Moag said this week that the NBA and Cal Expo likely will push forward with planning for a mixed-use project at the fairgrounds that would include an arena and a revamped venue for the State Fair. The two parties expect to seek proposals from developers in March, he said.

But actual construction is unlikely to occur until the real estate economy improves.

Moag said he plans to come to Sacramento in late February for the unveiling of the master plan for the Cal Expo development, along with the NBA's financial feasibility study for the project.

He said the analysts hired by the NBA have concluded that "if we were in a good economy, we have a project that just may work."

Such a strong statement with "if" and "may" in there. ;)

Of course, the truth is that it's not a good economy for moving a team either. At this point, I could only potentially see the team moving to a city with a new or relatively new, NBA-approvable arena already in place or guaranteed.

For example, Kansas City comes to mind.

Of course, Sacramento is one of the hardest hit regions, economically. Since it's a government town, State workers losing 10% of their salary is going to make it even worse and likely will push some more families into foreclosure. Can you imagine households where both are State workers? That'll be a 20% hit to income. Better than no job, but not much, if you lose your home. :(

Certainly buying game tickets or team gear falls off the list of ways to spend money, if it hasn't already.

I work for the state and it does suck. But its not 20% for 2 income state family.

Say both make $50 for a total of $100. If 1 loses 10% that is $5 so the total is $95 or 5% decrease. If they both lose 10% thats $10 loss dropping the total to $90. A 10% loss.

I was going to point out that math doesn't work that way but figured why bother, the point she was making still stands. I have a semi-public Oregon job and as bad as it is here I really feel for you guys down there.

I do hope that they push forward with plans despite the bad economy, seems like a good use of stimulus dollars - short term jobs, long term infrastuctural development, and in theory the costs should be down.

Well, I obviously earned a "doh" for that. Posting without thinking for a few seconds.

I worked for the State for 25 years and am retired now. Work for the feds now.

It isn't likely to gain stimulus package dollars, becasue it's nowhere near ready. However, in the long run, it would still bring jobs during construction and long term with new businesses. And it's infill. Meaning the new businesses, offices and residents wouldn't add to sprawl.

Kings are never mentioned here about moving. Normally all the talk is NHL. I'm sure the same deal is in place for any franchise, but the deal for the NHL was 50/50 split with AEG in running the place. AEG and the Maloofs together would be one amazing entertainment venue. But I say more than likely the Kings will stay in Sacramento, I dont see a move to KC.

I know it's a bit off the topic but what do you think the odds that we could entice a NHL team to come to town with the new arena? Was wondering because if I remember correctly the Sharks games were a big success in Sacramento..

I would love to see a hockey team in Sac. Sharks probably wouldn't, tho. The team in Stockton probably wouldn't be happy either.

Of course, at the aged Arco, it's not even a remote possibility.

It would be absolutely great. However, chances to land a NHL team are not that good. I think that Winnipeg, Hamilton and even small Quebec City are better markets for hockey. Plus, Las Vegas wants a major sport team and I think they can get a hockey team someday.... may be sooner than we all think. Kansas City has a brand new arena and they want a team (Pitt almost moved there 2 years ago) but I do not think it is smart for NHL to put another team in that part of America. And there are only two movable teams now - Nashville and Tampa Bay. I do not think that Atlanta will lose its team anytime soon. However, it would be nice to land either Vincent Lecavalier or Ilya Kovalchuk :)

At the same time, a minor league team would be nice. I'd say a SJ farm club. The Sharks can move their ECHL club to Sacramento and here we come - a great rivalry between Thunder and RoadRunners.

Ok, I have to stop because I can talk hours about this beautiful game :)

Hockey would be a great selling point. More dates in the building the better. AHL is also been rumored at expanded out west. You would think with a new arena Sacramento woulld be on a list.

???

We FINALLY get an indication that should be good news and it's quickly dissolved into a discussion of first faulty math and then the NHL???

...sigh...

Actually, IMO the fact that Sac is a govt town makes it much less hurt by the economy. A bad economy hurts the private sector much more than the govt. Our main problem is all of the foreclosures.

This is old news. The Central Gov. wants us to think we are getting a new arena. In reality, one will be built in the form of apartments. The only way to finance an arena nowadays is to build it in between and inside of apartments that range in actually property value. Lets put it this way, HOTEL/MALL/BIODOME/NBA ARENA. Once priority property is prepaid for, the building might happen, if it wasn't in such awkward location. Next to water, this biodome would need to be massive with drastic features that would sound laughable at first. Simply put, they are looking at a 1 billion dollar monolith of a potential (mistake), where as it stand right now, ARCO.

We need to make a "Best of FakeInjury posts" thread.

IMHO, a new arena on the Cal Expo site was a dumb idea when it was first floated. Now that the economy is in the toilet a new arena at CE is completely unworkable. The only feasable option is in that big hole right next to the current arco. Thats my prediction where this thing is headed. The maloofs are not going to endure 2-4 more years of maybe's and if's and "we'll continue talking to the NBA". Time is our enemy and this economic downturn hasn't even hit bottom yet. I still think when all is said and done this team is as good as gone.
