmy and Manu healthy at the finish.

6 (6) Nuggets 54-28 I'd be less concerned here about the ability of Afflalo to replace Dahntay Jones or the effect of Kleiza's departure on Denver's depth than the mere challenge of living up to last season's everything-went-right script.

7 (10) Mavericks 50-32 Had the Mavs landed Gortat in restricted free agency, they'd be our clear-cut No. 3 in the West going into camps. We still say they've upgraded sufficiently, starting with Matrix Marion, to slot in right under the Nuggets.

8 (5) Trail Blazers 54-28 Question: Why do the Blazers dip slightly after losing none of their main contributors and adding Andre Miller? Answer: Denver still merits higher placement in the West's pecking order, and Dallas had a better summer.

9 (12) Hawks 47-35 The Hawks are going to be better. They haven't improved enough to worry the elites, but keeping Bibby, Pachulia and Marvin Williams and adding Jamal Crawford and Joe Smith seals them as No. 4 in the East.

10 (16) Suns 46-36 Will not miss the playoffs again. Not with Alvin Gentry coaching from the start and not if the main protagonists stay healthy. That's as far as we can go, though. Amare's future is the real story of the Suns' season.

11 (9) Hornets 49-33 Everyone wants to know whether Chris Paul is happy in New Orleans. Would you be, if you were CP3, given that George Shinn's big move this summer was swapping Chandler for Okafor … before giving Butler away?

12 (13) Jazz 48-34 This season can't be as chaotic as the last, when Utah had all those free agents-to-be and countless injuries. But the lingering uncertainty about Boozer's future and the lack of new blood are sufficiently disconcerting.

13 (11) Bulls 41-41 With D-Rose no longer a rook, Deng back from injury, and Brad Miller and Salmons in training camp, Chicago will weather Ben Gordon's departure. Especially since the Bulls are a likely 2010 free-agent player, too.

14 (20) Raptors 33-49 For sheer volume of transaction activity, Toronto was the NBA's place to be in the summer of 2009. We now resume our regular programming and revert to obsessing about where Bosh will be playing a year from now.

15 (27) Wizards 19-63 Even as a longtime Flip Saunders fan, I have to temper my optimism here. The Arenas/Butler/Jamison core had a limited ceiling even at its youthful and healthy best. It's a playoff team again, but that's as far as we go.

16 (14) Heat 43-39 With all significant biz on hold until next summer, when Miami prays it can re-sign D-Wade, just matching last season's trip to the playoffs puts a big onus on Beasley and on O'Neal's knees. Hence the rampant skepticism.

17 (17) 76ers 41-41 The Sixers have a decent young core (fronted by Thaddeus Young and Lou Williams) no one talks about and found a shooter in Kapono, but let's face it: Eddie Jordan's first season in Philly hinges on Brand's return.

18 (15) Pistons 39-43 Ben Wallace is back in Motown, but there isn't much more to remind you of the Dee-troit Basketball we've come to expect this century … unless Gordon and Villanueva do more damage than anyone expects.

19 (19) Bobcats 35-47 Can Larry Brown grind out six or so more wins and finally steer the Bobs into the playoffs with a couple of notable newcomers (Chandler and Flip Murray) but still no franchise player? It's possible, but not probable.

20 (29) Clippers 19-63 Griffin's injury scare can't change the facts. Blake G. in, Zach Randolph out and Rasual Butler for free? That, folks, is a sweet summer that (almost) makes you dream of a Lakers vs. Clippers first-round showdown.

21 (28) Thunder 23-59 Am I allowed to keep saying, even though I get their thinking, that I wish the Thunder had drafted Rubio? What about saying, high as I am on OKC's future like everyone else, that playoff talk is still a tad premature?

22 (7) Rockets 53-29 The Rockets have been so scrappy without Yao or T-Mac (or both) that you hesitate to dismiss them in the race for No. 8. Dismissing them is not nearly as foolish (on both sides) as the Ariza-Lakers divorce, but risky.

23 (22) Warriors 29-53 Monta, Curry, Captain Jack, A-Randolph and Biedrins form a must-watch fivesome. Not ready to pick them for the playoffs or anything, but the Dubs have depth, too. They could be dangerous … not just to themselves.

24 (18) Pacers 36-46 Granger sees the Pacers as a ''top-6 team'' in the East. Don't think Danny and I are looking at the same conference, unless Dunleavy Jr. comes all the way back and Hibbert and Hansbrough are way ahead of schedule.

