Lakers discussion

Here's a stat. LA's lowest final score of the season so far is 89 pts against Detroit (w/o Bynum or Gasol). That's the highest low total for them since 1987. Their lowest final score since the Gasol trade (20 gms) is 95 pts.

Hrm.

Where's Futuristic? Shame he only shows up when Kobe isn't kicked out of games.

;)

Boy I wish I had some graphic abilities. The image of Kobe's head on Linda Blair's body in the spinning head/spewing vomit scene would be beyond priceless.

I think he would actually throw a ref down a flight of stairs if he could.

Hmmm...

Let me think...

Nope, the graphic imagery just isn't the same.

It's head-spinning, vomit-spewing or nothing. Sorry.

My idea could work. A ref has Kobe by the collar slapping him, demanding that the demonic spirits that Rasheed Wallace initially transferred to Kobe be transferred to the ref. Ref says, "COME INTO ME!!!" Then the ref's eyes turn red and jumps out the window down a flight of stairs. The ref could be Crawford.

Soooo, no Gasol no Bynam, and everyone's favrite MVP candidate is back to scoring 50+ in a loss against the drags of the NBA.

Good, this love-thread for Lakers and Kobe was getting on my nerves. All that is left now is for VF21 to move it to Lounge with the rest of +1 threads. ;)

The two wins the Lakers had against Utah and Dallas were fairly impressive considering the recent loss of Gasol, but I'm beginning to think those were more flukish than the recent losses. Sometimes the team pulls together, finds extra motivation and in addition other teams take you less seriously when you've suffered some injuries.

Now the Lakers have come down to earth a bit, and what you'd expect is happening. Any team with a halfway decent inside presence is really exposing the Lakers lack of size and also over-reliance on the 3 pointer.

They are also really bit with injuries (add Fisher now to the list). Laker fans at work are getting testy, but are still optimistic, still counting on Bynum and Gasol being back soon. I'll be very surprised if all their pieces not only make it back close to 100% but the team can re-integrate them and get their swagger and flow back to where it was by playoff time.

They've got games against a few more underachiever teams coming up, it'll be interesting to see how they approach it... looks like they could end up the #6 seed after the weekend if they don't right the ship! Amazing.. of course that's not that far away from the #1 seed -- or out of the playoffs completely either :)

Anyone else curious about the mythical pinky injury the brave little soldier is still battling? I thought it was something that could only be cured through surgery and yet - mystery of mysteries - there's be no mention of it.

Was it a miracle? A laying on of hands?

Hmmmm????

The injury is there all right, it just wasn't as deadly as the media portrayed it. Maybe it was forgotten, but it was never mentioned that Bird sustained the same injury on the same hand on the same finger in the same way (dislocation while swiping for the ball). Bird played for years w/ a tape job. What Kobe's doing is not unprecedented.

Same team that went 500 last season and lost to Char/Memp. The wins against the good teams are no more flukish than the losses. They are wildly erratic w/ this lineup, been this way for 3+ yrs.

"For the first time since the 3-point line was instituted before the 1979-80 season, both [LAL & WASH] shot better than 50 percent from 3-point range and under 50 percent from the floor."

So there you go.

I am amazed by your knowledge of lakers basketball and nba in general and I am serious about it

Haha. Okay. Unless you ARE serious, in which case, daps.

Bird caught that injury and the flu during the 83 Bos/Milw series. Boston got swept.

since I want GS in the playoffs and I hate Dallas I want them to lose every game except this one tonight lol :)

Odom had an Elden Campblish night leaving us saying, "Deeeeem..." and "Why don't you do this more often, you butthead?"

I know the Mavs are softies in the paint, but are they really so bad that 1-11 vs .500 teams is legit? That's about as fluky to me as 22 straight by HOU. Since you hate Dallas, you must rejoice at how painful this has gotta be for the Mavs fans to bear. They play well all game and just spill their guts at critical moments night after night. They're the NBA's version of the film "Groundhog Day". Not only that, but they've mortgaged their future. Ouch.

Mav fans (all distinct posts):
-------------
"Mavericks, i hate you for keeping me stressed out so much this season, i can feel my pulse throbbing in my neck. I really dont know how many more of these i can take before i pick up the closes object and throw it as hard as i can at the tv, or one of my roommates if they happen to make a comment after the choke."

"I hate kobe "

"im starting to think the only reason this team did what they did to GS is they were on a 4 games in 5 days schedule, GS played terrible, and a little bit of luck on the mavs side of things. this team does this TOO often, literally every single big game they blow it at the end, if they get into the playoffs, i just dont see how i can think they will do anything, and just after i thought the last game was a turning point, here we go again, back to the old maverick formula.. play hard first half, get a big lead, blow it last minute. good god pathetic, im not going to be able to sleep, i can just feel my blood pressure rising...so freaking stupid"

"I mean you keep thinking, it can't get any worse, it can ONLY get better, so you try to think positive about it, but then literally time and time again, any game that would REALLY mean something, that comes down to the last few minutes, the mavs blow the game because of silly stupid crap."

"There it goes, **** pathetic. Why the **** is Damp out 35 feet from the basket doubling down on Kobe. Only Avery would have told him to do so, **** stupid *** **** you are Avery. I want your *** fired!"

I like it when other teams make huge, salary cap killing mistakes. Dallas is no exception. :) This will set them back for years.

My concern for the Lakers is though they have Odom and Gasol, both of their bigs are skinny guys and Lakers are playing a jump shooting game. This leads me to think:

1. The Lakers "big guys" are not big enough to compete with the bigger teams in the playoffs.
2. Jump shooting teams do not generally do well in the playoffs (if you are having an off shooting night, game over, right? This was the problem the Kings ran into a couple times in the post-season. Also, see "Dallas Mavericks")

I predict the Lakers will possibly win a playoff round or two, but will lose to a team with stronger big men in the playoffs.

Bigger teams in the playoffs? Who do you mean by that?

San Antonio - Tim Duncan, Oberto, Ginobili

Phoenix - Shaq, Amare, Diaw/Hill

Jazz - Boozer, Okur, Kirilenko

NO - Chandler, Peja, West

How are the lakers not big enough?

the only dominating power big man is Tim Duncan and even Duncan is more of a finess guy.

Shaq no longer backs down the opposition as much or as effective as in his laker days, its about position with shaq now. Amare is a guard stuck in a big mans body. He has no back to the basket power moves that I have seen. He relies on speed and athleticism. Look at how the Mavs played him at the end of Sundays fourth quarter.

The Jazz and NO have solid big men in Boozer, West and Chandler but they are not the kind of players that will dominate the lakers in a seven game series (ala Malone in 1997 and 1998)

Secondly, The Lakers are a jump shooting team when they are missing Bynum and Gasol. They just play horrible without them. (even then they destroyed Utah in SLC) I will say that they fall in love with the three when they are down sometimes.

I dont know how far the lakers will go, but I dont think LA going up against bigger teams will be a problem or that they will turn into the Warriors. They will be the biggest team and they have post up players and a guy that takes it to the rack in Kobe.
