Larry Sanders: Why I walked away from the NBA

Yeah, good for him. Some things are more important than basketball. Hopefully he's happy in whatever he does, and I'm sure he'll be back in the NBA some day.

wow. larry sanders has risen considerably in my estimation. i've previously characterized him as an immature knucklehead without a clue, but this video shows him to be a rather thoughtful individual who's just trying to do right by his health and sanity. his outspoken pro-cannabis stance is also now more properly contextualized, and his comments about being "more than just one thing" struck me as truly candid and sincere. i mean, dude left $20 million on the table bravely and voluntarily, all in pursuit of a lifestyle that will be better for his mental health. color me impressed...

Great piece. By in large, the media reports have made him out to be a "less than decent" person. When I hear him speak, it's obvious that he's nothing of the sort. Seems like one of the more down to earth guys around

Yeah, pursuing his dreams while taking millions in a buyout as a severance package.

Straight from the corporate CEO handbook. Don't hate the player . . .

Always hard to keep in mind that even as huge fans of a team we're only getting a small part of the picture of who someone is as a person. And when it comes to guys on other teams? By and large it's just a flash card in my mind with some judgements gleaned from media reports.

He ain't quite a CEO. :)

And critically he wasn't fired, he walked away to go walkabout. His choice. And he wanted to still be paid for it.

In any case what he really is is a legalized thief. He played about 4 months of good basketball, which 99% of the planet plays for free, fooled a franchise into giving him an egregious contract, and then basically freaked out and decided he didn't want to play basketball anymore, and really why should he? He played 50 games combined in the two years before quitting, and walked away with a cool 18.2mil for his trouble. Even got himself on the lottery 7 year payout plan to make sure he doesn't begin his future life as a crazy streetperson until 2021 at the earliest. If somebody responsible could just be appointed his legal guardian that should be more than enough money to keep him in weed and videogames for another 50 years.
