Bee: Mark Kreidler: Finally, let's say goodbye to Divac

There's no easy way to say goodbye, which must be why Vlade Divac didn't do it. He just kept waving and waving and waving, and it wasn't until later that you realized it was the end.
Or, in the case of the Kings' front office, you didn't realize it.

Divac actually pulled a fast one this week, and if you saw the big man labor to get up and down the court in those final two seasons in Sacramento, you might have thought it impossible. But, perhaps unwittingly, Divac did it.

His retirement as a player? A done deal, expected by all.

His signing with the Lakers as a scout? A bit of a shock, Internet reports notwithstanding - and especially considering that as recently as two weeks ago Divac had told Kings executive Geoff Petrie that he wanted to lie low for a year, perhaps move his family to Europe for that time, then consider his future.

"In numerous conversations," Petrie said Wednesday, "he's consistently told me he was taking a year off. So it was (surprising) in the sense that it's a change from what I thought he might do."

And even then, in the wake of the Lakers news, the Kings - and, judging by Divac's overwhelming popularity here, a goodly chunk of the fan base - held out hope that this was just a make-good deal. Perhaps Divac scouting for the Lakers for a year was his way of compensating for the fact that they got so little out of his $7 million, two-season contract as a player because of his injuries.

He'd put in his time, give the Lakers a little return on investment. It would be a very Vlade thing to do. And then he'd be free to come back north, to the place that embraced him as, essentially, its own.

This just in: Missed it by that much.

"I signed (for) four years to scout," Divac said by phone from Los Angeles. "We're going to move to Europe next year, be there a couple of years and then come back."

You know what, then? This must really be the time to say goodbye.

Divac doesn't want to do it, of course. He won't disconnect from Sacramento. He has two restaurants here, and he is keeping them. He was here recently to put together an aid shipment for Hurricane Katrina victims, and Petrie spoke with him then.

"I'm going to be there next week, in fact," Divac said. "Just see some friends, Peja (Stojakovic) and others, and maybe if Kings are playing, stop by. Kings in Sacramento is always going to be kind of home for me."

It could have been a permanent home, but, as Kings fans have always known about their players, that has to be a two-way street. And as much as Divac enjoyed Sacramento, his first real place in the United States was Los Angeles, and his first NBA family the Lakers. In his own way, Divac already has gone home.

This all came about quickly, as things tend to do. Divac had long known, from both Petrie and owner Joe Maloof, that he had a job waiting for him with the Kings anytime he was ready to accept one. But when the Lakers bought out the second year of his player contract this month, they followed immediately with the four-year offer to scout.

For Divac, it was too good to pass up. He had wanted to move his family to Europe so they could experience the sensation of being a citizen of the world, as Vlade really always has been. The Lakers deal offered that ability. The Divac family will move to Madrid after the end of the school year next spring - "So we can all learn Spanish, which will come in handy, you know, when we come back to California," Vlade said with a chuckle.

It's too bad Divac didn't check in with Petrie, because the same kind of European offer might well have been extended to him by Sacramento. What the Kings want to establish here is some sort of legacy, and to do that they'd like to have the really well-liked, successful former players - like Vlade, exactly - on board in some capacity, be it ceremonial or genuinely productive.

That chance still might exist. Informed by a reporter of Divac's new deal with the Lakers, Joe Maloof, who was in Las Vegas on Wednesday, said, "Great guy. Love the guy. I wish him well. Anytime he wants to come back to Sac, we'd have a job for him, I know that." It won't be soon. Four years is an eternity in pro sports. Might as well say goodbye to the big lug now, from the city and team to which he really did matter - and, let's face, it, always will.

Is anybody as bothered about this as I am. I am not quite sure why I am bothered, but to hear that Vlade Divac has signed a 4 year deal with the Lakers just rubs me the wrong way.

I love Vlade and I think that he and Webber was the core of the Kings resurgance. And regardless if Vlade spent his first years in Los Angeles, his true NBA popularity and his riches (6 year, $60 million contract) started right here in Sacramento. And for him to allign himself with the Lakers long term and not even give the Maloofs an oportunity to utilize his talents, just does not sit right with me. :(

They drafted him at a time when international players were rarely drafted. Developed him. Gave him his first NBA contract, and his last one. And then they offered him the perfect job for what he wanted to do after retiring. Its not hard to see how/why he accepted.

I will always have respect for Divac , he is one of "big three" to put kings on the nba map . I wish him well in personal life , but not with the lakers !

Old school = divac, cwebb , jwill

New school = miller,peja,bibby

I was bothered at first, somewhat like a jilted lover.

Now, after reading Kreidler's article, I think Vlade did what he thought was best for his family and himself at this point in his career. The Lakers obviously made the offer and followed through.

