Mempis may lose 2007-08 Final Four standings

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)—Memphis will be forced to vacate the record 38 victories from its Final Four season of 2007-08, according to a report by the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
The newspaper, citing a source close to the situation, said on its Web site Wednesday night that the NCAA will release findings of its investigation into violations committed by the program Thursday.

The NCAA investigated whether someone took the SAT exam for a player on that team. Memphis was notified of potential violations in January and met with the NCAA in June.
Memphis finished 38-2 in 2007-08, setting the NCAA record for wins in a season. The Tigers lost 75-68 to Kansas in overtime in the national championship game.
It would be the second time both Memphis and former coach John Calipari had to vacate Final Four seasons. The Tigers were stripped of their 1985 appearance and Calipari’s Massachusetts team lost its 1996 berth.
Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson, coach Josh Pastner and a spokesman for the team couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday night.
The Commercial Appeal’s source was unaware of any penalties beyond this season.

I believe it was Derrick Rose, and Not Evans that this whole mess started with... I don't think Evans had anything to do with it.

Yep, your absolutely right. This started after the season prior to last season.

Jesus, I always liked Calipari since he coached at UMass back when I lived in Boston, but this is a huge black mark if it happens now to him at two schools.

It doesn't sound like its Evans but I wouldn't be too concerned either way. Webber, Camby and others have gone on to be generally upstanding NBA citizens, its the agents, boosters and other adults that take advantage of these kids that are the problem.

There are as many problems with the NCAA as there are with the coaches that try to bend the rules. Colleges make millions of dollars off their athletic programs. Especially football and basketball. Yet the athletes themselves are susposed to pure as the driven snow and not make a dime. Yeah, I know they get a free ride to college, but how many of them actually want a college education. Most are one and done players and if they stay another year its because scouts and team officials tell them they won't be drafted or they'll slip into the second round.

Players that either don't have the capacity or the foundation to meet the academic standards necessary have few options available to them. The worse part is that when a violation takes place, its the team and the school that get punished. The coach simply picks up and moves to the next school while the team gets its victorys taken away and goes on probabation for a couple of years. The NCAA needs to take a look at itself and make some changes. It won't happen, but it needs to happen..

I'm sorry, but Derrick Rose is responsible. He knows if he actually took the tests or not. An upstanding person would choose not to cheat. I'm tired of our society trying to justify dishonesty and cheating. Individuals need to take responsibility for being honest and for choosing not to cheat or to allow anyone to cheat on their behalf. Agents, boosters and other adults are not to blame. I knew in elementary school it was wrong to cheat and an injustice to all who don't cheat.

Whoah, I am not justifying anything. He owns what he did, I just don't have a concern about it having an effect on his NBA career. But I'd like to see the enablers dealt with rather than just punish the student body and fans of a school.

That I can agree with. :) And no, it won't affect his NBA career one bit.

Since this has nothing to do with the NBA and nothing to do with Tyreke Evans, I've moved it to the General forum.

:)
