I think if the Maloofs were smart, they would have let the city know they were in negotiations with Anaheim. That would have given both cities the opportunity to compete with each other over a period of time and the Maloofs get the best possible deal.
Finally, I'd say that perhaps they chose not to be more public with their dealings with Anaheim is that they thought it would affect attendance. In reality, attendance has gone up since the news of the Anaheim deal.
This seems the FAR more likely reason. All of this master plan/manipulation the Maloofs are being accused of now is really pretty comical.
A master plan this ain't.

They've lost almost all of their credibility in both Sacto and amongst the owners, to the point people are calling them kids and pressring them to leave the big boys club and go bacl to theri sandbox.

Spencer Hawes tweeting for the Sonics fans who are behind the OKC bench rooting against them right now, with cowbells btw, and he adds Sacramento in it..
No, no. It's the SonicsGate guys. http://twitter.com/#!/Sonicsgate

On the other hand we absolutely know they are in financial distress, and now as well that in places like Seattle when the team was as good as gone the arena emptied out, thus speeding/easing the demise. I was sincerely worried that would happen in Sacto, I'm sure so were our financialy strained owners. So you keep it secret and try to sneak away in the middle of the night to get the best deal you can. You will recall that it was not the Maloofs who finally broke that story back at the All Star break either. If it was up to them, they might very well have kept it quiet right up until the end of the season, went to the BOG, got their release, and been gone. As its played out, other people are determining thier fate now, dictating to them their terms. They've lost almost all of their credibility in both Sacto and amongst the owners, to the point people are calling them kids and pressing them to leave the big boys club and go back to their sandbox. Are they rooting for or against the Thunder. It appeared to be for.
So did Stern intentially mention the Anaheim deal all-star weekend to see if Sacto would rise up? Was that calcuated on his part?
Against. They are rooting for the Nuggets with Sonics signs and Cowbells.
....... or maybe by Sterns himself, but who cares if they stay. For all the criticism of the Maloofs, if you think about it, this is probably going to be the best possible outcome for them and their business. They're finally going to get the new arena in Sac that they've been trying for for years (if you believe that), they'll nearly double their TV contract, they've got another 10mil in sponsorhip/ticket revenue, and the situation they're "coming back" to in Sac is far better than being under the wing of a vulturous landlord/business partner in a risky and unproven market.
If you set grudges and feelings aside, from a purely economic and business point of view, this was BRILLIANTLY played by the Maloofs as a way to finally mobilize the region the get an arena and they'll get a new tv deal, and have an even more fervent fan following than before. Now, hopefully they can just say the right things and make a re-entry fairly smooth. From the most recent quotes in the yahoo article, it seems they are actually capable of making the correct conciliatory remarks-- whether those remarks will get published by the Bee is another story.
I suspect though, that there will always be people who won't "forgive" them (as if they somehow didn't have the right to explore their options--sheesh). But I guess that's what comes when you have such emotionally invested fans. The good with the bad.
I do seriously think that this may have been a ploy, possibly cooked up by George, to finally grease the wheels in Sac and get things moving faster in the direction of a new arena.
What if Hawes gets traded to the Thunder?
Talk about awkward.
Plain and simple I think the Maloofs felt like they had exhausted their options in Sacramento and felt like the grass was greener in Anaheim. That said I have to believe that someone in their organization must have speculated there might be a remote possibility that Sacramento would try to entice them to stay. If they were in fact losing money in Sac and felt they could lock in a deal that could turn a profit somewhere else, they had nothing to lose by moving. As a business owner I would certainly feel bad about leaving my loyal customers but I’m no good to anybody, especially myself, if I go out of business. KJ responded to the threat of the Kings moving so the Maloofs inadvertently created more options for themselves. The NBA has a say in the matter so the Maloofs may not have complete control of their destiny but they at least have more options than they did before they started talking to Anaheim.
Well, they did trade for Nate Robinson, who did not seem all that pleased.
Look at the Palms pre-2006 expansion. They were geniuses in turning a modest off strip property into a desert hot spot. They spent somewhere between 1/4 and 1/6 of the typical new build and were attracting locals and celebrities alike. They had the hottest club in town for a while. That doesn't happen by accident.Uhh, yeah, I have a hard time believing the Maloofs are anything more than mickey-mouse businessmen. How anyone can look at their entire body of work and think that they're smart entrepreneurs is beyond me.