Although Kreidler says "the same kind of European offer might well have been extended to him by Sacramento," I have to look back when Vlade was a free agent. The Kings made the choice - which I don't disagree with - to not match the LA offer and to let Vlade go. I have to believe that in Vlade's mind that might have been - for right or wrong - what he thought they would do again.

I wish him all the best and will always remember him as a member of THE KINGS TEAM that took my breath away.

I don't want to even think about it , that would be like my fav pitcher barry zito going to the yankees . NO PEJA !!!

Does Peja follow him down there at the end of this season?

They don't have the cap room. And really Peja is a bad fit for PJs offense anyway. The triangle requires POST players. And remember what happened when Glen Rice (who actually did have a bit of a post game) tried to fit in? Vlade should also, if his plan works out, be off in Europe that year anyway. So I don't really think of the Lakers as a significant threat unless they make some other moves.

Vlade tnx for everything. This is the end of one great carriere.I believe that Vlade will get standing ovation if he comes to see some Kings game next week!

I think you can take that to the bank.

And I would give just about anything to actually be there...

I will not let my hatred for the Lakers go. Never. Vlade is as good dead to me, considering he's going to scout for the Lakers and try to help them improve, he may be even less.

Vlade has done so much for Sacramento and it will always be a part of him. I could care less if he works for the Lakers or any where else.

I wish him the best of luck with his new career.

Vlade did more for the Kings than any other person. He was the first real FA that the Kings were able to lure to Sacramento and he had everything to do with the Kings becoming a top tier NBA team. However, I am a bit upset that he would sign on with the Lakers for 4 years. With that said, I will have a hard time seeing the Kings retire his jersey while he's employed by the Lakers. I have no problems with them retiring #21, but don't do it while Dr. Buss is signing his paycheck.

Altough rice didn't seem like a perfect "PJ" fit brick, he was deadly at bringing them back in games and I mean DEADLY! They'd be down by 9 and within a matter of a min he would hit like 3 threes all in transition basically and bring them back in the game. I had to live through those games being down here in LA and I hated it.

As for divac, I hate seen him helping the lakers. But it does seem like it fits in with what he's trying to do family wise. I think he'll end up in sacramento sometime in the future. I wish him the best of luck "family wise", but the lakers should DIE! Hahaha.

Interesting point. I generalyl figured there would be two times when retiring Vlade would make sense -- either 1) failry quickly, maybe even when he came to work for us; or 2) to wait for Webb to retire and retire them together (or money pressures being what they are, on back to back nights or some such). Maybe this decision by Vlde makes option 2) the more likely.

Sorry, kingsville, but the fact you didn't join until 1998 doesn't mean it didn't exist before you.

;)

Vlade did kind of lobby for job with Lakers for couple of months. It's not like he got an offer out of the blue that he couldn't refuse. His initial idea and a job he would have liked the most, was to work with young bigs. But than they got Jabar to do it, and gave Vlade peanuts, which is what scouting essentialy is.

In my opinion that was their big mistake. Jabar had plenty of time to prove himself as a couch and he didn't. He was bounced from one team to another as a scout and whatnot, at one point even couching a highschool team. Vlade on the other hand, have started developing young players while still a player, as we all know it. But it doesn't seem like they appreciate his skills very much down south.

Makes me wonder what have the Kings done to him so wrong, he didn't even try to get a job with them. But in his mind, as classy organization as Kings are nowdays, Lakers are an institution. They have history, championships and probably the largest fan base in the country.

Bye Vlade, always a joy watching you. Feel like he made a mistake leaving Sac, but in the end I'm not going to hold it against him for joining LA...instead I'll remember the great moments he had here. Such a shame that team never won a championship, they were certainly more memorable than any of the Spurs teams in the recent years who made their mark in history.

Great player and an even better person, long live Vlade Divac.

"For crying out loud, Vlade, DUNK THE BALL!!!" Sorry, just had one more in my system.

Goodbye to the best passing center I ever saw.

I will ALWAYS be gratful that Vlade was a KING. I am sad that he is not back with us, but I am not mad. He always said that it would be here or with the Lakers. It was the job he wanted and I wish him well.

Don't get too mad at him. We do not know what, or even if, the Maloofs offered hin in terms of a real job opportunity. Like somebody stated earlier, we didn't exactly roll out the red carpet for him money wise last year.

I will FOREVER think of him as the Patriarch of the modern era Kings.

Good luck Vlade and thanks for the memories!!!

I say Option 2, regardless of who employs Vlade. Once Webb retires, you retire #4 and #21 at the same time. If this team is to have tradition, those are the numbers that started it.
