Maloofs would let Petrie interview for Blazers job if he wanted

Some months ago I said I was done with Petrie. Absolutely done. Well, I'm doing a switcheroony. I wasn't as convinced several months ago that the Maloofs were so financially encumbered; I believed they would spend a decent amount of money for the salary of the new GM. I'm just not convinced of that anymore. And if they don't have money, who are they going to hire instead of Petrie? Look at the long list of coaching failures over the last several years and then look at how much they were willing to pay. It's hard not to find a correlation there. So if you don't like the littany of coaching failures that we've had, just imagine what it could be like with a sequence of GM failures. It can always get worse. Much worse.

This sort of echo's my thoughts as well.

Though I'm still more in the Pro-Petrie camp, last off-season really hurt, especially with the loss of a lengthy defensive big next to Cousins, and the once again the lack of a full-sized SF who can play well in the starting line-up.

But given what the Maloofs are currently going through, I don't want anything to do with anyone they might consider bringing in, because if a new GM succeeded, it would probably be more by accident than by design.

I have to say this makes me nervous. I don't think these guys will own the team much longer and I'd like to see Petrie stay on as a steady hand to guide the team through a transition. I mean a lot of these guys (Cousins, Reke, IT, Jimmer, etc) are Petrie's players and I think it'd be best if he decides what to do with them, rather than a new GM who could come in and decide that Cousins is too much of a pain to deal with, or might not evaluate Tyreke correctly, or give up on Jimmer too soon, etc. I really think that if Petrie had access to more cash he would get us more shotblocking, shooting, and a better coach, but it's hard to do well with the guys we have as owners. On the other hand, it could be a sign the Maloofs aren't going to own the team much longer and have enough respect for Geoff that they'd let him explore other options incase a future owner wants to bring in their own GM? What do you all think?

Did I call this or what?

I know there's been much debate on this fourm as to whether Petrie has lost his magic touch, or have the Maloofs tied his hands because of finances. Most people will come down on whichever side suits their personal bias. I've personally thought it was a combination of both. His hands being tied, and as a result, he started reaching out of desperation to do something. I was reading the Q & A in the Bee, and one comment caught my eye, and although once again Petrie, the master of talking and saying nothing, did let his guard down a little on this answer.

Q: You didn't use the amnesty clause last season. Is that going to be something that is an option this offseason?

A: There's tremendous advantages to amnesty and you saw it this year. The main advantage is you get that money knocked off your cap and your (luxury) tax and that's not an issue for us. The main advantage is the ability to go out and spend it again. That's not something we've really had much discussion about, the second part of it. Just in it of itself, it just creates more room and less tax and if you're not going to spend the money again it doesn't make any difference.

I think we can safely say that the implication is, whats the point of using the amnesty clause, if were not going to spend the money it free's up. To me, its obvious that Petrie is limited in what he can do from a financial point of view. So instead of truely treating the cause, he's doing his best to put bandaids on the symptoms. Right now our best bet is to get lucky in the draft, because it doesn't look like were going to spend much money in freeagency.

Solid post and the bolded is exactly the phrase that came to mind. This is straight from Petrie and about as telling as anything he will say. He's made some mistakes to be sure, but had huge wins as well. Problem is he's not playing on a level playing field. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he is getting tired of having to do more with less

I think you also have to look back and ask why Dalembert was one of the last free agents on the entire market. Why did the Rockets attempt to sign Hayes after a failed physical before Dalembert? Why did the Rockets trade for a stop gap center to take Dalembert's starting spot?

Personally I think he has something wrong with his knee. Just a stab based on how he had knee problems during his year with the Kings but I don't see Dalembert as a malcontent. Could have been, never heard too much to support it though.

My bad. I wasn't insinuating that Daly was a problem; I was thinking more along the lines of various players having a serious lack of confidence in Paul Westphal. They might not have said anything publicly, but there were times during the year when you could just infer from the body language that they wished Westphal would either do things differently or just go away.

Very good on connecting of the dots. They just don't want to spend money. And we know Petrie already took a pay cut. My question is this: If Petrie goes or stays is that a sign of what is to come with the Maloofs? I would think that Petrie would very much like to see the seeds germinate with this team if he has the opportunity. But if he thinks he's going to be financially hamstrung on a treadmill going nowhere for the indefinite future, then it seems to me he'd look elsewhere if he still wanted to be in the business. So if he goes to another team, to me that is doubly bad - we lose him as a GM with a cheapo GM taking his place, and Petrie doesn't see a brighter financial future for the Kings anytime soon.

