Let's say for whatever reason (even though it won't happen) that the Kings come back next year with exactly the same roster as game 5 against the Sonics. Everyone is healthy, Greg-O is in shape, and they've "got the training camp under their belts." How good are we as a team? How far could we expect to get? and who would you play?

1. How good are we as a team? Good enough not to stink up the court, but nowhere near good enough to be truly competitive against the elite in the West.
2. How far could we expect to get? Second round at the very best, depending upon seedings.
3. PG - Bibby, OG - Cat, SF - Peja, PF - Thomas, C - Miller

One problem you've created by making our team exactly the same as it was in game 5 against the Sonics is that we wouldn't be able to use Kevin Martin.

Basically the same. Maybe the 6th or 7th seed. Out in game 6 or 7 of the first round. Maybe win the first round and out quickly in the second.

8th maybe 7th seed team depending on how the Lakers, Wolves and Grizzlies rebuild. If they all rebuild well then we dont have a shot at the playoffs. We will average around 100 maybe a little less and will win between 35-40.

BUT... thats assuming we play like we played this year. If Brad comes back healthy and dominates, if bibby becomes himself again and not what we saw in the playoffs and if we get the Peja that we saw in 03-04 before Webber returned then we will be in the playoffs and will be fighting for best record in league. All depends on how our bench improves as long as our starters can step up and carry us. I think it will be an interesting test of heart next season and we know our players have plenty of that so I wonder how far it can take us.

I've already tried this on a computer sim.

We go 22-8 to open as long as you have a coach willing to play our big defensive players over our small skill guys (significant minutes for Tag at C, Skinner at PF, and Mo at OG). Then Peja and Bibby and BJax get injured and we lose 5 of 6. Then because we're a boring squad with no upward potential the front office decides to take advantage of the computer's weak trading A.I. and manages to cash in nearly the entire roster except Bibby, Bobby and Mo, throw in several first round picks, and brings back KG, Artest (underrated in the game) and Pierce to form the baddest *** team since the '96 Bulls.


In real life this same team might win 50, but with no chance to ever win more. Thrown together at the end of the year with injuries they were barely .500 and got spanked in the playoffs. Figure organized and together they can win 50 (but for year long mediocrity rather than a .500 team living off of a different team's fast start) grab the 6th seed again and probably put up a better fight in Round 1.

Agreed. Who would you replace on the roster for Kevin?

Kevin wasn't on the playoff roster. He was replaced by House (needed because of Jackson's injury). Ostertag could have been left off the roster instead had Miller not also been returning from injury.

I was really pleased with how house played since getting picked up. I would sit tag, but then that would only leave us with Brad as a genuine big guy. Uh oh.

I have no idea. I don't play retro-what if because I've learned over the years it does no good to try and relive the past. It's over, you learn from it and move on.

The team you're talking about doesn't exist any more. And I'm frankly kind of glad about that. I'm looking forward to seeing what Petrie can do with the pieces he's been handed ... and the ones he manages to steal from other GM's stacks when they aren't paying attention.

I have confidence in Petrie that either thru FA or Draft we will pick up a talented SF and Center. I think Brad should play PF instead of center. He would abuse most PF in the league. But we need a shot block center to fill the lane. I think with that addition within 2 to 3 years the Kings would be contenders

Actually, FA and Draft are the two least likely ways of improving the Kings. Our draft pick most likely won't be a true impact player and we cannot offer one of the really good FAs much in the way of money because we are STILL over the salary cap.

Our best chance is in trades. Petrie is really going to have to work some magic - and that's assuming the other GMs in the league want any of the players we have left to trade. Most likely scenario is that at least one more core player (Bibby, Peja, Miller) will have to go to bring back true value and, of those three, Peja is the most marketable.

This is no longer a team that just needs a little tweaking. It is a team in major rebuild mode.
