Larry Brown's assistant joins Sacramento!

Larry's assistant joins Kings

The Sacramento Kings never made a play for Larry Brown - much to the dismay of James Dolan and Isiah Thomas - but one of Brown's assistants is headed west.
Brendan O'Connor is leaving the Knicks to join Eric Musselman's staff in Sacramento, according to a league source. For O'Connor, who also worked for Brown in Detroit, the move is regarded as a promotion. He was the fourth assistant with the Knicks and sat behind the bench. He will now become one of Musselman's top assistants with the Kings. Brown would have encouraged O'Connor to take the job even if he was assured of returning as Knicks coach. But with Brown likely to be replaced, the move was a logical one for O'Connor, who had three years left on his Knicks contract. Phil Ford and Dave Hanners, whom Brown hired last summer, remain on his staff.

Am I supposed to be excited that we brought a guy that was lowest on the totem pole with Brown, and that the Kings are going to make him a right hand man??

Depends how old he is. If he's quite young then maybe he just never had the oppurtunity or time to go higher in the "totem pole". Everyone's gotta start somewhere you know. I don't care what he did in the past, if he knows his stuff(which we don't) i'm more than happy to have him as one of our assistants.

He's young and he worked with Musselman in the minor leagues.

Here's the press releae when the Kincks hired him:

Brendan O’Connor Added as Assistant Coach

NEW YORK, October 3, 2005 – New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Isiah Thomas announced today that Brendan O’Connor will be joining Head Coach Larry Brown’s staff as an assistant coach. He joins Mark Aguirre, Phil Ford, George Glymph, Dave Hanners, Herb Williams and Greg Brittenham.
With five years of NBA coaching and scouting experience, the New Hampshire-native has been reunited with Brown after two seasons on the Hall-of-Famer’s staff on Detroit’s NBA Championship team in 2004 and Eastern Conference Championship team in 2005.

O’Connor started his NBA career with the Pistons as an advance scout in 2000, and was then promoted to assistant coach/advance scout in July of 2002.

Prior to his days in Michigan, O’Connor has a long and impressive resume of coaching experience in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), United States Basketball League (USBL) and International Basketball League (IBL). Assisting Eric Musselman with the Florida Sharks of the USBL in 1995 and 1996, the Sharks won the league’s championship both seasons. He also teamed with Musselman at the Florida Beachdogs of the CBA in 1995-96 and 1996-97. O’Connor was an assistant coach/director of player personnel with both the Grand Rapids Hoops (1997-99) of the CBA and Richmond Rhythm (1999-2000) of the IBL.

Well damn. I am impressed. A glorified scout.

Nonetheless, depends on how far down the bench he is I suppose. Everybody has to start somewhere.

Muss and now his staff -- for some reason it kind of reminds me in feel of the JFK era "best & the brightest". Young, smart, idealistic, inexperienced, full of hubris. Maybe it works. But maybe it would have been helpful to have, and accept, a wise old experienced hand as part of the team as well.

I feel you on this. It seems to mee the Muss is gathering a group of "Young Turks" gues he has discused new ideas with and now it's thier time to give it a try. It could well be we will see some innovation right in Sacramento. Of course it could also be we are aobut to wathc some youg pups get slaped into their place by old pros... time will tell.

How do you define experience? Would T.R. Dunn qualify?

;)

Well, it was my opinion he should surround himself with experienced talent. Guess that shows what I know ;) So far, it looks like we are going in a different direction. No doubt it should be interesting.

• New Sacramento Kings coach Eric Musselman recently asked the Cavs for permission to speak with assistant coach Kenny Natt, a holdover from Paul Silas' staff who didn't seem to have the same chemistry with Mike Brown as the rest of his staff did last season. Yet Brown didn't want to lose Natt, and according to peers in the coaching community, the two got together recently and had a positive meeting that convinced Natt to stay. There are no signs of Brown adding to his staff. The organization seems confident Brown and his current assistants can improve the offense.

Kenny Natt
College - Northeast Louisiana
Kenny Natt is beginning his second season as an Assistant Coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Natt has spent the last 25 years working in all facets of professional basketball from player to coach.

Natt joins the Cavaliers after spending the previous nine seasons on Jerry Sloan’s staff with the Utah Jazz. He was responsible for working with the teams’ frontcourt players along with game preparations for upcoming opponents. He was a member of the coaching staff that led the Jazz to the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons in Utah. Natt was on the bench as the Jazz made runs to the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998.

Prior to his work on the Utah coaching staff, Natt spent two seasons as a scout for the Jazz and as an assistant coach at Youngstown State. He also held positions as an assistant coach for the CBA’s Columbus Horizon, as a head coach for Cape Breton in the Canadian-based National Basketball League and as the player personnel director and scout for the World Basketball League.

Natt was drafted by the Indiana Pacers with the 30th selection in the 1980 NBA Draft. He spent three years in the NBA playing for the Pacers, Jazz and Kansas City Kings. During his career, he played for six CBA teams before finishing his playing career with Fresno and Youngstown of the World Basketball League.

Natt is a 1980 graduate of Northeast Louisiana University (now Louisiana-Monroe) with a degree in Business Administration. He was a four-year member of the basketball team, pairing up with his younger brother, Calvin, to lead the Indians. He averaged 20.1 points and 3.5 rebounds while earning All-Trans America Conference honors his senior season.

Kenny and his wife, Jolene, are the parents of two daughters, Ki’Essence and Yazmine.

Welcome Tha Rizzock.

I love to watch SPDL...its entertaining and it doesnt cost much. My old AAU coach played last year (Damond Edwards) and I was coached my Monty Buckley too. If you want to get your kids good AAU coaches, those two are the ones you want. Watching Mike and Bobby,,,I think last year was fun
