</IMG>Cuttino Mobley is worth to be called 'Captain'Team Leader? You bet.
Future All-Star? Quite Possibly.
Major part of the Magic's success this season? Most definitely.

Despite all of the talk of the heroics of Steve Francis and the return of Grant Hill, there is one man who continues to lurk in the shadows, like a cat, patiently waiting to make his move.

Cuttino Mobley is the starting Shooting Guard for the Orlando Magic and if you haven't heard much about him, it's probably because he's one of the most underrated guards in the league. A product of the University of Rhode Island, Mobley has made a career of being the unsung hero with little fanfare. While Francis weeps all of the national attention and the "Franchise" nicknames, the man appropriately named "Cat," continues to be the Pippen to Francis' Jordan. Scottie Pippen never received the accolades that he deserved and now that his career is over, we can hardly remember his All-Star caliber performances during his tenure as a Bull, Rocket, or Trailblazer. For Mobley, the journey is all too similar.

In Houston, Mobley was the sidekick to the former Maryland star. Francis brought the flash and flare, while Mobley brought the substance. When Francis was traded to Orlando, he couldn't have been happier when he realized that his backcourt mate would be joining him on his trip to Walt Disney World. Francis' success is also rooted in the success of Mobley, and together they make a great tandem. They quite easily form the best backcourt in the Eastern Conference, and Orlando Magic fans have been pleasantly surprised at the chemistry between both players, and all are excited about the type of game they bring every night.

But Mobley's quiet contributions don't stop there. He is a leader both on and off the court. He has already begun the blueprint of preparing weekly Sunday brunches for his Magic teammates and coaching staff. While most players would rather be in bed resting their bodies, Mobley believes that this form of team bonding off the court can only be beneficial on it. Mobley is also vocal. After the Magic recently laid an egg against expansion team Charlotte, Mobley interrupted his locker room interview to remind his teammates about the importance of winning games and the necessity of coming out even stronger in the next game. As a leader, he didn't falter in Magic's win against the Dallas Mavericks. He backed up his strong words and had a successful game until he developed a muscle strain that limited his minutes, but before he departed, he left an impression on the game and on his players. He demanded maximum effort from his Magic teammates, and he himself led by example.

Mobley has the potential of becoming an All-Star in a guard driven conference. Much like the success of Milwaukee Bucks star Michael Redd, Mobley is simply a winner. He doesn't excite you with his athleticism or ability to make "Sportscenter" spectacular plays, but Mobley is capable of putting up points in droves (17 points in the fourth quarter against the Bobcats), and is an above average defender who takes his job and responsibilities as a leader very seriously. Mobley will continue to be the star player who stands in the shadows, doing everything necessary for the Magic to win. If Orlando can continue with a positive season, the rest of the league is sure to take notice, and although Francis and Hill will be the first names mentioned, Mobley's name won't be far behind.

A recent game against the Washington Wizards helped to highlight just how much of a presence Mobley is for the Magic. While not the superstar player that he has replaced, his leadership qualities and scoring abilities are something that fits perfectly into what the Magic are trying to accomplish this season, and his absence against the Wizards was certainly felt. The defense suffered, the offense suffered, and the team continuity suffered. Francis and Hill are the prime time players, but Mobley is the quiet assassin.

Contrary to what many Magic fans believe, the true success of the team this season will by and large be based on the contributions of Cuttino Mobley. He is the vocal leader who encourages his teammates to go that extra mile. He is the budding All-Star that no one knows about. And he is the valuable asset that was the true steal of the July trade. Mobley will fail to disappoint and give maximum effort both on and off the floor. Unlike last season, the Magic will not quit and much of that success should fall in the hands of Mobley. Grant Hill maybe the captain of the Magic, but Cuttino Mobley should be the one wearing the "C" on his jersey.

This is the type of attitude this team needs with quasi-leader Vlade gone. BJ would be the other candidate for leader but hes out. If all of this is true about him, this void is perfect for him to fill. Only time will tell.

nice find, realy good to see. I have always liked Cat's play and it's good to see h is big on team schemisty he ought ot fit in well.

