"We as a city can't be jerked around," he said. "We can't keep having this issue flare up."

Johnson then indicated he wants the issue resolved by next week.

The NBA team owners will meet in New York next week, when league Commissioner David Stern is expected to raise the matter of the Maloofs' pre-development contribution. Asked if the city would seek new ownership for the team should the Maloofs continue to balk in New York, the mayor said, "We're not going to be a city that sits on its hands."

"Do we need to look at contingency plans? Absolutely," he said.

I was wondering why he was so quiet. The fight is on now.

Good for him. Tired of being jerked around by these MaFOOLS.

My respect for Kevin Johnson continues to grow. For my feelings about the Maloofs, just check my signature.

I'm sure Grant will be defending the Maloof's on his show today. The guy just refuses to see what's really going on.

He put his eggs in the Maloof basket. I guess we'll see in a few weeks if he picked the right basket. You can pretty much ignore his opinions because they are being spoon fed to him along with his MS&E paycheck.

wow! if this were going on in another city with other owners he would be screaming at the owners for bringing this upon themselves.

I am with Grant on this. We are in business with the Maloofs until we are no longer in business with them. While we are in business with them it does no good to make them into enemies.

Sacramento is in a good position. I can't imagine the NBA allowing the Maloofs to take the Kings out of Sacramento now. As bad as that would be for the image of the Maloofs (do they still have an image?) it would be a far worse black eye for the NBA. It would make Seattle look like childs play.

It would be silly for us to begin to lose our tempers, start name calling, or even worse, delivering ultimatums. It will only harm us. Simply continue to negaotiate in good faith, work hard towards the goal and let the Maloofs decide how they will make their beds.

I have sigs turned off, so I'll just imagine what it says in my own mind...

Wow...

Oh, my...

Gee, that could get uncomfortable...

Yep, yep that about says it all. I might have left out the fifteenth paragraph and the part about the rusty pliers, but other than that, spot on!

It's becoming more likely that the NBA will flip the entire bill and stop these leveraging tactics that the Magoofs are up to. KJ had Stern's complete attention ever since he played his ace up his sleeve (Burkle). You gotta pay to play Magoofs and their way to far in debt to even get on the court these days.

That's more than can be said of them.

You can't continue to "negotiate in good faith" when the Maloofs refuse to do that. If you look at the April 4-2-12 letter to the city and the Maloofs taking this public to the LA press, that's clear.

I can't believe there are still some fans that are willing to take further beatings from the Maloofs.

Wow. Is there still a vote on Sac spending money on this tonight?

Basically it's a slam dunk tonight. There is no city money going in to this for the next few weeks. There is 200k from the NBA to carry this over until 4/17. Starting tomorrow morning, engineers from AECOM and others will have kickoff meetings to start working towards a site plan at the railyard. The NBA fronted the money on behalf of the team so that they could begin. They also plan on an NBA board of governors meeting on April 12, 13. They will take action on the rest of the team's contribution at that meeting. IF this gets settled, then the city is willing to kick in there share on 4/17.

Ok thanks for clearing that up for me.

Its obvious that the Maloofs aren't financially capable of owning an NBA team anymore. If they had the money they would pay the fees at least under protest to get the ball rolling and then later address this without delaying the process. Why is George Maloof going public with this? The last thing the project needs is the cave people to use this against the project. I wouldn't doubt that Samueli is advising George Maloof on how to sabotage the arena deal. Perhaps Samueli sweetened the deal to George Maloof behind closed doors. With the Clippers playing well Anaheim is no longer viable.

It really feels like this thing is unraveling. Especially with the news that the anti arena zealots have gotten permission to get signatures to kill the arena deal.

1. Negotiating in good faith - You can't have good faith if you make a term sheet on good faith and one side immediately backs out of whats on the term sheet.

2. No insults flung yet. Calling the Maloofs disingenuous is like calling the sky blue.

This is smart for the mayor to challenge the Maloofs in public. First of all, the Maloofs are taking this public, so the battlefield has been chosen. Second, KJ has nothing to lose and everything to gain. Either KJ knows the NBA is on his side, so he can embarrass the Maloofs a little bit now so they don't try to play this game in the future. Or, like you said, KJ will make this such a bad PR issue for the Maloofs and the NBA that they will be shamed into staying, or the NBA's reputation will be forever tarnished. What's the worse that can happen? The Maloofs will want to move the team? The already do. KJ and Stern are better politicians than the Maloofs. I think the Maloofs are playing a game that will cost them in the end, one way or another.

For those who didn't see it, the city council meeting tonight was basically one member after another ripping into the Maloofs in their own quiet way. The basic picture painted by council members, by Shirey, and by Dangberg (sans Sheedy and Sheedy's pet poodle), was that the Maloofs indeed have been in bad faith.

Ashby was the best. She said a lot without naming names or making it too obvious. In fact, I'm sure most of Ashby's comments went right over Sheedy's head, as Sheedy was still trying to figure out where the practice facility would be. ;)

She's gotta answer her emails ya know...

This really confirms the Maloofs, all three appear to have alterior motives and aren't, nor have they been honest, when I think most of us thought they were(aside from George) and were happy about the new deal. To have the city council members publicly speak out against them is going to make the BOG's meeting that much more interesting.

The only faulty component in all of this is the Maloofs.

I'll be totally honest - I'm willing to bet she can't even boot up her computer, let alone navigate the intricate world of cyberspace. 4 to 1 says her secretary reads all the emails and just prints the ones she thinks Sheedy might understand. In fact, the repetitive topic of the practice facility might be an indication of a sense of humor in said secretary since Sheedy doesn't seem to remember asking the same question before.

Nope, she reads the emails as they come in at the meeting. She's a puppet.
