LeBron James blasts Charles Barkley

When people speculate about where you might end up, just say you are proud to play for the Cavs fans and that's all that matters right now. See isn't that easy?
Honest question... can you find a quote where says something different?

The one in this thread is talking about the whole free-agent class. In other words, he's deflecting the question by not saying anything about what he is or isn't going to do.

Ever since this LeBron free agency talk started I've had one question on my mind which has puzzled me.

It is clear that LeBron will get max contract offers in 2010, and Cleveland would have to match that, but can't Cleveland offer him similar type of contract right now ?

If that's the case, don't the Cavaliers already know whether LeBron will stay in Cleveland? If LeBron doesn't want to sign a new contract, is there any reason why Cavaliers shouldn't try to trade him before his contract expires and get some value for him instead of just letting him walk away for nothing? (similar happened when Pedja was traded for Artest).

So from the Cavaliers perspective, either he will stay in Cleveland or they should trade him. Is there anything here that I'm missing ?

As I recall the reason this whole 2010 bounty crop of FAs was created was that either the CBA was coming up for renegotiation in 2010, or the TV contracts, or something, so that agents were/are anticipating that their clients could get better terms on a contract signed after 2010 then one signed now. So LeBron, Wade, Bosh etc. all intentionally signed deals for shorter than they otherwise could have -- 4 years I think it was, or maybe 3 -- know ing that as superstars they were all going to get paid the max anyway, and assuming that if they timed their deals to end in 2010 then the new deals they signed in 2010 would give them more money per year than they would have gotten just signing for max money/max years in 2006 (or whenever).

I Don't see what Michael Jordan has to do with this at all

If you're going to quote me on this comment and ask what Michael Jordan has to do with this, make sure to copy the entire post on this one.

That's what Michael Jordan has to do with this. Lebron James is a Michael Jordan type player. He's a game changer. He's a one of a kind player. Only a couple of these players come around every generation. The type of player that can put a team on their back and say, "Hold on!". Right now there is Kobe and Lebron.

Early in Jordans career people said the EXACT same thing about him. That he didn't have a jumpshot and would have to rely on his athleticism. Which was some what true. But, as he developed he developed a mid-range and longrange game, and became a very good defender.

Some facts Cavaliers fans and other wishful NBA fans:

  • NBA collective bargaining agreement permit the Cavs to exceed the salary cap to sign James.
  • Cavs can sign James for six years while others can sign him for five.
  • Based on a projected $64 million salary cap, James could sign with the Cavs for about $133 million in 2010. Other teams could sign him for roughly $102 million.
  • The Cavs can give Lebron 10.5 percent raise per year; other teams can offer 8 percent raises.

According to this the Cavs can offer Bron $33 million more over the life of the contract.

I'm assuming that the Cavaliers have a standing offer that James can have a max extension whenever he wants it and that it is James who has chosen to wait until free agency to test the waters. When the summer of 2010 gets closer and he actually starts to think more seriously about what he wants to do, he might decide to sign on then (if he's allowed by the CBA) but I doubt he's going to agree to an extension much before then. Maybe if the Cavs win the championship this year he could, but even then I doubt it.

But once once he hits free agency there is still a very good chance that he'll sign with Cleveland again, so it wouldn't make sense to try to trade him. Only if they were 90% sure that he was going to leave should they even consider the notion. Can you imagine trading away LeBron James when there's a chance you could have kept him for 6 more years?

So, basically, when Lebron said that 2010 is going to be the biggest FA in NBA history he was right and it wasn't the case of him being egomaniac (implying that it is huge FA year because of him)?

Thought so. The guy is too talented and too smart and 2010 is too big for him to just tow the line and spout canned, vanilla answers.

He's been like that since we've met him, it's just now starting to hit a crescendo. Bron was probably being praised and coddled from all angles before he hit puberty. That's gotta rot certain parts of your personality.

Oh, please. We're discussing Lebron James, not Kobe. Being rotten is the only thing that Kobe is still better at then Lebron.

Well, then I can dream that, due to the poor economy, the new CBA isn't as lucrative and they all get screwed a few million? :p
