We over at Ezekielbearsports.com recently got the opportunity to interview Sacramento Kings Head Coach. We would like to thank Coach Musselman for taking the time out of his busy schedule, along with some help from the Kings Front Office for setting up the interview. Mr. Musselman was more then happy to help, so, here are the answers to the questions you posed:
How do you see Douby/Price being used? Do you know yet what role they will be playing in the offense? What do you feel the rotation at PG will be?
EM: Both Quincy and Ronnie had solid summer league performances. Ronnie provides excellent on the ball defense. Quincy’s outside shooting will stretch the defense out. Their roles will be developed in training camp.
Will Mike Bibby spend more time being a traditional point guard or will be used in more of a scoring point guard style, as has been the case for most time in Sacramento?
EM: Mike’s a scoring point guard and he will continue to provide leadership, perimeter shooting and excellent ball handling skills.
Do you see Corliss getting any minutes or is he going to be left out like he was under Adelman. He's not THAT old yet, only 32, and I think he can contribute something when Ron/Reef/Kenny's out of the game. How do you feel Corliss can contribute to the Kings?
EM: Corliss is one of our team leaders and can provide post-up points.
As with any team, there are still holes in every roster. We haven't done too much to address the shotblocking need except go after Loren Woods. What is the feeling about our lack of shotblocking?
EM: We hope that Loren Woods can provide shot-blocking. Training camp invitee, Justin Williams, has developed a reputation as a collegiate shot blocker and did an excellent job for the Kings summer league team.
Do you plan to play with a small backcourt at times, shifting Bibby at SG?
EM: We feel we can go with a small or a big lineup. We can also go big with John Salmons at PG.
Will Ron do a lot of ball handling?
EM: Ron did a great job last year playing some point forward. We envision him doing some of that as well.
Do you expect Douby to play a decent role this year? Or will he be better off learning the game as past King rookies have done?
EM: Exhibition season will be very important for Quincy as well as working with strength and conditioning coach, Daniel Shapiro.
What was your reaction when you found out that the Kings were interested in hiring you?
EM: I was extremely excited to have the opportunity to work for the best owners in the NBA, to work for one of the top general managers and be closer to my two sons that live in Danville, CA.
How will you be delegating authority and assignments to your assistants? Are your assistants on their own or will you be collaborating with them on all minutia regarding offensive, defensive sets, practice drills etc...
EM: Every decision we make is made as a group. We have assembled a great staff. Scott Brooks will help me with the offense, TR Dunn and Brendan O’Connor with the defense. Mark Hughes and Jason Hamm will work with the development of players.
Many people were shocked to hear that Coach Adelman had such a strained relationship with the Maloof family, even after working together for years and enjoying a respectable amount of success. What is your feel (so far) as to how the Maloofs will be interacting with you as the Head of the Sacramento Kings? Do you foresee them as being more hands on, in line with a Mark Cuban? Or do you think they will just sit back and enjoy?
EM: The Maloofs have great energy and passion. I think the coaching staff and the Maloof’s personality are a really good fit.
What kind of offense will you be running?
EM: We have a variety of half court sets and we also have our Open Offense.
We have a lot of guys that will need time at the PF slot, but, not much at C. Do you plan to use Reef at Center maybe to get he and Kenny in the game at the same time?
EM: Yes, that is something we will do.
How much pressure do you feel coming into the Kings organization, who has made the playoffs for so many seasons in a row?
EM: All NBA head coaching have pressure just as any leadership job in any organization.
The Kings have a very bright future with their young core. How do you feel about the young prospects/stars the Kings have on their roster?
EM: We are extremely excited about the development of Kevin Martin. K-Mart had a great season last year and had an exceptional summer league. We hope Francisco (Garcia) has a solid season as well.
So far, what has been your favorite thing about Sacramento, and your favorite thing about the Kings Organization?
EM: My favorite thing about the Kings Organization is the family atmosphere. It’s a very laid-back environment and a lot of friendships have already developed. Kevin Martin and I have even had a chance to go to several lunches and dinners. We have enjoyed boating on the river and going to Monarch and River Cat games.
There seems to be a lot of pressure on Kevin Martin to step in and fill some pretty big shoes; How has his offseason went?
EM: He had a great summer league and had been in the practice facility the entire summer working in the weight room and on the court.
When the Kings traded Peja, they lost a pretty big outside shot, and didn't have a sharpshooter on the wing without Peja. Now with Martin starting at SG, do you feel the Kings will be able to play an inside, outside game with Artest in the post and Martin being a sharpshooter from outside along with Bibby?
EM: We feel we have outside shooters in (Mike) Bibby, (Kevin) Martin, (Francisco) Garcia, (Brad) Miller and (Quincy) Douby. So, we do feel that way.
After you were hired, the Maloofs made many comments about your preperation and desire for the game and winning. What can we expect from you and the boys this year?
EM: It’s our job as a coaching staff to help prepare the players every night. We expect our players to bring that same passion for winning every night, and have a great season!
We would like to thank Coach Musselman, along with Dayna and Jamie from the Sacramento Kings for their time and effort, along with their help to conduct the interview.