25 (21) Nets 34-48 Nets fans will live with every single bad "Nyets" joke if their prospective Russian owner has anywhere near the effect Roman Abramovich had at Chelsea. Don't forget, though, that the NBA does have a salary cap.

26 (25) Knicks 32-50 As if the Knicks' wait for July 2010 wasn't excruciating enough, they needed until this week's signings of D-Lee and Nate Rob just to get something out of this summer. And they still must trade Curry or Jeffries.

27 (26) Timberwolves 24-58 There wasn't a newsier team in the offseason than the Wolves. That obviously won't be the case once the season starts, but at least they've got some personality again with Kahn, Rambis, Big Al and K-Love.

28 (23) Grizzlies 24-58 Have we ever been able to call the Grizz "riveting" in this space? Can't see them winning 30 games, but I can tell you this: I'll be watching them. Gay, Mayo, Thabeet and Gasol + Iverson and Randolph = irresistible.

29 (24) Bucks 34-48 Luxury-tax issues led to the departures of RJ, Villanueva and Sessions. Only reasons to tune in now: Redd and Bogut are on the comeback trail, and Brandon Jennings' NBA journey starts out under Skiles.

30 (30) Kings 17-65 The consensus worst team didn't draft our beloved Rubio. But the Kings did draft our beloved Casspi, which leads to this teaser: Will there be more wins or Omri mentions in 24 weeks of regular-season rankings?

Boy, not too deep after 10. I still have more faith in Houston than some of those above them because they still play committed D every night, which will help you scrape by w/ little talent. They could be the best example of that since the slow-death Fratello Cavs. They put me in the sh**ty position of having to give props to Adelman again.

Countdown to Washington's first major injury...

Pistons should finally sink like a stone.

Suns will not miss the playoffs again and the reason is because they'll be coached from the start by Alvin Gentry? Ok...

Lol at calling GS must watch. Lol at calling Memphis irresistible. I could understand if he were falling in love with names on paper with SA, but not those two teams.

The Clipps are gonna get smeared by The Times on the first day of the season against the backdrop of the ring and banner ceremony. Blake or not, that's just rubbing it in, Mr. Stern.

Guy needs to let go of Rubio, he played a practical joke on the league, not just Minny.

Kingsfolk, I don't think Sac is 30 if not for another desperate chase for Lins. It's not possible to be worse than Milwaukee without trying very hard, imo.

His placement of SA was solid. Most are treating Dice like he's actually young and RJ like he's a superstar.

Stein is all over the place in the article; sometimes he uses "I", sometimes he uses the "editorial we", sometimes he uses both in the same blurb (#15), and a few times he whips out the "editorial you".

He does use "I" to show his man-love for Rubio in the Thunder's blurb. I'm pretty sure it's just the "editorial we".

Marc Stein lost any potential credibility i may have given him. He thinks the Rockets, Twolves, Bucks, Pistons will be better. He also seems to think that somehow waiting for Rubio for 2 years would have benefited the Kings more than starting Evans next year. That makes no sense.

Why wouldn't those teams be better than Sacramento this year? The Rockets took the Lakers to the wire in round 1, the T-Wolves have a great big man, the Bucks may suck as well but they have more proven pieces than Sacramento, and you can't ever discount the Pistons. It's a safe bet to say that those teams will be better than Sacto this year.

I was a Rubio guy, but I've become willing to see what Evans can do...as it regards everything else, I see nothing wrong with Stein's argument.

The Rockets have lost Yao for the season, and traded Artest for Ariza, which is probably a downgrade on-court, possibly a large one. They've lost the #2, #4, and #5 (Von Wafer) scorers from that playoff run and have a big hole in the frontcourt with the untested David Andersen as their only player over 6'9". McGrady can't be counted on to be healthy. Battier's a good defender and glue guy, and Brooks can score, but after that it's the all-even-more-complementary team of Ariza, Scola, Landry, Hayes...and it falls off from there. The Rockets will not be good this year.

