Mark Cuban submitted app to buy Cubs

mark cuban trying to buy the cubs man i have to see this guy in baseball too! anyway how does the buying process work? is it like buying a home good credit, bad credit, highest bidder etc...?

The question is: Will he be in the luxury box? I don't know if Piniella would want him in the dugout sitting next to him. No one wants to see Cuban in a baseball uni...however, we've seen worse.

I imagine he'd learn to become a good dirt-kicker, if nothing else.

Do the Mavs actually make him money? Because if not all of these sports teams will eat through even a billionaire's money supply pretty damn quick -- $300 million here, $300 million there...a billion dollars just doesn't go as far as it used to. ;)

P.S. Anybody want to put any money down on the over/under until Cuban becomes the first baseball owner in history to come running onto the field to do the angry rooster chest bump thing with an umpire? :P

I'll set it at 9.5.

My call is over. Depends on who they play in the series, though.

Blech! Please, NO CUBAN! I like my Cubbies just the way they are! I can hardly stand watching him during basketball season; I know I wouldn't be able to do it for TWO sporting seasons (which is in essence a whole year).

Why do I get the feeling that the Cubs and Mark Cuban deserve each other? :p

Wash your mouth out, Steven.

Not my Cubbies. NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

Call me crazy, but I think he'd be good for the Cubs. I don't like him, but I think he'd do well in baseball. As long as he stays in the box.

So, am I the only one thinking that after the Mavericks swan dive in the playoffs Cuban has grown tired of them and is looking for something new to throw money at?

Ha! I just can't help but wonder what would have transpired if Cuban had been the owner for this...

The first owner to murder a fan?

Well dammit! He wants a championship and he's darn well going to buy himself one. ;)

I heard in an interview that he had been interested in baseball for a while. Wanted to buy the Pirates, but they weren't interested in selling.

Cube 'll be great in baseball, no salary cap or anything to worry about.

I totally agree...I've always thought he'd be great for baseball. It's about time MLB got a passionate, young owner to throw a curveball if you will to the 'good ole' boys' network of baseball owners. He would be a welcome addition to MLB.

He offered 1.3 bill in the first round. Noone else is even close. If owners approve him, Cubs are his. I hate Dallas and Cuban as much as any Kings fan. As a Cubs fan, season ticket holder or resident of Lakeview, I would LOVE, absolutely LOVE Cuban to buy the Cubs. This is the only time in the history of this franchise that team owners/amanagement invested big money on par with Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and Angels. I have to believe they're opening their wallets because they know they will never have to pay out those salaries from their profits/bonuses and historically Tribune owned Cubs signed only washed up veterans at the tail ends of their career (one exception being Sammy Sosa who made them millions to begin with). We're talking about an organization that is always in black ink, with healthy positive cash flow. The organization that effectively subsidized Tribune's other ventures like Comcast Sports (at the expense of the team as most of the games are not available nationally on the flagship WGN superstation). Not to mention that Tribune waited for pieces of concrete to start falling on people's heads as they were watching games before they spent some money on restorations. The list goes on and on.

On other hand, Cuban has demonstrated that he will spend money, and a degree of organizational excellence. Just ask Dallas fans. He will be getting a team with a huge payroll (all in last two years really), but a team that still turns healthy profit and Wrigly field that is a top tourist attraction. My ticket prices go up every year and yet they are still mere $7 more then parking in Wrigleyville (and about 4 times less then cheapest standing room only tix on stubhub) so there is a lots of headroom there. Price of modernizing and fixing Wrigley may scare off some bidders from pursuing the Cubs at all costs, but I am sure that Cuban realizes that Chicago and Illinois will do anything to keep the place open and attractive as it is a huge source of revenue. Not to mention that a whole economy surrounds the stadium and Chicago cannot afford to lose any more businesses to the county or suburbs (hence huge payoffs they made to attract Boing and for United to move downtown). Cuban will make money here and if he wins World Series with Cubs he will make tonnes of money.

He may be egotistical jerk, but he is definetly a sports fan too. No more soulles suits. And he will make Reinsdorff's head explode.

As much as I don't like Mark Cuban, I actually think he'd be good for the Cubs and for baseball in general. And I think if Selig stands in his way, it's time for him to be impeached and replaced by someone who knows how to run an American sports league.
