London: Final Thoughts and Pictures

Final Thoughts

It’s Wednesday night and I’m sitting in the computer lab getting ready for finals. I can’t help to think about when I’ll be back in Sacramento, exhausted, and wondering where the time went. My time in London has been anything from predictable. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that the past 4 ½ months have been the exact opposite of what I expected. What did I expect? Well, it’s hard to not anticipate the gates of heaven opening up when every person tells you “you’re going to have the time of your life,” prior to departure. Did I have the time of my life? Not in the way that others describe. I think most of my friends said that because they went at a much younger age and had not travelled/lived in a foreign culture before. On the other hand, I had already experienced my freshman year in both Savannah and New York, and quite honestly Savannah is almost if not more different than London is to America. Although I didn’t have the time of my life that I anticipated, I probably learn more and saw more than any of my other friends, and for that reason I love London.

It’s true when they say you find out who you are while abroad. I learned that I need to be true to myself, because in all honesty, my first choice was Australia – I let my friends talk me into London. Regardless, in the end London will be better for my career. I imagine it’s more impressive to say I studied in London rather than partied in Australia. In addition, London’s profoundly influenced my advertising/film career, which is something I feel I could not learn in Australia.

Though I’m sad I missed out on Australia, I know this is only the beginning of my travel experiences. For starters, I’m already saving up for a post-graduation summer in Australia. More importantly though is that as our world turns more interdependent, my generations version of “The NY City weekend business trip” will soon be the “Europe week trip”. This, more than anything, is why I went abroad, and I think this trip has given me a clear advantage over those I’ll be competing with in my generation.

In conclusion, this trip was exactly what I needed and I’m forever grateful and blessed that I had such an opportunity. I’ve travelled to Scotland, Wales, Prague, Germany, Belgium and Paris – and tried to pick up as much culture on the way. In the words of my father “Because of the places you’ve seen, the food you’ve eaten, and the friends you made, you will always be a part of London and London will always be a part of you.”

What a trip! Back in Sacramento this Saturday. Enjoy the pictures!

Royal Albert Hall and monument to the man himself. This was a good 10 minute walk from my dorm

Good old Fish n’ Chips – made with Cod. Yeah, not the greatest thing in the world…

The Rosetta Stone – arguably the most important ancient Egyptian artefact we’ve discovered. This is the British Museums pride and joy.

Just in case anyone wonders where the word “Sh*t” comes from.

View of the Tower Bridge from top of “The Monument”. It was made to commemorate the great fire of 1666.

I’ve been to many famous cathedrals around Europe, and St. Paul’s is by far my favourite.

Re-construction of the famous Globe Theatre used by Shakespeare. This is actually an unbelievably accurate copy. When they built it, they only used the tools that were available during the time of the original Globe Theatre.

The official Christmas light ceremony on Oxford Street (they turned the lights on with one switch). All Saints came to start the countdown.

My family came to visit me. Here we are in front of Buckingham. As we were walking back, a few police cars stopped all traffic and what do you know, a black car with a small old woman wearing a gaudy green suit and hat drove by….it was the Queen!!

These were part of the Parthenon freeze from Greece. They were taken and preserved by some Lord of London back in the day. Greece wants them back, and to this day they are still at war over the possession rights. It’s a long but interesting story.

This is an exact copy of Michelangelo’s “David” in the Victoria & Albert museum (by far my favourite in London).

Thank you so much, Ryan! Your pictures are wonderful. And you're right. You'll definitely carry part of London with you always. Especially since you're now using their spelling for some of your "favourite" words.

;)

I know you've chosen film as your career path, but you have an incredible eye for photography. I don't know about anyone else, but I have truly enjoyed seeing parts of Europe through your eyes.

Now, if I may, can I request that you visit Egypt? I have wanted to walk through the Valley of the Kings all of my life. I know if you went, the pictures you took would put me right there.

Thanks again!

I'm glad you enjoy your time in London. I was fortunate to study and work there for 10 years. I still miss living there. I did'nt truly appreciate it fully until I left. I took the place for granted.

I know. Like neighbour, colour, etc. That's why I was kidding you... ;)

And yes, I would Love to visit Egypt.

Okay, I'll make you a deal. If I ever win one of the big prizes in the Calif. lottery, I'll pay for your trip to Egypt provided you do a photo/film diary of your journey.

:D

Ryan, you are not the only one to have experienced London (and various parts of Europe) these past 4 1/2 months. Because of your gift of photography to us, Kings fans from around the world have been fortunate to have shared in your experience. We thank you, kind sir.

Its obvious that you had a marvelous time. And I have had a marvelous time seeing your wonderful pictures and reading what you've written here. Thank you for taking the time. :D
