Apparently ESPN2 picked up the Monarchs/Mercury game tonight. Too bad no one I know had heard about it ahead of time.

With the Monarchs win and Connecticut's loss tonight, the M's are tied, I think, for home court advantage if they meet in the WNBA finals. Unfortunately, the Sun have the tie-breaker. 2 games left and it should be interesting.

After tonight's win over the Mercury, the Monarchs are 24-8.....their best record by far. Also, the Monarch's sure take advantage of their home court and their fans. They are 15-2 at home this year. HELL YEAH!!!

I must watch the TV schedule in case the Thurs or Sat games get televised even though they are not currently on the schedule. You never know.

I decided to take in the action at Arco tonight and was again impressed by the ladies' defense. Had a nice seat right behind the Sacramento bench. If the M's can just overcome their typical once a game offensive woes, they should get to the Finals.

BTW, Monarchs are 6-0 when I attended this season. ;)

Anybody wanna buy me playoff tickets? :D

No, but I might be able to get you a couple of seats that you are familiar with in the 1st round.

Arco crowd was great tonight! :D Yes, I do sweat out those offensive droughts. eek! Did they say Kara would be okay? Looked like they had to pop her shoulder back in when she was on the floor with 5+ seconds to go. If so, she should be okay, but sore. Maybe won't play next game?

They said she was okay, and may not miss any games at all.

That's good to hear. I hope so. She let out a snarl leaving the court. I think it was aimed at the Phoenix broadcasters. She was really fired up there at the end, lol.

Yes! Kara is tough, and she let it be known that she was okay. A little thing like a jammed shoulder is not going to slow her down and she wants everyone to know it. :D

Kara and Taurasi were really going after each other late in the game, and they were exchanging some serious jawing right before Kara's free throws near the end.

I did not see what Happened to Kara that caused the shoulder injury, so can someone enlighten me? I was suspecting that Taurasi did something, since she had clearly tried to hurt two Monarchs on separate lay-up attempts earlier when she fouled hard with her body both times without any play on the ball whatsoever, and the heated exchange with Kara right before the injury. But I didn't see the play.

I did not see the actual foul, but the guy sitting in front of me said that Taurasi gave her a hard shove, sending her to the floor. It is a shame. Taurasi is a good player. I used to like her game where she played hard all the time. Now, it seems, she has turned into a dirty player, deliberately trying to hurt other players. I may be wrong, but that is sure what it looks like.

Sitting at the far side, near the Monarchs bench, nobody saw what happened. Let's hope a scan of my tape off of ESPN2 will reveal something. When Kara went down, it took the breath away from several thousand fans.

I'll be interested to see what folks who saw it or can review it have to say on it...I never saw it either and only noticed it because I had the radio on when Koz started indicating that Kara was rolling around on the court in pain...they apparently didn't see what happened either because it was away from the ball. When they saw the replay they seemed to think it was a fluke incident - that Kara had come off a couple of screens and jammed her shoulder in the process. Some other media type person pretty much reiterated that same impression when I walked down to sit a little lower for the post game interviews.

I like seeing Eric Heiden and all, but that's the second time I've seen him sprinting from his usual seat to get to one of our players this season and I REALLY can do without that sight.

Yo's pretty fired up right now and as usual she was very entertaining post game, but she was off the charts last night.....Glad to know Kara should be ok, and hopefully we'll have some more of an indication of where they think DeMya is right now because I haven't heard yet.

actually I was watchin it on espn2, they showed it in slow motion..taurasi didn't knock her to the floor, Taurasi kinda pushed off or something into Kara's shoulder, and Kara seemed fine but when she tried to extend her arm to bother somebody's shot,I think thats when she felt it and she went keeled to the floor...but I could be wrong but thats what I seem to remember..:) I'm glad she's ok tho

I was at the game and seen Kara and Diana exchanging words....soo I figured something more was going to end up coming outta of, I paid close attention to the both of them, from what I seen it looked like Diana just scratched her arm with her hand...but then after Diana ran off Kara was holding her arm then dropped to the floor...So the way that it looked like from what I could see that Diana touched her..it wasnt that bad...but I was curious to how come she dropped to the floor with the little touch I seen...I was furious...upset...thought Diana was a poor sport and what not...well a friend of mine lives in phoenix and she recorded the game..she played that part in slow motion to see exactly what happened and she said "Karas arm hooked on Snells body and bent it backwards when she turned" I dont recall snell being around that area at the time...She also claims there was no contact between Kara and Diana...she played it back a few times and swears no contact...I would like to see a slow motion replay of that...

yea, I turned to NBA TV thinking it was gonna be on there...and they were showing some other program. I happened to turn to ESPN 2 and luckily they were playing. I must have looked at the schedule wrong or something.

