does anyone think that kobe could be swtching to number #24, because he wants to say/show that hes one up on mj or one better than mj. u know mj was 23 and now kobe wants 24?
am i looking in to it too much?

You're reading too much into it.

And Kobe will never one up MJ until he wins as many titles. I do have to say, Kobe does have a nice little head start though... MJ only started winning later in his career.

We've discussed this at length previously. Apparently he wants to use his high school number, which wasn't available at the time, from what we've been able to gather. It has nothing to do with MJ and everything to do with selling more jerseys.

Kobe's jersey sales were down last year. What better way to revive them than to pick a new number?

The great Fred Roberts wore 24 in 1996, but I think he was already cut in the Great Shaq Cap Dump by the time Kobe was traded for. It was available, but Kobe chose to wear 8 to reflect the sum of his 3-digit number at the ABCD pre-draft camp (so he said).

My take on why he's really wearing 24 now:

Adidas violated the spirit of its former contract w/ Kobe by re-releasing his first shoe and calling it "Crazy 8". I don't know whether Kobe knew of this before he turned in his request to change his # (which he had to do last year). If he did, it's very plausible that such a thing would irk him.

Most likely is that he wanted to prove his true jersey sale figures. His 8 jersey had been the same for 7 years and LA hardly ever changes the style of its uniforms and will never change its colors or logo. Because of this, how many 8 jerseys can the average fanboy buy? By changing his number, we will have a clearer picture of how he compares with his contemporaries in jersey sales.

And I suspect he just might be a tad disappointed. But that's just a guess.

I don't have jersey figures on me, but I wager he's compared favorably w/ Bron and Wade considering he's had the same exact jersey for 7 years (4 of which before they were drafed)...not to mention Eaglegate.

Thats a good point, hes been around for a while and has been on the same team for his whole career so there isnt any point in buying another Kobe jersey if you already have one, now there is, i think that has some to due with it.

He was #4 last year, up a spot from the year before. Considering he's starting his 11th season on the same team...not too shabby.

4 is three lower than 1, at least when you're talking about sales rankings, etc.