the T-Wolves have a great big man
Jefferson is coming off of offseason knee surgery. That's a question mark. Love has broken his hand and will miss a month+. They traded away Mike Miller and Randy Foye to pick up a 2-3 years deferred draft selection, and their big free agent signing, Ramon Sessions, plays the same position as their big draft pick (Flynn). I think Gomes will be fine, but outside of him, the injured Jefferson/Love, and Sessions everybody on their roster is either untested (Ellington, Flynn, Pecherov), has been tested and hasn't done well (Brewer), or is nothing special. I certainly hope we're better than the T'Wolves this year.

the Bucks may suck as well but they have more proven pieces than Sacramento
The Bucks' proven pieces are pretty much Michael Redd and Andrew Bogut (and Bogut isn't that special). Warrick is proven only against the Kings, and Ridnour has proven he's not very good. There are hopes for Jennings, but it's his rookie year and he's probably not going to set the world on fire this year. Alexander may end up being a bust, and Mbah a Moute is a nice defensive/hustle player but is not a team focus guy by any means. There's just not much to like there.

and you can't ever discount the Pistons
It's hard to know what to expect from the Pistons this year as they have fiddled around a lot. Stuckey, Hamilton, and Gordon in the backcourt and Prince at the 3 is pretty solid. The frontcourt is a bit less so, with presumably Kwame and Villanueva starting and Wilcox, Maxiell, and a washed-up Big Ben backing them up. I don't think they're a playoff team, but they could sneak in.

It's a safe bet to say that those teams will be better than Sacto this year
Detroit, yes. But I don't think the Bucks, Wolves, or Rockets are anywhere near safe bets to outpace us. Their ceilings are about ours - 30 wins, 35 with luck - with the Wolves probably the worst of the lot.

be careful with your prediction of the TWolves. Health would be the biggest reason they bust. Love/Jefferson is one of the better frontcourts there are. young, yes, but immensly talented and proven, unline our frontcourt. Love was putting up monster rebounding numbers, and Jefferson before his injury was better than KG in the timespan when they were traded (numbers wise). If Flynn is actually any good at the NBA level (I hate saying this but man this guy reminds me of Dee Brown from Ilinois a couple of years ago, just bigger with a slightly better J, but that's not saying much) this team might not be as bad as they seem.. However, Jefferson now has a serious Achilles injury and Love is on the shelf for a bit so we get a running start :)

We should start a game - who will lead the rockets in scoring each game? Isn't TMac supposed to be out until January? And he's coming back off an injury that would have been career ending 10 years ago - I wouldn't count on him for much

You have to be completely ignorant, ridiculously lowly, and mentally unstable to come up with such ridiculously inaccurate, erroneous, and overwhelmingly ret#rded standings. This guy obviously doesn't understand basketball very well, or isn't updated on the teams too well.

I could argue about the positions of about 25 teams on his list, but I'll just say that in my opinion the Kings shouldn't be last. Not even second to last.

But whatever, I'll give this man some slack... it is, after all, tough to come up with a list of teams being a mentally handicapped moron that this guy is.

I rest my case

We finished with the worst record, had, probably with good conviction the worst product on the floor at any given time, and did not pick up a Lebro James in the draft that would make us significantly better next season. I'd say we deserve the bottom spot. We've not proven anything, and until we do, the rest of the leauge is above us. These are preseason rankings, not rankings based on hope and jolly thoughts. Now, his reasons are pure bull**** and Stein is not really known as a credible source of basketball knowledge but it is damn difficult to *predict* where each team will stand. Did anybody peg Ariza as the X-Factor for the Fakers before the season started? **** happens, things change. Until we prove something we are dead last, and it's not even a close comparison.

edit - the bucks - they're the comparison. by all accounts, we should be better than them.

Poor Hornets. I thought they were going to be so much better last year. They need to land a few more players so Chris Paul can get the credit he deserves

Stein generally does pretty well, but I'm not really buying us dead last a second year in a row. Barring an injury of course. Not sure why the Bucks have become such a popular pick to supplant us at the bottom though given what they acheived last year scrapping under Skiles without Redd or Bogut for most of the year. They lost some guys of dubious value, but Jennings looks good, and their two best players might actually be healthy for a full year this time.

i dont see us being the worst team in the nba 2 years in a row... as long as we can beat the other bad teams we should be okay.

30th, huh? That's higher than I expected.

In all seriousness, I don't think the Kings will be that bad. Lower tier for Sacramento, sure, and another injury away from claiming the worst spot, but unlike prior years, I don't think this team will lose as many close games. Call it intuition, call it a coaching upgrade.

Aha! It's your fault.