I didn't see the actual contact either. I watched them coming up the court because I thought something might happen, but I was looking away at the time. Since they didn't show the replay at the game, there was no way to tell. Because it came right after the extended heated exchange between Taurasi and Kara, it just seemed suspicious. I really hope it was a fluke. I'll be watching the game on TIVO and watching Taurasi closely. I recall a couple of what seemed like unnecesssarily very hard fouls. I used to like her too, but this season I have to say I really don't care for her attitude. She is a big complainer and now perhaps getting the reputation for being dirty too.

There is nothing wrong with physical play, but when it becomes dirty, it is something that the league needs to step up an address. It wouldn't be hard to review tape to see which players are engaging in it. It would be a shame for any team to have their playoff hopes affected by a flagrant foul.

I totally agree with you JD. Taurasi is becoming more thug-like and she does constantly whine to the refs. She hammered Chelsea early in the game, which I thought should have been a flagrant. And she was not happy with Chelsea's constant hand in her face. She still got her shots though. Her jawing with Kara towards the end was just stupid. Kara was also talking to the ref during her free throws. I'm hoping the league will review the tape. That kind of play is totally uncalled for. And their letting that kind of play continue is dangerous to all players.

Monarchs continue to run hot

They equal the best record in the WNBA, but Kara Lawson is hurt late in the game.

By Debbie Arrington -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 2:15 am PDT Wednesday, August 24, Story appeared in Sports section, Page C1

Another night produced another milestone for the playoff-bound Monarchs. But with the gain came one more troublesome injury.

In their final home game of the regular season, the Monarchs turned back the Phoenix Mercury 76-70 on Tuesday night at Arco Arena. The victory tied Western Conference champion Sacramento with the East-leading Connecticut Sun for the best record in the WNBA at 24-8.

But in the closing five seconds, Monarchs guard Kara Lawson suffered a freak injury to her left shoulder that will sideline her for the team's final two road games and maybe more.

"We just hope to get her back for the playoffs," Monarchs coach John Whisenant said.

Lawson, who scored 11 points, felt her shoulder pop while she was guarding Diana Taurasi and crumbled to the court in pain. After examination, team doctors termed Lawson's injury a sublexation - not a dislocation, as first feared.

The setback put a damper on an otherwise happy Fan Appreciation Night. In another spectacular performance, Yolanda Griffith notched her seventh double double of the season with 25 points and 10 rebounds. To chants of "MVP" from the Arco crowd of 8,932, the All-Star center thanked the fans for doing their part in helping the Monarchs to a league-best 15-2 home record - a first for the franchise.

"It's a great feeling," she said of the accomplishment. "When we saw Connecticut was losing, we knew we couldn't slack."

Phoenix (16-16) made it tough with four players in double figures, topped by Taurasi's 19 points. But on defense, the Monarchs forced Taurasi into a career-high nine turnovers - tying the worst performance by any WNBA player this year.

"Credit Sacramento," Phoenix coach Carrie Graf said. "Their pressure defense is a trademark."

In the race for the league's best overall record, the Indiana Fever did the Monarchs a favor by beating the Sun 69-63 in Connecticut - the Sun's third loss at home this season. Connecticut finishes its schedule by hosting the 15-17 Washington Mystics on Friday, then traveling to cellar-dweller Charlotte (5-27) on Saturday. That may seem easy, but both the Mystics and Sting won Tuesday.

Connecticut holds the tiebreaker over Sacramento, so the Monarchs need to win out while hoping the Mystics or Sting can pull an upset to clinch the best overall record and home-court advantage in a potential championship finals meeting.

In the West, the Los Angeles Sparks stayed in the playoff hunt with a 74-63 win over the Minnesota Lynx. The Sparks are now tied with Phoenix for fourth and the last playoff berth, but the Mercury holds the tiebreaker.

Needing a combination of two wins and/or L.A. losses to clinch a postseason berth, the Mercury decided to save one of its key starters for its final home game Thursday against the Houston Comets. Forward Penny Taylor, who averages 13.6 points, stayed in Phoenix to nurse a bruised left calf. Lisa Harrison, who came out of retirement for the Mercury earlier this summer, started in Taylor's absence.

"I think Phoenix is against the wall," Monarchs guard Ticha Penicheiro said. "They're trying to make the playoffs and we already have that. We still hope to get the best record in the league."

As MBF said, when Dr Eric Heiden (in the background) comes running onto the court, it's not a good thing.

I'm sure the Taurasi fans are saying shes just a tough player. Well, tough and dirty are two different things. Her attitude of arrogance and holier-than-thou are not good for this league.

Another angle to consider: I can't help but to think that the jawing off between Taurasi and Kara Lawson might possibly also included the rivalry between the colleges they went to? (Taurasi went to UConn and Kara went to Tennessee)

Taurasi didn't do anything to cause that injury to Kara. I watched it when I got home. Freak accident.

Taurasi might have been whining all game long and doing things to the Monarchs that we didn't particularly like...but she didn't do anything here.
