My 06-07 Roster:

Fresno King

Starter
Keep Bibby, Artest, Abdur-Rahim, Martin, Garcia, Monia, and Miller. (7 players)

Re-sign Bonzi Wells to a 4 year, 36 million dollar contract (I'm on board with that one). (8)

Trade Thomas, next year's second round pick, and cash to the Bobcats for RFA Melvin Ely. (9)

Trade Hart and Williamson to the Sonics for Danny Fortson. (10)

Sign UFA PG Speedy Claxton to a 3 year contract. (11)

Draft Louisiana Tech PF Paul Millsap. (12)

Sign rookie free agent PG Chris Hernandez to a 1 year contract. (13)

Release Price and Sampson.

Trade Potapenko to anyone for cash considerations.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN:

PG-Mike Bibby, Speedy Claxton, Chris Hernandez
SG-Bonzi Wells, Kevin Martin, Francisco Garcia
PF-Ron Artest, Danny Fortson, Paul Millsap
SF-Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Sergei Monia
C-Brad Miller, Melvin Ely

MY TAKE: The Kings would have been at least a 4 seed in the playoffs this year if they had Artest all season, so why get rid of Miller? He's still one of the top 5 centers in the league, and makes other big men do what they aren't used to: guard the perimeter, making backdoor cuts and pick and rolls a lot easier to execute.

Anyone heard of Ely? (Fresno State's career scoring leader):

9.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg
6-10, 208 lbs. - 28 years old

-Terrific up-fake move and hook shot
-Can play center or forward

Claxton is the best PG on the free agent market:

12.3 ppg, 4.8 apg, 1.5 spg
5-11, 180 lbs. - 28 years old

Millsap is the next Ben Wallace:

03-04 (freshman) - 15.6 points, 12.5 rebounds per game
04-05 - (sophomore) - 20.4 and 12.4
05-06 (junior) - 19.6 and 13.3

-NCAA Rebounding leader all three years (first player in NCAA history to lead the nation in rebounding 3 years in a row)
-NCAA Honorable Mention All-American
-First team All-WAC 2 consecutive seasons

Hernandez is a poor man's John Stockton:

Started in all 30 games for the Cardinal ... Averaged 14.0 points and led the team with a .901 free throw shooting percentage ... First-team Pac-10 All-Conference honoree ... Became the 34th player in school history to reach 1,000 points for his career ending with 1,265 ... First-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection ... Led the squad with 35 steals on the year and 99 assists.

You may not like Fortson that much (I HATED him during the 05 playoffs), but can you picture him on the front line with Artest? Fortson can rebound and bring even more toughness. He's burned his bridge with the Sonics, so getting him won't be too tough.

Financially, I think this works. Williamson, Thomas and Hart come off the books, leaving salary space to re-sign Wells, and bring Claxton and Fortson on board. Millsap makes low 1st round money like Garcia did, and Hernandez gets the minimum, like Price did.

Best of all... I didn't think about the Whizzinator during this entire post until now!!! Talk about a cleansing!!!

Could we win a championship with this team? I think so... if Mario Elie coached it! :D

I don't want anything to do with Fortson. And, I don't want Fortson disturbing Artest which they very well may clash heads. Sorry, no fortson for me, and Miller has to go as well.

I understand Doc. But...

Petrie has gambled on the following players with questionable pasts and have succeeded:

Chris Webber
Jason Williams
Jim Jackson
Keon Clark
Vernon Maxwell
Bonzi Wells
Ron Artest
Tony Massenburg (uh... there's always an exception)

You can't tell me you were completely gung-ho about Artest. Why would this be any different?

Because Fortson is insane. He's a foul machine looking for a technical to happen. And he's bottom line dumber than a box of rocks...

But I'd do the same deal for Brian Skinner. I don't know why Adelman stopped playing that guy.

Now that I might even agree with. I liked Skinner. But please, no Fortson.

And...

Artest didn't have a reputation for being a little insane? Borderline coo-coo? Fortson rebounds, makes his free throws, and takes players out of their games by pissing them off. I don't care what his reputation is. He would fit in just fine. I don't think the team would moan and groan if that deal went down.

There's the real fly in the ointment. The Cats have no reason to take on a burden like Kenny Thomas IMHO.

Artest is at least good enough on the court to balance out any potential insanity. Fortson isn't. He's a walking technical foul waiting to happen...and he never learns.

Why do you think he's worn out his welcome everywhere he's been? It's not about his reputation. It's about cold, hard facts and statistics.

But I'm not gonna argue because that's one trade that ain't gonna happen.

;)

P.S. You do realize that Artest isn't a power forward, right?

And one more thing? The dude wears pigtails. No thanks.

Artest has superstar-potential talent and will do anything within his power to win games. All Fortson is good at is injuring other players and collecting fouls.

Thomas

Charlotte could make it a 3 way deal and send him somewhere so he can start... like the Lakers for Walton or Cook and a pick.

Starting 5

Bibby, Wells, Artest, Shareef and Miller is a great starting five... regardless of who's playing what forward position.

Great starting five? Good, maybe, but not great. Very good, perhaps, if the real Brad Miller returns and not the obvious clone substitution we saw in the playoffs, but not great.

i don't trust getting players from small colleges. Now i know that it all worked out with kevin martin, but I,this is my own opinion, am only sure about players who i have seen play and that were on good teams. Good players on bad teams don't always pan out. Im still all for drafting a back up point. Farmar or Douby would be great.

Millsap

Lousiana Tech went 20-13 last year and Millsap had 27 points and 12 rebounds against Memphis... a #1 seed in this year's NCAA Tournament. 10-19 from the field, 4 offensive rebounds, 7-9 from the line.

I like getting claxton as a backup but other then that i don't like the plan, the biggest problem i have with this plan is us keeping Brad. With a new system, i really don't expect Brad to be asked to pass and shoot jumpers like he did in the past. I think he will be asked to play big and get rebounds, which he has yet to prove. So getting a guy who would, like Tyson Chanlder, is what i think is best.

I don't know about that. Thing is, as impressive as those numbers are, they were put up in a pretty weak basketball conference. We have to be careful with players from teams in weak conferences leading the country in categories. They are at a huge advantage compared to guys playing for teams in elite conferences like the Big East, ACC, Pac 10, Big 10 etc...

Put a guy like Shelden Williams in the WAC and he goes Bill Russell on everyone.

Put Millsap in the ACC against teams like Duke, Carolina, NC State, Wake Forest, Maryland, Boston College etc.. and no doubt his numbers go down. Though, by how much is anyone's guess.

Kings aren't releasing Price unless he fails to impress in the summer and fall camps. Which I highly doubt based on Petrie's liking of him, and what he showed when he played (garbage and regular).

I wouldn't mind ;

C: Chandler-Potapenko
PF: Shelden Williams(yah yah I know)-SAR
SF: Artest-Martin or Garcia move to 3 when Artest is out.
SG: Martin-Garcia
PG: Bibby-Claxton (I like this move)

This is a 50 win team. We should shake things up much because in order to build a good thing we have to keep the good thing together. As for having/not having Wells 3 years 27 mil is all I would give him. As for KT, let him rot at the end of the bench if hs does not play well coming off the bench than try to get rid of him to an East conference team that is OK at C, and SF. Miami?

I like Claxton as our backup to Bibby. Bibby could even play the 2 when him and Claxton are on the court at the same time. Getting Fortson would not be a wise decision. I know the Kings somewhat made a name for themselves for being tough recently but Fortson isn't tough by playing hard since he is too busy hacking away at everyone and trying to get a technical. The locker room situation would be worth putting on TV. It could be called "Who dies first"....

what was that big school Ben Wallace came from. oh yeah Virgina Union. what about Kevin Martin. hmmmm Talent is talent no matter what school you come from. you go to a college based on what you did in high school some player excel and become superstars even at small schools and carry it to the pros. Ask Terrell Owens

Yes that's true, but it's also a very flawed argument. Sure Big Ben, Kevin Martin and TO made it. But what about all those that didnt that you never hear about because, well... they DIDNT MAKE IT! For every Ben Wallace there's 15 unknowns from small schools that were just as good as him in college but never made it to the big league.

Playing College ball for Duke, UCONN, Carolina doesn't guarantee you to be a regular NBA player after your college days are over. But you do have a higher chance of being a pro than if you played for Ham Sandwich State University or Tuna Community College. The big time programs recruit better players, face better opponents, have better coaches, play at a higher level which obviously makes the transition possible and smoother for some of their players that are aspiring to play in the NBA. compared to good players from small schools that dominated collegietaly against other small schools.

Doesn't mean they can't make it! It's just harder for them to do so. And more risky for a GM to draft or sign.

Others who have made a name or a making a name for themselves in the NBA coming from smaller/less known schools:

Mike James - Duquesene. Steadily has established himself since his days in Detroit, and won a ring there.

Stephen Jackson - 43rd pick out of HS, went through CBA, South America after Phoenix. Ditto James, but S-Jax with the Spurs.

Jeff Foster - SW Texas State (seems like a lesser known school).

Devean George - Augsburg (ditto)

Troy Hudson - Southern Illinois

Kyle Korver - Creighton

Quinton Ross - Southern Methodist. All came along this season, and will continue.

Malik Rose - Drexel (I've never heard of it until last month when I saw something on Rose).

Smush Parker - Fordham (didn't hear of it until last year). Had an inconsistent playoffs, but still had a nice overall season. Proved himself, and should next year if the Lakers don't get a new starting PG.

Flip Murrary - Shaw.

Cuttino Mobley - Rhode Island!

Anthony Johnson - Charleston. Wouldn't of said him had it not been for the last 1 or 2 seasons.

Trenton Hassell - Austin Peay.

Lindsey Hunter - Jackson State.

Earl Boykins - Eastern Michigan.

Raja Bell - Florida International.

Derek Fisher - Arkansas-Little Rock (I guess?)

A couple guys who I think will become cases of this in the next 1-3 seasons are Linton Johnson (Tulane) and Kirk Snyder (Nevada-Reno). Both athletic and versatile.

I believe the only other "name" to graduate from Ball State is David Letterman.

;)

Kevin Martin- Western Carolina, can be considered another player from a not well known school.

I also wouldn't want to give up on Ronnie Price yet. I think he has a lot of potential.