Hard to say what Petrie would do if he got another offer. As I stated in another post some time ago. I had the pleasure of sitting next to him at a couple of sacramento capitols games, and while we didnt talk much, or about basketball, I did get the impression he likes living in the sacramento area, as does his wife, who is involved in many non-basketball related activities. They have a nice home in the foothills, or at least they used to, and my gut tells me that he'd rather retire here than up and move. And, I agree, that he would like to retire, or leave, with the team on the rise.

Of course its all speculation as far as Petrie is concerned. The Maloof's are a different story. They say one thing, but just about everything they do says another. And that thing is, CHEAP! Obviously the more season tickets they sell, the more money they make. So to that end, they'll say anything. Its a sad dilemma.

In other words, the Maloofs would save money if they could. If Petrie wants to leave, so be it (to them). They'll then just hire some nobody for really cheap.

This gets back to my bit about Petrie not making big mistakes in the draft. It's the devil you know thing. With the draft really only being the one way to improve the team, Petrie has proven competent. There are any number of cheap GMs who could make those big draft mistakes and I don't think it's worth the gamble when the chance of improving the GM position is pretty slim odds on the pay scale we have to deal with. Good young draft picks have somewhat of a chance out outliving the cheap *** Maloofs.

Face it fans, the mode we have to live in under the Maloofs is more about minimizing damage than building for the future. Welcome to looking at the Kings under Dollar Store ownership.

The one move that would immediately improve this team is changing ownership. I detest the Maloofs. They are just hanging on to a dream they clearly can't afford. Since the Kings peak salary year of 02/03, its been steadily dowhill to the lowest payroll in the league. Petrie has really had the crappy job of having to cut salary every year. Not only that, but he has utter bozos for bosses. Its amazing he has stayed in Sacramento.

Let's face it. The Maloofs are not going to spend for a really good GM, so I'll stick with GP, thank you, and hope he doesn't desert us.

+1. This slash and burn approach to team ownership is sickening.

If Petrie was let go because there was a better candidate available, I'm open to it as I think his record has been spotty at best recently. If he's let go just because they can get someone cheaper, that would be another nail in the organization's coffin

Another nail? It's gonna be hard to find a spot to put another nail.

I hate to be a pessimist, but pretty much every aspect of organizational decision making is going to be driven by saving a buck and cutting a corner. It's going to infect everything. If we happen to get lucky and win the lottery, how do you think Davis is going to react when his agent fills him in on the Kings current situation? He's a good kid and I don't expect him to balk in public... but he's got to be thinking to himself that he's headed into a bad situation.

He's going to think..."I'm going to go in there and turn that team around. PERIOD!" ;)

Improved Cuz/Davis/some new starting SF/Improved Evans/Thornton = playoff chase. Davis get ROY.

Then Maloof let Evans walk because resigning him would be too much. Kings fans demand new owners with actual pitch forks and torches. :)

Thornton at Point guard? lolwut?

Right! George just said we have a very good core right now. GM? I keep trying to think of optimistic ways of looking at things but it is really challenging right now. How is this Maloof behavior, if continued, going to effect the value of the team? Is there any excuse for a smidgeon of optimism? Help!!!!

It could well be that since the Maloofs have essentially hocked the their entire equity in the team that the lenders (the real owners) These guys:
Pawn-Stars.jpg

Want to put their guy in charge:

Meet our new GM Chumlee!

Watch... Petrie will leave; George will take over GM duties....

That would just about seal it for me as a Kings fan!

Not because I love Petrie (I think he has made his fair share of **** ups and I am open to improving at that position) but because I cannot stand our ownership cutting costs and mingling into something that they are just not qualified to do. PERIOD!

Dont be ridiculous...They're guards that can played together. There's no PG with that line up and we don't need one either.

That's not true IMO. Need a distributor to give the ball to Cousins and Davis. Reke at his best as a SG, so is Thornton. Either Thornton's gotta be a 6th man or something because you can't start them together and expect to score points.

well given his work circumstances, operating with his hands tied he'd be nuts not to contemplate leaving.

I would have great respect for him if his love of the region, the fans, the team and finishing what he built kept him here. However he'd have to question if we will get new owners.

A few blogs on sacbee mention hes going about his work as per normal which i respect.

I just hope that if he stays the maloofs dont force him out when its contract extension time.

Id go to ARCO and spend the money on courtside seats and walk on with a banner half way through the 1st

They let Adelman go with no problem all in the name of 'getting their guy'...I think this will happen with Petrie too...say hello to our new GM:
