Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie wasn't pleased by the news.

"Well, at this point, with the things we are involved in," Petrie said of potential sign-and-trade deals, "having the date pushed back I don't think helps. These are things where we need to have some certainty. But when you're trying to come to an agreement and then you give people more time to negotiate and see if they can make a better deal. ...

"When teams are moving around to see what other things they may be able to do before they get to your thing, generally, that's not a good thing for you.

Man seems like something was about to go down until they pushed the date back.

Free agents in NBA face delay to sign deals

The NBA notified teams Wednesday that the new collective bargaining agreement reached June 21 will not be finalized by Friday, when the free-agent signing period was scheduled to begin.

Free agents cannot sign new contracts until the collective bargaining agreement is finished, and the league did not announce a completion date. In the interim, teams and free agents still will be able to negotiate and reach agreements in principle.

Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie wasn't pleased by the news.

"Well, at this point, with the things we are involved in," Petrie said of potential sign-and-trade deals, "having the date pushed back I don't think helps. These are things where we need to have some certainty. But when you're trying to come to an agreement and then you give people more time to negotiate and see if they can make a better deal. ...

"When teams are moving around to see what other things they may be able to do before they get to your thing, generally, that's not a good thing for you."

The Kings still appear to be involved in conversations with Memphis regarding a deal that would bring swingman Bonzi Wells to Sacramento. The Los Angeles Clippers also have shown serious interest in Wells.

One positive Wells would find in Sacramento is playing time. He probably would start at shooting guard in place of Cuttino Mobley, who has reached a five-year agreement with the Clippers.

Agents reached Wednesday said news of the delayed CBA confirmation did not mean much to them.

Said the Bay Area's Bill Duffy: "I think it was expected, so it is no big deal."

Agent Marc Fleisher said the CBA is a massive document.

"There is a lot of language, and you can end up fighting about every word," said Fleisher, whose late father, Larry, once headed the National Basketball Players Association. "How you calculate the mid-level exception or what the rookie wage scale will be are all things that may not have been determined when the new agreement was reached and then brought to the players."

Fleisher represents free agents Jerome James and Chris Andersen, who have reached agreements with New York and New Orleans, respectively. Fleisher said the delay will not be a factor.

"If you have an agreement done," Fleisher said, "it just means you have to wait another week or so to sign it."

Now, if you're trying to make a trade, things might not feel as safe.

I say it, but if the NBA Player's Union botches up the Kings roster:eek: , I think we should approch the senate to ban all pro-sports unions.:p

Interesting article.

Am I the only one who cannot remember the last time Geoff Petrie said ANYTHING about possible acquisitions before the fact? (Even if it was in his usual "say a lot of words that don't really mean anything"-speak.)

This just might end up being a lot more interesting TDOS before much longer...

;)

Yeah, in another article he actually mentioned players that he is going after. Maybe the Kings do have an ear to the ground, and hopefully are trying to get the message across that they are trying to get things done, but it is particulary difficult this offseason. Hearing from GP on trade prospects is comforting, at least a little bit. So we know he is, in fact, awake.

SAR will be a Net. ESPN hasn't changed their story, especially on TV.

And Carlos Boozer was going to re-sign with the Cavs last year until Utah came up with a last minute better offer. Can't blame those offering but it does test the mettle of the players who have commitments made.

Exactly.

At this point, it's all rumors, speculations, and leaks - mainly by the agents of the players involved. Until we actually see a release on the signing moratorium, anything could happen.

SAR isn't Boozer, and it was just announced again today by AP and ESPN.

SAR will be in Jersey. I'd bet on it.

We shall see. :)

You can put all your faith and reliance in AP and ESPN, and probably be correct. BUT strange things do happen. All I'm saying is to say that SAR has "signed" with the Nets, as some people have been doing, is premature. Just like you aren't married until the preacher says, "I now pronounce you man and wife," SAR won't really be a Net until a contract is signed.

I have to agree -- its just been repeated too often publicly. Think the most our efforts are likely to realistically do is just cause the Nets to bend to the Blazers demands and bump SAR up over the MLE with that exemption.

funny.....er, in a sick demented kinda way--anybody hear about jude law cheating on his fiancee with the nanny? all bets are off, i would think. leastways, if she's a decent self-respecting woman, they should be.

i dont know if there's a fair comparison here, but i thought i'd give it a shot. :p

Guys, I'm just telling you -- this is different. Too public. Too many reassurances directly from the SAR camp. If they backed out of this it would make the Boozer debacle look like nothing.
