looks like Keith McLeod

Payton And Boykins Too Rich For Sacramento's Blood?October 29, 2007 - 11:38 am
Sacramento Bee -

It appears unlikely either Gary Payton or Earl Boykins is headed Sacramento's way.

Because the Kings are over the salary cap and out of exceptions, they can offer only the minimum salary. A league source said the Kings inquired about Boykins and that he would not accept the minimum, and it's unclear whether there is interest from either side regarding Payton. There have, however, been discussions about unemployed point guard Keith McLeod, a five-year veteran who has started 88 of his 200 games and averaged 18.6 minutes per game for four teams (Indiana last season).

It is hardly a done deal as the title to the thread inplies. The rest of the PG discussion in that article is this:

That is, of course, unless Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie can find more help elsewhere. One option opens up today, as there is a 5 p.m. EDT deadline for teams to finalize their regular-season rosters, and the Kings could browse the waiver wire for point guards.

Third-year Houston point guard John Lucas III is expected to be waived. And although the Rockets have four cuts to make to bring their roster to the league limit of 15, it's highly unlikely anyone in the backcourt stable of Rafer Alston, Mike James, Luther Head, Aaron Brooks and Steve Francis will be cut.

Francis, 30, is out of the rotation and unhappy with his role, but he is in the first year of a guaranteed two-year contract (player option for the 2008-09 season) worth $5.07 million. He could come the Kings' way only if the Rockets cut and paid him or via trade.

I, for one, hope it's not McLeod. He's a shoot-first PG who can't shoot, and clearly is a fringe NBA player at best in a league full of masquerading undersized shooting guards. If he would tone his game down and not approach with a full head of steam, I actually think he can be a nice combo guard--one who can shoot a bit, one who can drive and dish and get the guys in the flow. But he seems to be a shot-happy, bad decision making PG characteristic of many out of leaguers. He just doesn't seem right.

The best PG we can get is out of trade. 14 ppg and 5 apg Boykins may still be available, but we need a defensive passing PG as opposed to a short score-first one. Payton's over the hill, and should be a veteran option at this point as opposed to temporary starter IMO. Everyone else in the free agency list is a fringe NBA player, seemingly, and even if some might be diamonds in the rough, we have to pick someone who truly fits the team first.

As for Boykins how bad could he be? He beats up on Bibby when ever they go head to head. His defense can't be any worse than Bibby's.. too bad he wont accept minimum. I am surprised he's not signed as we speak.

I still think that Keith McLeod looks like the real life version of the cartoon drawing of Ringo Starr in Yellow Submarine.

Which has nothing to do with anything other than the fact its the first thing that pops into my head whenever I hear McLeod's name.

Carry on.

Yep, in terms of free agent talent, Beno could be a solid fit for us. Fundamentally sound, do-nothing-wrong type of player who can hit the mid-range J and three pointer at very a nice clip, and could move the ball within the motion offense. However, don't expect him to go out of his comfort zone though; he's one of those players who knows his strengths, plays within them and such, but I have to wonder that, despite his 6'4"ish height, whether he lacks the athleticism and first step to become a better defensive player against quicker guards. He's a good stopgap insurance for now though nonetheless and could be a nice backup to Bibby. Purely a role player though, but hey--he came from the champion Spurs--you can't expect any more than that.

P.S. Brick, it did happen: http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archi...rade_udrih_to_wolves_for_2nd_round_2008_pick/

People in San Antonio hated him. Expect Marko Jaric like garbage. But the Wolves have nothing to lose

I can't speak for the Spurs, as I'm no fan of the team, but I do remember that Beno had a solid rookie season in which he arguably made a surprise impact for them off the bench. But his novelty wore out because he hit his peak in rookie year; he's an NBA-ready guy with little potential, and a known entity in that we know that he can hit shots, provide solid defense against slower guards, etc. He put relatively same numbers in the same minutes I believe for the Spurs, and in a team lacking athleticism, speed and such, Beno was a carbon copy of many of their other players. It's easy to see why he can be in a doghouse for that team, and he simply needs a change of scenery. Maybe with more minutes, he can deem himself more useful.

As for Jaric, he was pretty good as a Clipper, and again...it's a solid player in a bad situation. Happened to Troy Hudson in Minny. Frequently happens to all those talents in the cesspool that is the New York Knicks. It's unfortunate how the league is based on contracts, and because many GMs are turned off by fat contracts on undeserving players who receive little playing time, Jaric is in a lose-lose situation, despite being versatile, having the ability to hit the open shot and playing nice off-the-ball D. He's already had an impact in the league, but I digress.
