Final Thoughts
It’s Wednesday night and I’m sitting in the computer lab getting ready for finals. I can’t help to think about when I’ll be back in Sacramento, exhausted, and wondering where the time went. My time in London has been anything from predictable. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that the past 4 ½ months have been the exact opposite of what I expected. What did I expect? Well, it’s hard to not anticipate the gates of heaven opening up when every person tells you “you’re going to have the time of your life,” prior to departure. Did I have the time of my life? Not in the way that others describe. I think most of my friends said that because they went at a much younger age and had not travelled/lived in a foreign culture before. On the other hand, I had already experienced my freshman year in both Savannah and New York, and quite honestly Savannah is almost if not more different than London is to America. Although I didn’t have the time of my life that I anticipated, I probably learn more and saw more than any of my other friends, and for that reason I love London.
It’s true when they say you find out who you are while abroad. I learned that I need to be true to myself, because in all honesty, my first choice was Australia – I let my friends talk me into London. Regardless, in the end London will be better for my career. I imagine it’s more impressive to say I studied in London rather than partied in Australia. In addition, London’s profoundly influenced my advertising/film career, which is something I feel I could not learn in Australia.
Though I’m sad I missed out on Australia, I know this is only the beginning of my travel experiences. For starters, I’m already saving up for a post-graduation summer in Australia. More importantly though is that as our world turns more interdependent, my generations version of “The NY City weekend business trip” will soon be the “Europe week trip”. This, more than anything, is why I went abroad, and I think this trip has given me a clear advantage over those I’ll be competing with in my generation.
In conclusion, this trip was exactly what I needed and I’m forever grateful and blessed that I had such an opportunity. I’ve travelled to Scotland, Wales, Prague, Germany, Belgium and Paris – and tried to pick up as much culture on the way. In the words of my father “Because of the places you’ve seen, the food you’ve eaten, and the friends you made, you will always be a part of London and London will always be a part of you.”
What a trip! Back in Sacramento this Saturday. Enjoy the pictures!
