MMA fighters

Ha! And I saw this thread and you as the last poster and excitedly clicked to hear your take on mixed martial artists! ;)

I don't know a thing about them either even though I occasionally watch the UFC... I just can't follow it as easily as boxing although I may try once the new Showtime circuit starts.

Heck yeah, that boy is ice cold. One of my favorite MMA fighters out there right now. He's just awesome. Are you a Pride FC and/or UFC fan?
I'm a MMA fan in general...I train locally with a few fighters in UFC and WEC. I'm anxious to see how much longer until Liddell fights either Silva or Quinton Jackson. Jackson is the only guy who's beat Liddell(in Pride), but Chuck came back and whooped up on Jeremy Horn after Horn beat him, and then he beat Couture after Randy beat him before. I think it should be pretty exciting, though. Not sure where Wanderlei fits in, as far as title shots(Wanderlei would have to actually leave Pride to keep the title, of course, should he actually beat Chuck) coming up. I figure they'll either push him or Jackson for Chuck next. I'm liking the lightweight division, as well...watch out for my boy Urijah Faber...if the UFC doesnt make a featherweight division, he'll probably gain 10 lbs and move up to lightweight in the next year or so, now that the UFC bought the WEC. Oh, btw...Scott Smith, who I also train with, is fighting Patrick Cote in 2 weeks at UFC 67...and then at UFC 68 James Irvin looks like he's either fighting the deaf guy from the Ultimate Fighter 3(cant remember his name, great wrestling skills, though), or Wilson Gouveia.

if you dig MMA, you'll want to catch the showtime mma debut on 2/10 featuring Frank Shamrock Vs. Gracie.

Also, keep an eye out on my boy Brandon Vera, dudes the next big thing in MMA.

Yeah, I know about the Showtime thing, should be interesting how they showcase some of their younger fighters. Vera is cool, have seen his last few fights. Next fight card here in Sac: March 17th at Memorial Auditorium here in Sac...'St. Paddywhack'(Gladiator Challenge)...I think a couple of guys from my martial arts school are fighting, I havent seen the whole card yet, but we usually have a few in it.

So is the Showtime thing going to be worth watching for the casual fight fan who wouldn't dream of paying for a PPV? They've been hypeing the crap out of it on their boxing telecasts for so long now.

Anybody had a chance to watch Warrior Nation on MSNBC this last few weeks?

Its been pretty good. Surprisingly accurate.

Eh...I dunno...it may be watchable, it may not be. I think they have a few guys on there who are decent. It will either catch on real quick, or it will die a horrible death, like the XFL. I, myself, will watch it for the pure MMA of it...I mean, Renzo vs. Frank might be good, but who knows about the rest. UFC, Pride, and WEC still are above this thing that showtime is trying to do right now.

Thanks. Its seems like with boxing Showtime has been going after the most exciting fights and fighters and letting HBO pay for the big names and the frequent snoozefests that result from setup fight after setup fight. I know enough about MMA to recognize the Gracie and Shamrock names but the last time I saw any of them they stunk and it was clear the sport had evolved past them (granted it was Royce and Ken). So I can't even fathom what Showtime is trying to do here. I'll probably watch just out of curiosity either way.

the card was definitely worth it, imo. i was dissapointed that gracie didn't have more class and had to be over dramatic for the win by default, a shame really since shamrock was dominating up till that point. frank shamrock is still just awesome. i also have a newfound hate for bennet, that guy really gets on my nerves. overall, pretty good card. i'll be watching.

I liked it. I thought Shamrock was the one lacking class with his post fight comments. Gracie was probably winning on points at the time of the stoppage although I'd agree that Shamrock was the only one doing physical damage. Disappointing end to an otherwise decent card. Not up to Pride/UFC standards but better than the other little guys I've seen and it was their first event. Their rules favor upright action which as a boxing fan I will admit to prefering so I'll watch as long as its on regular Showtime.

Class?! Gracie was knocked for a loop. He had lil cartoon canaries circling around his melon. He had a legit cuncussion.

The Lockeford boy didnt look like an all time great last night.... Baroni just may kill him.

The Gina Carano vs. Julie Kedzie was awesome. That was definately the best fight of the night. Carano is definately a star!

Definetely agree about the Carano vs. Kedzie! Carano was incredible, all while being beautiful at the same time. Man that woman is a great striker! But coming from a damn good Muay Thai school like Master Toddy's, thats not surprising. Antonio Silva is a beast, and he made quick work of the out of shape Cabbage Correira. I think the only other real highlight was the Crazy Horse one punch knockout over KJ Noons...dude caught him wicked! Should be interesting to see what Showtime does for an encore, and who else they bring over. Oh, and I do think that Shamrock would have eventually knocked Gracie out, just a shame that we didnt get to see more of a fight out of those guys due to the awkward knees to Gracie's dome. I hope the rematch happens sooner than later, so we dont have to put up with a bunch of hype leading up to it...undeserved hype, no less.

Unbelievable night of fights in the UFC, capped off by the man who is one of my heros, Randy 'The Natural' Couture beating Tim Sylvia to become the new UFC Heavyweight Champion, again. I'm speechless...I mean, my heart always tells me that Randy can beat anyone, but I didnt think he could do it against a man who was 16 years his younger, 6 inches taller, 50 pounds heavier, and 12 more inches in reach. He is truly the greatest champion that MMA has ever seen.

THe Pride fight from last week was the greatest card ive ever seen. Every fight was awesome. The Diaz vs Gomi fight is the best ive ever seen and has been called the econd best MMA fight ever by several longtime MMA Journalists. The Stockton boy did good.:D

Havent seen last nights fight yet but from I hear only seeing Sylvia lose was worthy of watching.... I will see.

I have to agree with pretty much everyone about the Pride card, it was amazing. The Diaz fight was definetely in my top 3 fights that I've ever seen, especially because I feel that the ref was probably going to stop the fight after too much longer...I'm glad it went to the ground when it did, everything worked out great for Nick to sinch in the gogo plata, which I really havent even seen before, even when I train. Sets up a huge rematch, that I think Nick will win, too, not saying that Gomi isnt a good champion, but Nick is so skilled, and is so much longer than Gomi, and he knows how to use that.

As far as Randy beating Tim last night, it was all about heart. I was with my martial arts school out at Mandango's watching the fights last night, there were about 100 of us, and let me tell you, it was LOUD, and EVERYONE was pulling for Randy, we had the 'Randy Randy Randy' chant going through most of the fight. Randy dominated the entire fight, you could pretty much count the # of punches Sylvia landed on both hands for the entire fight. From the moment the first round started, Randy set the tone, especially in the first 10 seconds...he came in with a kick fake to the legs that Tim bought totally, and Randy just nailed him with an overhand left that sent everyone into a frenzy.