Mobley must learn to assimilate into the KINGS syStem of Basketball before the LEARDERSHIP TITLE is to be given.THE KINGS system is based on a REAL TEAM CONCEPT one that revolves around ONE ball mentality and that ONE ball is to be shared evenly amongst the 5 guys on the floor. There is a fabric of basketball unity already in place in this system and new guys coming in must FIT IN and it is not the other way around.DOUG CHRISTIE AND VLADE DIVAC were the WISEMEN on the TEAM and now there departures have left the LEADERSHIP symbols in the minds of the NEW LEADERS that these players groomed through their personal examples that they displayed ON and OFF the floor for the TEAM.These new leaders WEBBER ,PEJA ,BIBBY,MILLER have been given the greatest examples of leadership and TEAM UNITY by players like DOUG CHRISTIE and VLADE DIVAC so that LEADERSHIP TITLE is already in place and new players Be it mobley or whoever must fit into the LEADERSHIP foundations already laid down.

nice article, but the thing i remember most about Cuttino was last year against the Lakers he played awesome and did indeed go unrecognized, especially in game 4 when he hit a couple of clutch baskets.

You can not just show up and be a leader. Some things You have to earn.

Really? Who were the Kings leaders in the lockout shortened 1998-99 season? As far as I know, it was a couple of big men who showed up for training camp and asserted their leadership and personality onto the team.

Wow - You just manage to:

A) compare Mobley with Vlade and CW

B) compare a totally new team from 1998/99 with the new coach - with Kings of today.

Apples and oranges

I'm sure that Cat isn't going to show up with the intent of becoming the leader right away or at anytime, but if someone is used to being a leader it won't take long for that person to become what they are used to becoming. I'm not saying that he will become what Vlade or DC was to this team because he won't, but he will provide leadership qualities that the team needs. Besides, who would you rather have on your team; a proven leader or just a follower? Thanks for the article...that was great.

On an established team like ours Cutino isn't just going to show up and be THE leader, but the fact that he has leadership traits definitely helps. Both Vlade and Doug already had leadership traits before they came here. Both had worn the "C" for captain on their previous teams. If Cutino comes in with a similar background, that can only bode well for the future.

I didn't know which thread to put this in, but I just played against the Suns on ESPN 2K4 with our new roster and Mobely can really fly and throw down some nasty dunks (which was lacking when I played with the Kings before). Is he really all that athletic in real life? I ask because the ESPN games generally try to make the player's skill level similar to that of real life.

BTW, the Kings won 111- 98 (on superstar level) :D

Piksi, no doubt about it. At this point all Im saying is that this guy has the potential to fit into DC and Vlades shoes IF he can mold into the chemistry of the Kings. If he decides to become a ball-hog, then I would agree, I don't think he will gain the respect. But I think, from the articles I've read, he wants to win, and have fun, and he knows that part of having fun is to keep his teammates happy. Everyone who's joined Adelman's Kings has increased their Assist, so I have a feeling he will at worst average 3 assists per game. Remember that as a team we are #1 in Assist department, and thats contagious. Obviously he will have be a part of those assists someway, somehow.

No one thought of this, but for someone to get an assist, the other teammate must score. If Mobley is the offensive power that he is, then expect everyone's assist to increase. If Peja and Bibby gets open looks more often, then expect Mobley to find them for the open J. Mobley wholely depended on Francis and how he shot, now Im hoping he will distribute to 4 guys out there, because those 4 guys can all shoot.

Mobley allready said that he will opt out. No guarantee that we will resign him (sign and trade possible). Hard to be a leader if You do not plan/know wheather you will be around or not.

True. But we still own his rights. Also, hes got 40+ games to proove himself. If he prooves hes valuable to this team, then I don't expect them to resign BJ. They should have enough to resign Cuttino and Peja. At least, resign Cuttino to what he wants and trade him would be a second option. If Cuttino sucks (long shot here), then we let him go and Petrie can re-tool. Win-Win :)

mobley is probably a good guy, and probably a great leader. he may be just want we need.
he's a king, and i love the kings, so i am willing to learn about him and learn to love him.
but he would still have to prove himself. only time will tell.

for now that's all i have to say

People sometimes say things in the heat of the moment they later retract. I think it's going to be an interesting experience for everyone - the team, the fans, etc. in seeing how Cuttino fits into the big picture. If it's a good fit all the way around, he just might end up staying.

It wouldn't be the first time someone had changed their minds about staying with the Kings.

;)
